This book makes me wonder how long someone can remain hidden. The killer said, himself, that he thought he would get away for a few weeks or a few months, but, 18 years! This makes me appreciate or at least be grateful for some of the things I've been through and also, very thankful for technological advances.

Well written, but a bit too long. Many details which must have been "novelized"; A good read overall.

Chilling & heartbreaking account of the List family murders by their loved one, John Emil List. His sheltered, strict upbringing by an over-protective mother, religious background & moral upbringing, all contributed to his personality & the man he’d become. His was obsessed with order, rules, and social appearances. The state of his wife’s health, his growing financial worries, the culture of the early 70s & its effect on his children were factors in his decision to kill his entire family, disappear, & start a new life with a new identity. He almost got away with it.

This is one of the most genuinely creepy books I have ever read. The story of John List - how he planned, methodically executed his entire family then fled, assumed a new identity and escaped capture for more than 18 years is almost unbelieveable. He was captured shortly after an episode of "America's Most Wanted" aired. They had taken a photograph of List from the early 70's, aged it and made a bust which was almost immediately recognized by his neighbour who then called police. I cannot imagine what it would have been like living in that house. The author paints a very disturbing picture.
