The authors of this book have offered an empathetic and highly useful guide to working with individuals who suffer from bipolar / manic depression. They emphasize understanding what each individual patient needs and grant you with a clear understanding of the significant hopelessness and emotions that accompany this disorder.
For a change though, rather than focusing just on the psychopharmacological treatment options that are out there, they get down into the other distinguishing factors. The authors help to explain how drug and alcohol abuse often accompany this disroder, and the psychosocial and identity issues that will always complicate your treatment plans. They also address important issues such as self-disclosure and bipolar disorder.
All in all, I found this a useful and compassionate - but it was a little dry. I will however agree with others when they say that this is a long overdue guide for therapists working with individuals struggling with this disorder.
