And Jorah Holt has a secret that could get him killed.
Now that Jorah Holt is nineteen, he must become part of a society that detests him. Worse still, Jorah has a secret; he's what The Westlands call a 'Double Blank'. Double Blanks have no use to The Westlands and Jorah knows his secret could get him killed.
As he tries to hide his true self, he's confronted by the realisation that The Westlands might not be all it seems. Can he uncover the truth before his time is up?
For fans of The Handmaid's Tale, Divergent, The Hunger Games, Unwind and The Power - you'll love Double Blank.
From the start I was drawn into this story. The idea of having a reverse tale of the Handmaiden Tale where men are subjected to being women’s matches is very intriguing. This author did a great job of creating this dystopian world making this book an instant page turner that made me crave very detail. It was by far the most interesting book I’ve read so far in 2023. 10/10 no notes.
Following the main character through the events is one that you won't want to put down.
A well constructed story to explore the ways that a society can change and accept certain ways of thinking so quickly. Or at least appear to.
If you are looking for a dystopian read, this is one to try. Having the main character also be gay, develops the story and connects the events further for the story itself.
The ways Kenny has brought in characters to develop, to show the passage of time and use of memory helps the story, and the setting of it, grow throughout.
what a breathtaking story. the character development of jorah is absolutely insane to witness. the whole novel is full of emotion so raw that it’s almost palpable. i definitely would like to see a sequel!
I just finished reading Double Blank, and I need the sequel immediately!
This was my first time reading a Dystopian, so my expectations weren't that high. But at the same time, I loved Elise's first book. So I knew I would either way be in for a treat. Needless to say, Elise has once again managed to create a masterpiece.
I cannot tell you how much my heart breaks for Jorah. He went through so freaking much in this book, and yet somehow he managed to grow so much as a person. His character was written extremely well, and I loved every bit of it.
The woman-centered society was a nice new thing to imagine. It was refreshing to read about a society almost the exact opposite of the one I live in. There was so much that angered me, and so my heart was fully in support of rebellions like Joran, Wen, Logan, and Melissa.
These side characters were beautiful! Toby, my god, I loved him so much! Despite what he did, he is my favourite from this book other than Jorah and Nye. The writing in this book is so gripping and kept me glued to my seat the entire time. Even though I have finished the book now, I am left craving for more.
I am not sure if this tops the author's first book for me, but I am so glad I decided to read it despite my lack of knowledge with this genre. If you like Dystopian Thrillers, give this one a try!
The storyline, the characters and the world created were fantastic... I cannot for the life of me work out why, but it just didn't grab me! Saying that, I would read a sequel. Possibly the strangest and least helpful review, I've ever given!
I loved this book! The premise was fantastic and really got you thinking. Even as a woman, it was shocking to read how men were being treated. It took a moment for me to step back from the book and flip it to realise how normalised this treatment of women is. It highlights parts of society and really makes you think. ‘Double Blank’ is the term used to describe gay men who don’t want children. It’s in interesting (and heart wrenching) take on how these people are deemed better off dead. Men are beaten without a second thought, sexually abused, and forced into career paths without any say. It’s shocking and even more so when you realise how much of it reflects how woman have been and still are treated in our modern day society.
A really great story with likeable characters, a great plot, a little romance, and a lot to get you thinking. Would highly recommend.
A gripping dystopian thriller with plenty of twists and turns, and well-written, believable characters. The premise is pretty much Handmaid's Tale in reverse, where women dominate and men are oppressed, until they start to fight back. The novel provides an interesting analysis of whether true gender equality can ever take place, and whether if achieved would one side start to try to take control again.
