Dreaming In Print: A Decade Of Visionaire

Rate this book
From the acclaimed, best-selling Fashion issue packaged in a Louis Vuitton clutch, to the battery operated Light issue and the Bible issue's good book floating in a Philippe Starck case, the story of Visionaire is about pushing the boundaries of print and transforming fantasy into reality. Founded in 1991 as a journal of inspiration, a collection of artwork and images hand-assembled by a group of friends in a one-room apartment in New York City, Visionaire has since grown into one of the most highly sought-after fashion-and-art publications in the world. Dreaming in Print takes an intimate look at the publication's history and examines the making of each ground-breaking issue.

We set out to create an album of inspiration, a limited-edition art and fashion publication no one had ever done before. SPRING [April 1991] was our first issue. ... Most of the contributors were friends, who lent their time, their work, and their unlimited support. No two pages were printed on the same paper stock because we were using all the printer's remnants. ... We couldn't afford the luxury of binding, so the issue is unbound, the loose pages forming a sort of folio of tear sheets of favorite images.

— James Kaliardos

Ten years ago, three young ... people had a dream and a vision: They wanted to create a new kind of magazine, like no other magazine existing. No "seasons"—only "visions"—and so they invented VISIONAIRE and spent the next ten years (and continue to do so) dreaming in print...
