In this enlightening collaboration between acclaimed writer and community activist Margo Perin and men and women incarcerated in San Francisco County Jail, the life stories hidden in the shadows of the US American prison industrial complex are revealed. Through their raw, powerful writing, people who are incarcerated artistically explore themselves and the effects of systemic injustice on their lives. Featuring Perin’s own life story of being raised by a fugitive, this collection reveals the interconnectedness of people who live on both sides of the criminal (in)justice fence and the challenges facing formerly incarcerated men and women after release. As the writers’ authentic voices ring out, they call on us to shine a light into the shadows of our own lives and begin a process of healing that benefits us all. Only the Dead Can Kill: Stories from Jail is made possible by a grant from the Creative Work Fund, a program that supports Bay Area artists to develop new works through collaborations with nonprofit organizations.
