maybe even 3.5? it was nothing stellar or particularly new but this was honestly a lot of fun. definitely a 4 in enjoyment.
at first the magic school setting read a lot like Hogwarts, and in my mind Oriana and Vincent overlapped quite a bit with Hermione and Draco. possibly because i started reading this with the manga, where the characters are drawn pretty similar to their Harry Potter counterparts.
later i switched over to the novel version published in Shosetsuka ni Narou, but the manga designs stayed stuck in my head. needless to say their personalities, especially Oriana, were not similar at all, so eventually they solidified in my head as separate unique characters.
what i mean with all this is, what first started as mild interest towards this story just because the setting reminded me of the Harry Potter world, soon enough had me reading it into late hours of the night, unable to put it down. which also got me questioning, why this isn't more well known? its seriously a lot better than other isekai and yarinaoshi novels that are all the rage.
its also the first japanese novel i read that has writing style more similar to western books, which was a very pleasant surprise. until now, all j-novels ive read relied really heavily on dialogue. and i'm not only talking about light novels which are famous for this. without many insights on to what the characters are feeling or descriptions of the setting, barely any mood is created. because of this ive always had trouble finding them engaging versus what i'm more used to reading in english. that was not the case with this book and i really wish more of them were written like this
Vincent's POV was especially entertaining to read. i'm actually usually not too fond of characters like him: the mendoukusai otoko type. but getting a peek into his thought process really sold the misunderstanding trope in this case and i found myself agreeing with him quite a bit. in the end, Oriana ended up being the harder sell for me as the typical naive, innocent protagonist obsessed with the ML (even though she's supposedly mentally older). however, her misinterpreting Vincent was hilarious a lot of the time so i decided to overlook that; the enjoyment i got from those moments made her personality choice worth it 🤌
really, this was just the cutest. a lot of the time i felt like i was watching protectively over these two being earnest, awkward, well-intentioned teens growing and falling in love. recently, i complained that teen characters that are written like actual realistic teens are annoying to read. i possibly take that back. if they were all as wholesome and fun as this, i could read about them all day long.
