As those of us who are dog lovers know, taking care of a new puppy is a lot of responsibility. When Christy's aunt gives her one of her dachshund's babies, she is thrilled because it's the very one she's had her eye on. It's love at first sight, of course, and Christy and Lucky enjoy going on walks and getting used to new routines. When Lucky disappears while in the back yard, Christy finds her in a most unlikely place, but that disappearance foreshadows a even more frightening one. When Christy's younger sister Anna trips and hurts herself while the family is walking in a woodsy area a good distance from home, Lucky's leash and collar become loose, and the puppy ends up lost in the woods. By the time the family realizes she's missing, she is nowhere to be found. Lucky lives up to his name, though, as a kind-hearted jogger finds her. Late elementary and early intermediate readers will enjoy the story, partly because of its animal focus and happy ending and partly because of how seriously Christy takes her responsibilities as Lucky's human companion and caregiver.
