Bob Howitt is one of New Zealand's most celebrated and prolific rugby journalists and authors. He has written 16 books on the game, including the three volumes of Rugby Greats. He has collaborated with famous players, coaches and, most recently, a referee on successful rugby biographies. Among the subjets he has worked with are Sid Going, Bryan Williams, Frank Bunce and Walter Little, Laurie Mains, Graham Henry and Paddy O'Brien. In 2004 he co-authored All Black Magic which celebrated 100 years of All Black tests.
This book is a fun biography of Sid Going, one of the most famous members of the New Zealand All Blacks in history. The author is a journalist and it's obvious when you pay attention to the writing style. Howitt is good at describing rugby tactics and moves and actually remembers the games in good details. It's perfect for me, an American who doesn't remember these huge games but I wonder if a New Zealander would get bored.
Because Howitt, being a journalist, includes gobs of pictures and photographs from Sid Going's life. These pictures complement the book nicely--even though they are in black and white.
