As usual with Early Reviewer books, I didn't know what to expect from 'Evil Genius' and, as usual, I found myself reading something that I probably wouldn't have picked out for myself but that I'm mostly glad I have tried.

The narrative from the start is smart and witty and the characters largely likeable. Searching for relief from her hectic family life, she is working in the virtual world as a 'virtual assistant' and hiding out in a basement apartment. Right from the moment her solitude is interrupted by the arrival of her younger half sister Elizabeth Georgiana ('EG') and half brother Nick, she slips back into her maternal role and has to fight to protect her family. The relationships between the siblings were dynamic and soon became my favourite thing about the book.

On the whole, this story is centred around Ana: her search for a solid home and family life; her efforts to overcome her aversion to society; her unusual relationship with the disembodied voice of "the spider" in the attic and her crime-solving exploits. As a means of telling the story, it works well and the reader really does get inside her head, so to speak. By the end, though, I wasn't sure that was where I wanted to be! Ana is clearly damaged by her relationship with her mother and forms a frankly unhealthy relationship with a man who she has never met in person but is quite happy to share a house with (!). The odd sexual references seemed unsettlingly out of place and even I, with very limited knowledge of the subject, felt myself analysing her like an abstract psychology study! I understand that the author was probably going for vulnerable/troubled but it became a bit muddled. Ana went from dungaree-wearing wallflower to a tottering stiletto-booted bombshell and back again just a few too many times for me.

So what of the 'mystery'? Despite some great characters, at times I felt that the plot wasn't as coherent as I like in a mystery. I like not quite knowing what is coming up and being thrown off course by an unexpected twist. I less enjoy feeling confused and as though I've missed a step that was apparently obvious to the narrator. There were a lot of elements to the gradually merging mysteries and a lot of minor characters. Towards the end, I actually found that I was more interested in what was happening to the main characters and less bothered about the conclusion of the mystery element...even after I had just finished the novel, I couldn't have explained the plot to someone even if I had wanted to.

Overall: This isn't a book to be taken too seriously - it's as feisty as its female lead and the narrative is smart and entertaining. I would recommend it to older YA readers (although that seems contradictory!). The characters and tone felt a little too young for me to want to recommend it to more 'serious' fans of the mystery genre and a little too much political intrigue for me to think a teen would enjoy it.

If nothing else, there's a lot going on and a range of characters to keep you entertained - just make sure you keep your wits about you so you don't get lost in the tangle!

Anastasia Devlin is a virtual assistant, an invisible researcher and finder-of-all-things known to her clients as a handle and a PO Box. She’s also the daughter of a gorgeous, dysfunctional woman of many marriages and affairs. Her mother provided her with numerous half-siblings (all the children of powerful and/or wealthy men) and a checkered past of living in palaces and mud huts around the world.

At twenty-six Ana bolted, and has been hidden from her family for four years. She’s not a hermit, but she’s an introvert who scorns her mother’s way of dealing with the world, much less men. Right now, living in a basement flat in Atlanta, GA and building a career and a bank account through her laptop works just fine for her.

Then one morning she opens her door to find her nine year old sister Elizabeth Georgiana, I.E. EG for Evil Genius (EG earned her name at five years while unmasking an addicted gambler – her mother’s current boyfriend – just before he made off with the money from Mom’s last divorce settlement.) “I brought my own bed,” EG announces as she drags in a suitcase as big as she is. “Nick will be here shortly.” That’s eldest younger brother, side scion of an English lord, a talented gambler who is depressed and has his own reasons for seeking Ana out.

Who died? How did she get on a plane? And why did she track down the only family member who can be relied on in a crisis? Turns out EG’s worshiped but never seen VIP father has been accused of murder, and EG thinks Ana can prove it’s not true.

And we’re off to the races! This novel is listed as a mystery, but Patricia Rice clearly has read her share of Jennifer Crusie and Janet Evanovich, because this is in many ways a caper novel. With a family like Ana’s, there are more adventures to be told. In a fit of wishing for family and a home, Ana had just located where their grandfather lives – Washington DC. So it’s time to visit grandfather.

But grandfather died, the lawyer for his estate has disappeared, and the new owner of mansion and butler is a disembodied voice living in the attic who has surveillance cameras set up everywhere – and the plot just gets more tangled and crazy. There’s gentle humor, real threats, a few good-looking men, a possible “spook” living on the top floor – no, that’s all you get. Trust me, this is just the beginning, I haven’t spoiled a thing, and it all works .

Multiple mysteries are presented, and Ana the chameleon has to solve all of them before someone offs those annoying details – Ana and her siblings. Ana will be forced to “bloom” as she channels her inner woman, anger issues and all, into building a safe base for her family. Several romantic possibilities show up, but are not realized in this fast-moving book. There is one kiss that in context will prove quite satisfying to the patient reader! Rice never drops a ball. I tripped once or twice, and caught a couple of typos, but the racing plot never slowed down.

At the end, you’ll find yourself wondering who exactly is the real evil genius? And you’ll be glad you checked out this fun e-book.

Already the first few lines of Patricia Rice's murder mystery promised a fun and quirky read. Narrated mostly by the main character Ana, sometimes interwoven with the POV of title-lending protagonist EG, who is Ana's little sister, the book mostly lives of the great, unique cast, and much less of the plot itself.
Admittedly the storyline felt rather meh to me. It all starts with Ana trying to get the mysterious new owner out of her deceased grandfather's mansion while at the same time trying to solve a crime involving textbooks (no kidding) and of course there is a connection to that mystery man. Truth be told, the smart and witty narrative certainly made up for the average plot and especially Ana was a wonderfully devised character which I could totally relate to.
I can well imagine a sequel, especially with Ana's family, which is full with one of a kind personalities, there's plenty of potential, though I hope the plot will be a bit more engaging than this one.
In short: For everyone who likes quirky mysteries!

I love Patricia Rice's books and had read every book of hers I could get my hands on. Then along comes this new series from her 5 years ago that I completely fell in love with. The style was new and fun, with hints of old TV shows (Scarecrow and Mrs King, Remington Steele, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer) - and so many possibilities for the series to go in.

I had to wait over 4 years for books 2 and 3 to come out, but they were well worth the wait. After reading book 3 I decided I wanted to revisit the first book and see what I had originally loved about the series. It was like reminiscing with an old friend. All the original elements I loved were still there, but they felt even more fleshed out because I knew what was coming next.

So if you are new to the series or just finished one of the later books, please give this first book a try - it is well worth the read!

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I want to change my scoring by 0.50 or more of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)

3.5*

First time read the author's work?: No

Will you be reading more?: Yes

Would you recommend?: Yes

------------
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author)
4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author).
3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series)
or
3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)

All of the above scores means I would recommend them!
-
2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.)
1* = Disliked

Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)

An exotic and far-spread group of children raised by an atypical but not uncaring, beautiful mother, three of them are introduced in this book. Two converge on their oldest sister from different parts of the world and she convinces them to go with her to Washington, D.C. to find their grandfather, whom they do not know about and whom she herself has not seen in twenty years. The fun, anxiety, pressure, and learning about family starts there. It is so fast-paced that your head begins to whirl as you try to piece together the elements of the mystery that grows deeper with each page. And you can't wait for the next book in the series to meet more of this oddly enticing family. Wonderful suspense and adventure.

I don't know how to describe this book. The author is a romance writer. The novel has a young woman who does virtual research. She protects her family while trying to move them into the Washington DC house they should have inherited from their grandfather. Different siblings had different fathers from their socialite mother the protagonist also has issues with.

There are murder and conspiracies that they resolve. I will get the sequel.

I deliberately read this book slowly because I didn't want it to end. I absolutely love Patricia Rice's voice, particularly in her books about magical families, and this series about a genius family is very similar. I thought the plot was smart and the characters were engaging and entertaining, but above all, it's the voice that draws me in and made me buy the next book in this series.

The synopsis of this book was intriguing and having read historical books by Ms. Rice I thought I would try this series. By the second chapter I was totally engrossed with a main character who was interesting and completely different from any other I have read. For romantic suspense fans who like a novel that is unique with an anticipation of more to come please try this book.

I was honestly surprised by the publication date, this story reads like it's way older. It's a stylistic thing mostly, and some vocab etc. I'm not sure I'll continue with the series. There are moments that might redeem it for other people, I liked the interactions between Ana and undoubtedly-endgame-Graham for example, but... the incongruities kept jolting me out of the story.

I am going to start by saying that the front cover of the book says it all. ‘Millions, Mayhem, and Murder’ these three M’s unfold throughout the book. This fast paced mystery that will keep you intrigued by the twists and turns, wondering who did it, what was going to happen next totally encasing the genre of a mystery, as I truly could not tell what was going to happen.

The "Evil Genius” wrote in Ana's perspective, Ana a virtual assistant who is able to work out any cyber problem possible. However when it comes to her family landing on her doorstep unannounced her invisible and introvert ways have been jeopardised. No longer being able to live in her seldom-quiet life again, resulting in a move to Grandfathers house.

Ana helps her sister EG only 9; find her missing father, accused of murder. With the help of Nick (the brother), all three siblings work together as one (most of the time), even though they have not seen each other for years. Ana takes on the caregiver role, protecting her family; all agreeing that they have a dysfunctional family and a drama queen of a mother. Nevertheless, they are thankful for the many different talents they have as a result, which come in handy along the journey. Nick has mathematical talents, EG is the Evil Genius and Ana specialised in fighting dirty, and kicking butt.

Together they need to find EG’s father, solve the murders, workout who sold there late grandfathers estate to the man who lives on the third floor (Graham) and work out what happened to the stolen inheritance.

Patricia writes strong characters that I found fascinating, I felt as though I was Ana, feeling things through her thoughts on the page and the viewpoints of EG were terrific, as it gave you input into the things unknown to Ana. Patricia was flowing with her words and she described the scenes, characters, clothing so well I could envision what the characters were saying, doing and moving. And wow how does Patricia know so much about Boxing and fighting, it was elaborated in great detail making me think she does is in her spare time.

What is Evil Genius? Patricia Rice is who, she has written a mystery that is also suitable for Young Adult Readers with a little hint of romantic tension. It is a fast-paced mystery, which has you guessing. Driving you to keep going, as you need to know what is going to happen next. It left me wanting more. So check out Patricia Rice’s Book at www.bookviewcafe.com its well worth the read.

I received this book in return for an honest review.

I loved the main characters in this book. Ana, who believes she is a doormat but is anything but; EG, who is a genius but just wants her daddy; Nick, who can win any game of odds and pick couture evening wear like a stylist; Graham, the spider in the attic; Sean, the oh-so-hot Irish rogue.

There is lots of intrigue and danger in DC when Ana and her half-siblings show up. EG wants Ana to help her father, but they arrive to find their grandfather dead, their inheritance stolen and a stranger living in his house. While trying to get back their inheritance, help EG help her senator father out of a murder charge and make a stable home for her siblings Ana manages to stir up a hornets' nest of political skulduggery, money laundering, and murder.

This is listed as a romantic mystery but there is really no romance. Ana has some sexual interest in Sean and Graham, but she only complains about it and doesn't act on it. The only real problem I had with this book was her strange sexual/romantic reaction to being manipulated and spied on by a man she hasn't even seen. Who would enjoy living where their every word and act was commented on by a man hiding in their home? Seriously, the guy even watches her bedroom and comments on her nightwear.

This is a seriously interesting family and they, more than the mystery make this book a great read.

I love political intrigue . . . sort of. House of Cards style political intrigue leaves me cold and disgusted. I'm much more the conspiracy-type lover. So, when I read Evil Genius, I was cautious.

As it turns out, I very much so enjoyed myself. The intrigue is real, but it isn't rife with the really disgusting elements. I was delighted to know I had a second novel in the series to read. I enjoyed how, though Ana was the narrator, this story belonged to EG (the Evil Genius of the title). The story was about HER father and HER future and HER needs. It made for an interesting dynamic to hear the story from another's perspective.

I also appreciate the home front troubles in the novel. Ana has inherited the position of mother with all the responsibility and not too many of the benefits. This is another reason why I appreciated the novel coming, in the main, from her perspective. Also, the home front troubles weren't solved in this book. This sets up a good rational for a series without it seeming like a mystery a week sort of set-up. The fate of Maximillian home and Graham (and the surly butler, Mallard) give us some continuity for the next novel.

I do love the family dynamic Rice created. It's silly and funny, but also very real. These are children who were raised by themselves and have a difficult relationship with their absentee mother (and most have little to no relationship with their various fathers). All of them react in different ways to the unconventional family they are a part of. I like that there are some family traits that cannot be escaped, but that each of the siblings (and I understand there are more to be met) is an individual.

The only note I have is that the switch between Ana's first person narration and the third person narration surrounding EG is a *little* difficult to get used to. I understand why it was done, but I wish there had been a smoother way to deal with it (maybe by making both narrations first-person or third-person, but I don't know).

A (excellent characters, fun political intrigue; strange narrative shifts)

I won this book from Library Thing's Early Reviewers giveaway.

I am in love with this book!! This is one of those books that you don't want to put down and you don't want it to end. The ending of this book was perfect - just enough closure to wrap up the "mystery" but still leaving enough unexplained or unevolved to hope for a sequel (or more).

This is the story of a woman, Anastasia, in her late 20's who comes from a very large family of siblings, most with different fathers. She has been estranged from their mother for 10 years for various reasons. Her mother is the daughter of a very rich man in Washington D.C. and had been estranged from her own father for reasons not stated in the book. The book opens with Ana's youngest half-sister, EG (9 years old), showing up on her doorstep in Atlanta along with their half-brother Nick (early 20s and gay). Apparently, EG's father Tex, a well known congressman, has been accused of murder. EG has come to Ana to ask for her help in clearing Tex. What follows is a very fast-paced, well written, thought evoking story about politics, murder and mysterious people. I prefer not to delve into the whole plot of the book, as I do not want to give anything away to those who do not want to hear everything in a review.

This was a wonderful book, appropriate for everyone. I would highly recommend reading it - I believe anybody who likes mystery books would very much enjoy this one!

Ana Devlin grew up in the fast paced world of her mother's design. She was responsible for the care of her younger siblings, but it depleted her making her feel like a constant "doormat." In her self-imposed exile she was able to gain a sense of normalcy (at least normal for her) working as a virtual assistant gave her a means to take care of herself, while staying off the grid from her family. All good things must come to an end...her 9-year old little sister EG shows up, only to be followed shortly after by her brother Nick.

The three whisk off to Washington D.C. to find out who's framing EG's dad for murder. The catch is EG's father happens to be a US Senator, a married US Senator whose wife has no idea she exists. Everything gets exciting and complicated from there. They discover their Grandfather had died two months prior, the proceeds from the estate have been stolen, and their Grandfather's home has been bought and is now occupied by a mysterious man who does not show his face.

The siblings are resourceful to say the least, their Mother is more than a handful, and they are knee deep in a complicated political mess. The makings of a great story!

Each character is interesting and intelligent, providing their own unique abilities which makes the story fascinating. I really enjoyed reading this book. I get the feeling their may be a series in the works here and I certainly hope I'm right!

I have to admit that I was a little hesitant about this book based on the cover art, but as they say, you can’t judge a book by its cover. Once I started this book I couldn’t put it down. It has everything that I like in a good escapism story; mystery, light humor, sharp wits, plot twists, and strong characters. The story opens with Anastasia Devlin living alone and working as a Virtual Assistant in a seedy part of Atlanta. She thinks she has escaped the craziness of her dysfunctional family (her mother is a globe trotting diplomat, spy or journalist who has had many liaisons with powerful men and numerous children all of whom have some special talent). However, with the arrival of her 10-year-old sister, Elizabeth Georgina (aka EG or Evil Genius), closely followed by her brother, Ana is pulled back into the family fray. Suffice it to say this fast paced story of a family pulling together to save each other and their ancestral home from a mysterious man living on the third floor of their house, evil textbook publishers, money launders and various shady DC politicians will keep you engaged to the end, and hoping for the next installment where we get to meet more of the siblings.

The Particulars: Evil Genius by Patricia Rice, e-book, mystery.
The Review:

The Blurb:
Anastasia Devlin has the instincts of a chameleon, but what she really wants is to provide her siblings with the security of the home she’s been denied. Her grandfather dies and his mansion is usurped by a stranger. If murder hasn’t already been committed, she might perpetrate one herself—starting with the annoying spy in the attic. The threads of three mysteries twine together, and someone wants to cut the cord before Ana finds the answers.

My impressions:
I discovered that Patricia Rice had released a new e-book purely by coincidence. The blurb sounded interesting, so I bought it. Patricia Rice is best known for her romance novels, filled with charming characters. This one isn’t a romance, it is a novel.
It is about family, and family secrets. The characters fascinated me, with their depth, secrets and humor. I especially liked that every character was there because they moved the plot forward.
As I read this book, the similarity to Jennifer Crusie struck me several times. Is it better than a Jennifer Crusie novel? Read it and decide for yourself. All I hope , is that Patricia Rice writes some more books about Ana and her family. 10 or so should be enough….

Oh, this was loads and loads of fun. Many of the ER books I've won lately have been real chores to read, suffering a lot from blurb mis-marketing and new-author-itis, but I started Evil Genius with the reaction of a gleeful Hee! and the feeling carried the whole way through the end. I thought the pacing stellar, the characters fascinating, and the mystery/drama-focus (rather than romance) spot on. Highly recommended, particularly for fans of Jennifer Crusie or Rosamund Pilcher.

If I could have changed anything, it would have been to include page appearances of Ana's other siblings — that would have been all kinds of awesome — but I'd be fully satisfied in later Ana books if the sibling cast rotated. (Let there be later Ana books. Hint, hint.)

This finished e-copy was provided to me by the publisher, given through the LibraryThing Early Reviewers Program.

Such fun! Patricia Rice does a wacky shift into mystery with this one. Made me think (just a little) of the Spellman Files.

Ana is the oldest of a group of unique sibs. When they simultaneously learn they have inherited a home from their grandfather and that it has been sold out from under them, Ana, Nick and EG get started.

Patricia Rice is such fun! Sometimes contemporary, sometimes historical, and always enjoyable! Evil Genius is a great, light-suspense read, filled with memorable characters and fun moments.

I received this title free for signing up to an authors email list, and oh, boy - FANTASTIC DEAL! I enjoy all of the books I have read by Patricia Rice, and she has vastly different series. This is the first in a series about a very eccentric family tied to some questionable activity in the government. There is a lot of series set up and character development that might not appeal to all readers, but I LOVE well developed series. I will definitely look for the next book. Thank you for a great read!

This is a strange book and I generally like strange books. Our protagonist is a Virtual Assistant, daughter of self described princess and half sibling to a collection of eccentric siblings.

The arrival of a 9 year old sister and a much older brother sends them off to DC to locate their grandfather. Who, it seems is deceased.

My problem with the book was it didn't really fit any genre and was just bizarre. Didn't hold my interest.

This was a good read with a very twisted and elaborate plot, at least for me. Still can't believe in 200 and something pages I'm no closer to knowing who the love interest is, and is the mystery guy and Graham the same person? I was kind of thrown off by ana's description of herself because from her point of view she comes off as much of nothing, but when viewed from other points of view it would seem she's a looker even with the denim jumpers and Princess Leia braids she likes wearing.

Evil Genius by Patricia Rice was difficult to finish. Wasn't too impressed with the premise of the story and the ending was left open for a sequel. The main character Ana is trying to solve the mystery of her grandfather's death while looking after all of her siblings. I felt both the mystery and romantic subplots were lacking. Will pass on the sequel.

Patricia Rice's "Evil Genius", is one of those novels you don't want to end. Her writing is smart and funny and well-crafted. Her characters are sassy and captivating. The fast-paced, mind-boggling intrigue is perfectly balanced with tantalizing sexual tension. What more could you want. More, please. Much, much more!

Great mystery

No fluff, no swearing and no steamy, smutty romance.
True mystery from first page to last in impeccable prose. Great drama and intrigue without any superfluous crap. Patricia Rice has a writing style that makes the most of each word without being overblown. I felt as if I was part of it all instead of just reading a book.

Evil Genius by Patricia Rice is a fantastic read. The humor in this book is outstanding! I loved the characters too. Patricia Rice has a new fan after reading just two of her books. Evil Genius is a suspenseful, well written story complete with action and a mystery man. I look forward to reading more from Patricia Rice in the future. Evil Genius is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
