Cristianini’s core point about modern AI is sound. It doesn’t “understand” the world - rather it learns patterns and optimizes a score. Give it a metric and it will chase that, not your intentions. This is why these types of systems can look like a genius one minute and then truly bizarre the next.
What I liked about the book is the idea that AI is engineered infrastructure. It is clear as to the value of machine driven prediction using (large-scale) data regularities. And it is pragmatic about designing in governance by stating the objective, designing guardrails and auditing outcomes.
The only downside stems from the fact that the author was aiming for short and understandable. So the book stays high-level. But as a lens for understanding, building and regulating modern AI, it’s an excellent read.
Highly recommended, and 4.5 stars from me.
