Erle Stanley Gardner was an American lawyer and author of detective stories who also published under the pseudonyms A.A. Fair, Kyle Corning, Charles M. Green, Carleton Kendrake, Charles J. Kenny, Les Tillray, and Robert Parr.

Innovative and restless in his nature, he was bored by the routine of legal practice, the only part of which he enjoyed was trial work and the development of trial strategy. In his spare time, he began to write for pulp magazines, which also fostered the early careers of Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler. He created many different series characters for the pulps, including the ingenious Lester Leith, a "gentleman thief" in the tradition of Raffles, and Ken Corning, a crusading lawyer who was the archetype of his most successful creation, the fictional lawyer and crime-solver Perry Mason, about whom he wrote more than eighty novels. With the success of Perry Mason, he gradually reduced his contributions to the pulp magazines, eventually withdrawing from the medium entirely, except for non-fiction articles on travel, Western history, and forensic science.

First published in 1935, this is a very early entry in the Perry Mason series, back in the day when there were still cuspidors in the courtroom and when both the police and the lawyers could still cut the kind of corners that would get them arrested, disbarred and jailed in this day and age.

Perry is fresh off an exhausting murder case when Charles Ashton, a cantankerous, frail, elderly caretaker comes into the office and insists on seeing him. Curious, Perry sees the man who wants him to defend his cat, Clinker. Ashton's employer has recently died in a fire, but the employer's will provides that the caretaker has a job for life, looking after the place.

The dead employer's grandchildren move into the home, but one of them hates the cat and insists that the caretaker get rid of it. Otherwise, the snotty grandkid says he will poison it. The will does not specify that the caretaker gets to keep the cat, who is, naturally, the caretaker's best friend in the world.

Of course Perry will take the case; of course, someone will soon be murdered; of course the case will be convoluted beyond all belief; of course Clinker the Cat will turn out to be the most important witness, and of course just when Perry's client seems headed for a certain date with the hangman, Perry will pull a rabbit out of the hat and save the day.

If you've ever read any of these books, you'd expect nothing less and you won't be disappointed. These earlier books are among my favorites of the eighty-five novels that would ultimately detail Perry's adventures. The characters and the formula were still new, and Perry had a lot more freedom to maneuver, with his skeleton keys and a lot of other devices that the law and the Bar Association prohibited him from using in later years. The Case of the Caretaker's Cat is a quick, fun read and an enjoyable trip back to the early days of pulp fiction crime.

5 Stars. For a baffling Perry Mason mystery, for some great detective work by him and private investigator Paul Drake, and for a wonderful scene between him and his devoted secretary Della Street, this one's for you. Let's do them in reverse. Are you ready for Perry and Della's honeymoon? They choose the Biltmore in Los Angeles - why not go bold and expensive - and register under the assumed names of Mr. and Mrs. Watson Clammert. No more gossip from me on that matter. As to Drake, he shows his talent big time - tracking car sales, cats, hollow canes, and a former nurse named Edith DeVoe, just to name a few of the challenges Mason throws his way. What's the case? Charles Ashton, the elderly caretaker for Peter Laxter, recently deceased in a fire, has been guaranteed a place to live in Laxter's will. But Sam Laxter, Peter's grandson, says that doesn't included Clinker, Ashton's cat. The caretaker quickly visits Perry's office and hires him, over the objection of Della who suggests a cruise to the Orient instead! It escalates to murder and Mason takes on a two-legged client as well as the cat. He and Della even appear as witnesses in the preliminary hearing! I enjoyed it. (Fe2024)

The Case of the Caretaker's Cat by Erle Stanley Gardner is the 7th book in the Perry Mason Mystery series. According to Peter Laxter's will, his caretaker has been guaranteed a job and place to live for life, but when his cat is threatened by the heirs, Perry Mason is hired. Fast paced, with plenty of twists and manoeuvres that we have come to expect. I have been a Perry Mason fan for a long time and love these books. Always fun and entertaining.

It's quite fun to be an Erle Stanley Gardner fan, and of course can't forget my special kitty. This was a very good example of a good read. I enjoyed it very much. How fun to see my library branch with a couple more copies. Yea!!!

Peter Baxter's family are shocked to learn that he prepared a new will shortly before his death in a tragic fire leaving everything to his caretaker, James Hing. Kenneth Baxter and his cousin Stuart Baxter are particularly distressed and have every intention of challenging the validity of the will in court. James Hing approaches Perry Mason to help him defend the will and his inheritance but he isn't being entirely truthful with him. In fact, James is arrested for Baxter's murder, and the convoluted truth finally emerges. Wanting to test his heirs' loyalty and respect, Baxter planned to fake his death. Hing admits to setting the fire, but Baxter was not supposed to die. Perry takes on the case knowing that someone other than his client made it impossible for Baxter to leave the burning house.

The solution to this early Perry Mason mystery (his seventh book, which was released in 1935) is so convoluted that it takes Perry three pages of nonstop exposition to explain it all. But, Perry Mason books are not about trying to figure out whodunit before Perry does, its about the methodical approach to putting the pieces together and the fun byplay between the characters of Perry, Della Street and Paul Drake. Della actually has to pretend to be on her honeymoon with Perry in this outing.

The 7th novel down my "journey into time" (started in 2015) to discover old treasures like the Perry Mason Series, is, once again, a complete page-turner. However, this particular episode is probably the weakest as compared to the last 6 novels.

The Case Of The Caretaker’s Cat has possibly the most convoluted plot of the books in the series so far. In his will, Peter Laxter guaranteed his faithful caretaker a job and a place to live for life. But Laxter’s grandson Sam says the deal doesn’t include the caretaker’s cat. On a whim, Perry Mason takes the case, against the advice of his assistant and his secretary, Della Street. Mason’s reply is “A man only has a lease on life. All that really counts is a man’s ability to live, to get the most out of it as he goes through it. I get a kick out of playing a no-limit game.” What is at stake in this one isn’t just whether a cat can stay in a house, there’s more: a million dollars in cash and some diamonds. Mason finds a web of greed and treachery among the heirs, and has to put up with a most repulsive attorney who represents some of them. Who murdered Laxter? What has the cat got to do with it? The answers are both less and more than the unsuspecting reader might expect, and certainly Mason makes a very unusual move in the courtroom near the end of the book, one that just might win him the case, or might end up in his being disbarred.

Perry Mason is a man who enjoys his work. He likes his cases but the real pleasure for him lies in pitting his wits against criminals, against the police and against the DA. The joy he takes in this is communicated to the reader and helps make each Perry Mason novel just so much fun. Perry Mason is referred as a "Wizard Of The Court Room", more a sleuth than a lawyer, who uses the fold of the legal system to hunt for the truth, takes calculated risks AND utilizes his devious mind to uncover pure evidence that would solve the case. Mr. Gardner continues to follow the KISS rule. 201 pages are all you get to race through this riveting story. Till the very end you will keep gasping "What is Perry Mason up to?" You will, once again, let go of your sleep to get to the bottom of things.

Perry Mason, a character created in 1930s, can easily be a part of 2019/2020 and the author would need to change NOTHING (not even a word) to adjust to the advanced world since 1930s. Now, THAT, for sure is what is evergreen. The story telling has the same intensity now as it did then. This episode continues to be a fine example of American Literature from the yesteryears. No wonder Gardner was one of the best-selling writers of all times, and certainly one of the best-selling mystery authors ever. There are a total of 82 novels (which I now fortunately own in my shelves). It's a treasure cove indeed!!

Though I did enjoy this book, I must say that this novel, while interesting and having an unusual ending. I enjoyed this book very much. Highly Recommend.

I've been reading Gardner's Perry Mason books for many years. I love the general setting: the characters of Perry, Della, Paul, Lt. Tragg, and Hamilton Burger. That, and the ingenious plots, are why I read Perry Mason.

On the whole, the ones written by about 1953 are the best. This is the seventh one, from 1935. As in all the early ones, Perry is a hard boiled aggressive ingenious fighter, not the more urbane established figure of the much later TV series.

But I don't like this one. It's over the top.

The story begins when Charles Ashton comes into Perry's office with an unusual story. He has been the caretaker for one of the two houses of wealthy Peter Laxter for many years. A couple years before, he and Mr. Laxter were in a car accident. Ashton has a limp as a result. Sadly, very recently there was a bad fire that destroyed the other of Mr. Laxter's houses and killed Mr. Laxter. The executor for the estate is one of Peter Laxter's grandchildren, Sam Laxter. The will states that Ashton is to be kept on as caretaker in perpetuity. However, it doesn't mention Ashton's cat. Sam Laxter says he hates cats and will destroy this one! He says he may have to keep Ashton on, but not the cat. Ashton wants Perry to save the cat and his job as caretaker.

Sam Laxter and two other grandchildren had been living with the elder Laxter for some time, and so they and some servants have all moved into the other house with Ashton. Ashton says the two young men aren't worth much, but he adores the granddaughter Winifred. He is puzzled that Winifred is not given much in the will, but the two men are well provided for. Perhaps for that reason, Winifred has disappeared.

Perry writes a letter to Sam Laxter to throw a scare into him. That prompts a visit from Sam Laxter, the other grandchild Frank Oafley, and their lawyer, the pettifogging shyster Nat Shuster, Shuster is convinced that the cat is a smokescreen, that Perry is really trying to challenge the will, and is really trying to get money for Winifred. Perry is angry at Shuster and decides to investigate the whole situation.

Paul Drake finds Winifred. She has opened a little waffle restaurant and lives in the back storeroom. She is proudly self-sufficient, and proud that boyfriend Doug Keene is sticking with her, even though she has no big inheritance from the will. These are classic stock characters in the Perry Mason canon: the determined young people out to make their own way in the world, asking for nothing from anyone.

Drake also learns more about the fire that killed Peter Laxter. Peter Laxter's nurse Edith DeVoe says that on the night of the fire, she happened to see a man, probably Sam Laxter, apparently drunk sitting in his car in the attached garage of the mansion. The car was running and a hose attached to the exhaust pipe was taking the exhaust into the house's heating system! Was someone trying to kill Peter Laxter with carbon monoxide?

Curiously, Ashton phones to say maybe Perry shouldn't push so hard and investigate so much. Why would he do that? Hmmm... But the point becomes moot as Ashton is murdered! Suspicion falls on Doug Keene and maybe Winifred too. Events unfold quickly. It seems that a great deal of cash is missing from the estate of Peter Laxter, and maybe some diamonds too. DeVoe's story and evidence that maybe the fire that killed Peter Laxter was arson is given to Hamilton Burger. Burger decides to exhume the body of Peter Laxter, and there is another murder!

If that weren't enough, Ashton seems to have a mysterious half-brother named Watson Clammert. Did he take some of Peter's money? Perry runs him to ground with an ingenious ruse in which he and Della pretend to be newly-weds, Mr. and Mrs. Clammert. Just how far is Della willing to go in the pretense? Oh ho!

Now, it's good to have a complex plot in a murder mystery. We expect it. But this one is over the top! This is just TOO complicated. Many actions of people, not just the murderer, are utterly improbable.

I don't want to give away any spoilers, but here is a summary of most of the events on the night Ashton was murdered:

Edith DeVoe and Frank Oafley get married. Edith DeVoe calls Douglas Keene to come over and talk. (On her wedding night?) He picks up the cat, Clinker, at Ashton's, takes it to Winifred, and then goes over to Edith's apartment. Meanwhile Ashton is murdered. By the time Keene gets to DeVoe's apartment, she is dead, apparently also murdered! Meanwhile, Burger, with an aide and Perry, has exhumed the body of Peter Laxter, then gone over to the big house where Ashton is living. There they find Oafley digging in the rose bushes, looking for diamonds because of an anonymous tip. As they are talking Sam Laxter drives up with an injured arm, as he was just in a car accident. They discover the body of Ashton. Perry soon leaves to visit Winifred. He leaves there with Clinker and gives the cat to Della. He goes to talk to Edith DeVoe, whom he discovers is dead. Meanwhile Douglas Keene has gone home to his apartment where he discovers some of his clothing has been soaked in blood! Meanwhile Burger goes to interview Edith DeVoe (he heard of DeVoe's story about the car exhaust.) Perry, who is still at the DeVoe apartment, sees Burger coming and ingeniously avoids meeting him by joining a poker game in a neighboring apartment. Burger discovers the body of Edith DeVoe.

OK, sure, that could happen. (It's even worse than that. I'm leaving out some spoilers.)

We can speculate that Gardner, now successful with the first six books doing well, threw himself into this one, going for a plot no one could ever guess. He succeeded. But it's frenetic, over the top, almost a parody of a mystery story.

Other notes:

Perry and Della pretend to marry. There is humor.

Hamilton Burger comes to the gravesite to watch the exhumation of Peter Laxter. He's almost friendly to Mason. Burger does a lot of traveling around and investigating things himself. You won't see that in later books.

Good court room scenes. Excellent use of Hamilton Burger.

Recurring themes: Ingenious subterfuges.

Perry talks about his philosophy of life (obviously it's Gardner's):

“I’m not a lawyer,” Mason grinned, “except as a sideline. I’m an adventurer.” He plays a no-limit game.

“What the hell can a man lose? He can’t lose his life because he doesn’t own that, anyway. He only has a lease on life. He can lose money, and money doesn’t mean one damn thing as compared with character. All that really counts is a man’s ability to live, to get the most out of it as he goes through it, and he gets the most kick out of it by playing a no-limit game.”

Characters who we meet:

Charles Ashton, caretaker with a cat.
Peter Laxter, recently deceased wealthy man with three grandchildren, employer of Ashton.
Sam Laxter, grandchild number 1, executor of the estate of Peter.
Frank Oafley, grandchild number 2.
Winifred Laxter, grandchild number 3.
Nat Shuster, pettifogging shyster lawyer for grandchildren 1 and 2.
Doug Keene, faithful boy friend of Winifred.
Jim Brandon, chaeuffer.
Nora Abbington, maid.
Mrs. Pixley, housekeeper.
Edith DeVoe, nurse.
Watson Clammert, mysterious half brother of Ashton.

and

Clinker, the cat.

Still, recommended. You've got to read this one. Keep a notebook handy.

One of the wilder rides in the Perry Mason oeuvre, and that's saying a lot. There's a green Packard, a brand new Buick, a couple of cats, and waffles. This book is so early in the series that in the last few pages it teases the next one. Mason's law clerk enters to share some details foreshadowing the case of the sleepwalker's niece (footnote promises "will be published early in 1936"). A swell read from the golden age of paperback books.

I have been reading nothing but history and biography for months and decided to treat myself to a good mystery, and Erle Stanley Gardner never disappoints! He was not a great stylist, but his plots are the best! I can never figure them out. He keeps me turning the pages, and isn't that what a good mystery does?

I practiced law for 30 years and I never met a lawyer like Perry Mason. First, he is more of a detective than an attorney. (In fact, a character in this novel, I think it was Hamilton Burger, the long suffering D.A. who always loses to Mason, even tells Mason that he is a good lawyer but a better detective.) Second, Mason always skates on the ethical line -- or just plain crosses it. Finally, in real life, the guilty party seldom comes forward and confesses in time to acquit the defendant. In sum, I sometimes suspend my disbelief when I read these books.

But I love the Perry Mason series! I hope to read them all.

Actually would be 3.5 stars if goodreads.com allowed that. A fun read, but a bit too convoluted (though the clues are there for the most part) and littered with corpses (even one which is exhumed).

The writing has gotten a bit smoother, but still has clunkers like yet another woman (Winifred, this time) with "blazing black eyes," "a quick twist of [Della's] lithe body," and Mason speaking with "a savage impatience."

This is a somewhat softer and more caring Mason than in the earlier books, though the gruffness
and control-freak qualities remain. I was uncomfortable with his asking Della to fake a honeymoon, given the ambiguity of their relationship (they hold hands twice in this story). Still, she handles this as well as she handles everything. And her driving is memorable aggressive.

Anyway, a fast and fun read, though hardly memorable.

I would give this book 6 out of 5 stars if I could, that's how good it was. This book was a murder mystery, and it was such a page turner that I couldn't stop reading it. There are so many plot twists and so many details that you don't understand exactly what happens until the end. I had to read the end twice 😂. Anyways, I highly recommend this book. I read it in about 3 days, and if you're looking for a thriller or murder mystery or overall mystery, please read this or the other books of the Perry Mason series!!!!

I love these books. Just like the TV series, it keeps you guessing right until the last few pages.

Complex story of people fighting over their grandfather's estate. The cat belongs to Ashton, and seems to be the only one who doesn't murder someone! Perry, Della, and Paul work to find outwhere the money and the diamonds went after the country house burns and grandpa is burned to death, or is he?

The client is a cat which is pretty fun. There's also lots of Della in this book. Both Mason and Della take the stand in this one. I'm not sure I've seen that yet in the earlier books. I definitely didn't figure it all out before the end but I did have my suspicions when I stopped to think about it. Fortunately, I didn't think too hard. I just sat back and enjoyed the reveal.
