This book had me captured and on the edge of my seat the whole time. I loved the book and I believe a lot of kids would love it to. Although it was a longer book, I believe there is a enough action to hold students attention when I read it aloud.
My ONLY concern is that this is a super inspiring book/ story, and students may want to take up mushing, but it doesn't highlight just how much work Pam actually put into training and readying the pups for pulling sleds!
This was such an engaging story. It draws you in and makes you feel things. You root for the team. You worry when they worry. You are excited when they are excited. It was educational and interesting, and tells a magnificent story.
Big-Enough Anna: The Little Sled Dog Who Braved the Artic by Pam Flowers is a true story of a small sled dog (the smallest in her litter that overcame the odds and led her sled team on a 2,5000 mile journey across the artic with her sled driver (Pam Flowers) who would become the first woman to make the expedition across the artic. I highly recommend reading this book and sharing it with your kids, the author tells the story in a way that draws you into the characters as they face their different obstacles, and the illustrations are warm and inviting.
This book is about the first women to sled across the Arctic alone. It is about how the smallest dog in the group helped them. It is non-fiction, has a story that empowers women while showing how size does not always matter. I really enjoyed learning about this story. I can use this book in the classroom for a unit about pioneers, people who did things first.
Anna may be small in stature, but she is brave and loves to run. She has the heart of a sled dog! In this story, based on actual events, Anna becomes a lead dog in a 2500 mile expedition across the Arctic. Great story to illustrate hard work and desire over physical ability.
Pam Flowers will be visiting my school in March to discuss this book and her experience as the first woman to traverse the North American Artic alone. Looking forward to her visit!
