The fruits of yesterday's shopping, and I came up trumps this time. Campert is a real poet, and manages a synthesis of stateliness and bounce in his lines. (He also has subjects, which are mostly urban I guess but I'm not really in this for the content.)

The closing "Solo" is as effective an evocation and emulation I've ever seen of the unpremeditated unfurling of a really good jazz solo.

Is not verbally very difficult, but there are a lot of things that wouldn't translate: the riff "ik zie ik zie wat ik zie" (I see I see what I see) in "Introductie" is a variation on "ik zie ik zie wat jij niet ziet" (I see I see what you don't see), which is the Dutch version of the children's game "I spy with my little eye", and what are you supposed to do with that, asphyxiate it with footnotes?
