Private detective Harry McGlade is on the prowl, looking for a one-night stand. Or, in McGlade's case, a five-minute stand.
When he finds a sexy lady at his local bar, he thinks he has a chance with her.
But she wasn't alone. There was a guy with her. A guy with a gun whom she was desperately trying to get away from.
When the local mafia becomes involved with McGlade's tryst, things start going bad.
Then they go really bad, when a baby comes into the picture. And the only one McGlade can turn to for help is his old partner, Lt. Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels. <
Joe Konrath has written over twenty novels in the Lt. Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels thriller series. They do not have to be read chronologically to be enjoyed, but the order is: Whiskey Sour, Bloody Mary, Rusty Nail, Dirty Martini, Shot of Tequila, Fuzzy Navel, Cherry Bomb, Dead On My Feet, Serial Killers Uncut (with Blake Crouch), Shaken, Stirred (with Blake Crouch), Dying Breath, Everybody Dies, Rum Runner, Last Call, White Russian, Shot Girl, Chaser, Old Fashioned, Bite Force, and Witch Brew. More coming soon.
Wow, that's a lot of Jack.
If you like your thrillers on the dark side, check out the Konrath Dark Thriller Collective, which includes the books The List, Origin, Afraid, Trapped, Endurance, Haunted House, Webcam, Disturb, What Happened To Lori, The Nine, Second Coming, and Close Your Eyes.
Joe also wrote the Stop A Murder mystery puzzle series, where you become the sleuth and solve brain teasers to try and catch a killer.
He also wrote the sci-fi trilogy, Timecaster, Timecaster Supersymmetry, and Timecaster Steampunk. Even if you don't think you like sci-fi, give them a try. They feature Joe's well-known characters from his other series, and are insane.
With Ann Voss Peterson he wrote the Codename: Chandler thrillers, including Flee, Spree, Three, Hit, Exposed, Naughty, Fix (with F. Paul Wilson), Rescue, and Free.
And, finally, he writes erotica under the pen name Melinda DuChamp, also with Ann Voss Peterson. Those books are probably too spicy for you, so only the brave and bold should seek them out.
Joe writes a lot. You should probably read everything.
What can you say about Harry McGlade? He has no filter...painfully honest...sexist pig...the false confidence of a Howard Wolowitz, but not the IQ...insensitive...hilarious... Here's the thing, you've either known someone like this or you will meet them some day. It is difficult to say which is better - friend or enemy.
I'll try to explain. This little story of my life is 100% true... After school, I got this (horrible) advice to do something to get me out of my shell. I went on a tour through my country, doing door-to-door sales to pay my way. We were a group of eight, including the tour leader. Those who thought it would do the world of good to my confidence - Fuck you! You can put a bow tie on a dog turd but it will still smell like shit. I was never going to be comfortable around strangers, and it took me a very long time to come to peace with that bit of knowledge. Anyway, I'm going off point again - you really should stop me when I do that. So, on one very bad selling day, the person in charge decided to punish us by forcing us to go door-to-door way past a decent hour at night. I was paired up with my friend and was very comfortable letting him do most of the talking. Eventually we were on a street where there were only about two houses whose lights were still on. Quick fact: 'Lights on' does not mean 'people not sleeping'
Right, we knocked waiting a little and heard someone moving inside. The door opens and this big, overweight guy is standing there in only boxers, with hair disheveled and eyes red, which were all clues that we had just woken him up. Couldn't do anything about it but push on, so my friend identified himself and told the guy we were selling (unnamed). His eyes went from confused to pissed off in a millisecond - which was kind of understandable. "Get the fuck off my property!" he yelled at us. I tried to obey by turning around when my (up until then) friend replied: "You should love thy neighbor. Don't you read your bible?" Okay, I'll be honest and admit that a freezer opened in my gut, and I was fairly certain we were not going to get off that property undamaged. The only thing that saved us (I think) was that the guy was just as shocked as I was. Miraculously (don't know if it was the bible reference or not), we managed to leave without pain.
So, yeah, having one of those people for a friend, who will say the very first thing that comes to their mind - whether they are right or wrong - can be a danger to your health.
I can't think of a better way to describe Harry. So, yes, it will not be politically correct, but if you look at it as a fictional character, you are allowed to laugh.
A funny, very short mystery book. This book is the first of this series I have read and I found it very fun but a little crass. Well written with a Private Eye and a Mobster. James Cagney comes to mind.
It's always a happy day when J A Konrath releases a new book with any or all of the characters from his 'Jack Daniels' series....ESPECIALLY Harry McGlade. True to form, Harry was...well...Harry. Disgusting, rude, chauvinistic, gross...and funny as hell! And yes, a very preggo Jack Daniels makes an appearance as well. This is a novella that took a fraction of time to complete. Loved starting off my morning with a lil McGlade in my cup. ;)
This book was FANTASTIC. Loved seeing Jack pregnant "Hell hath no fury like a preggo denied Zingers." Honestly I was a bit hesitant to read the Harry stories thinking that his personality would just be too much as the main character, but this book was so enjoyable I'm off to get all his other ones.
A great short read. If you enjoy Konrath's Jack Daniels series and the wise-ass Harry McClade character, you will enjoy this book. McGlade's crude humor makes this a fun, quick read. It is not an action packed thriller like Konrath's other books, but I enjoyed reading it.
I bought this at Smashwords.com when it was called "Jailbait". I loved it, McGlade is a character with no boundaries and it is a blast to see him deal with pregnancy.
I wondered how McGlade Jr. came about! (Not literally.) There have been plenty of references to this story, but I've never actually gotten to read it. It all makes sense! I loved it.
We’ve so far read and mostly enjoyed six of Konrath’s police Lt. (Ms.) Jack Daniels novels, which are generally some combination of comical banter and dangerous criminals. We picked up “Jailbait” on a whim, featuring Harry Glade, a self-appointed half-brother to Daniels, whose cameo momentary appearance hardly qualifies as a mention. Harry goes into a bar looking for a whore and finds one; thereafter a succession of events combine to both amuse and horrify. There’s a silly attempt to blackmail the thugs messing with the woman, and then her pregnancy puts a new spin on everything.
While some found this short novella entertaining, we were not at all pleased with most of the “plot,” not to mention the crude overt sex talk. In general, we wished we hadn’t read this – and it’s ridiculously abrupt ending was sort of a slap in the face as a further insult!
Note: This ebook novella also entitled "Babe on Board" (which makes no better sense...)
I have previously read this story but somehow my review was not found.
A raunchy sometimes almost humorous tale about a private investigator (Harry McGlade) who has a one nighter with a mob boss girlfriend that turns into a little more after Harry blackmails the mobster.
This story was originally titled “Jailbait” but later the title was switched to “ Babe on Board”
This is a Jack Daniels short mostly about Harry McGlade how how where his baby momma came from. Entertaining read. Always like these characters. Jack was pregnant in this one too. Decent read.

Love Harry. Perfect in a Novalla, Novel would be too stupid.
Story itself is ok-ish. But it's Harry, so my 12 year old inner child enjoyed it massively. Also this 12 year old inner me decided that 5 stars is the absolute and only reasonable rating here.
I really think I read a book that was part of a series.. I hate when that happens it takes so much from character development and ruins any connection that I could have with the characters. I am not using a stat rating because of the size of the book. What I did like about the book was the fun quirkiness of the book. (I do not even know if it is a word but, what I can say is if you want a laugh read this).
