I don't think anyone will be surprised by the warm and fuzzy ending to this sweet and slow-paced romance. It gives the audience what they want, though maybe with twice the number of volumes necessary.

Shiraishi has been pretty visible for a while now and he has a date planned with Kubo during the class trip. But the course of true love never met the mangaka who couldn’t stretch it out further than necessary.

Manga’s end arrives and that means that all the hinting and promising of the preceeding eleven volumes is finally ready to pay off in satisfactory fashion. And it mostly does, especially if you were particularly invested. But getting invested is the tricky part.

Credit where it’s due - the picture that Shiraishi takes of Kubo amidst Kyoto’s torii gates is probably the nicest composition of the entire series and reflects the skill of the artist as well as the perspective of a young man in love. It’s a great little moment.

The pre-confession, which I will not be spoiling any further than that, is another little spark amidst the slightly damp kindling, suggesting that the story could have had more to it if it had chosen to. Which it did not.

Everything else feels perfunctory and I’m not going to be shocking anybody by saying that I feel this should have ended about four volumes ago. It’s not like I don’t read tons manga with romantic dithering - 90% of romance manga is dithering - but there needs to be something more than what we got here.

Oh, everybody’s great friends? Yeah, they have been for ages now. Shiraishi likes them and they like him? There’s nothing new here and, in the absence of anything new, it doesn’t have much to recommend it. These characters have been, at best, one note throughout and you cannot build this many volumes with this little depth and have it remain compelling.

Part of it is also down to the attempts at drama falling flat - that moment where Shiraishi helps a kid who reminds him of his younger self is just so, so flat it’s basically nothing. It doesn’t even feel like an earned moment of growth. He just does it. We knew he was a good guy, this doesn’t add a thing.

Everybody gets their last little moments and there’s a fun epilogue that does surprisingly good in a couple of pages, which yet again makes me think this was stretched out for less than artistic purposes. If you’ve come along for the whole ride there’s no reason not to keep going to this last stop, really.

It’s not bad, I do want to emphasize that, but merely okay isn’t exactly a ringing endorsement either. It’s no lie that I could easily pick three books that are basically just like this that work twice as good and feel like they have something keeping them worthwhile even as they too wait for the big confession.

3 stars - if you were super excited to see this conclude, bump it up a star. I don’t feel like this wasted my time, but I doubt I’ll remember a lick of it in a year either. Passable.

3.4/5.

I was a little let down by this ending☹️. Most of the series kinda stayed at like a 7/10 ish, where it was decently nice to read, especially later on with the group antics.

I think I was just a bit disappointed with how there was a PERFECT opportunity for the confession, but it gets interrupted by the friend group. This is a trope I really don’t like, especially when the timing for it is really good. And then the mc speaks his feelings out loud and doesn’t realise the female mc is behind him, so the tension that accompanies a confession scene was kinda stomped on.

I mean they still get a confession scene at the end, but I really didn’t like how the author decided to play it out.
Overall, it was a decent series, didn’t really do a whole lot different compared to your standard slice-of-life romance though.

If I had a nickel for every time I read a shojo that ended with a school trip, I'd have 2 nickels this week, which isn't much but it's weird it happened twice.

But it's great because it not only involves the whole Shiraishi x Kubo plot but also Shiraishi's journey from isolation to having friends. And this line:
Let's stay together until seeing one another again is just a given.
is one of the best ways I've seen to describe both friendships and romantic partners. Because it's true; it takes work, but it's true.

This series has 12 volumes.

This was a cute read and I enjoyed this much more than I was expecting. The love story is a big part of the overall narrative but I was pleasantly surprised with how much the story focused on the Shiraishi and his group of friends becoming a part of his life. It was also refreshing to have a series without the love triangle, misunderstanding, nosebleeds over the slightest touch, etc.. This was wholesome from start to finish and I am very glad that I gave it a try and stuck with it.

As Great A Conclusion as the Whole Manga

I happened upon the anime for this manga and thoroughly enjoyed it as a light, fluffy but also poignant romance story between a kid who leaves no presence and a girl who is the perfect first friend. 140 chapters later we get the a fantastic wrap up and a short hop to the future that puts a fantastic bow on one of the most wholesome and healthy rom-com stories out there. Read the whole series and your serotonin levels will be on high!

Some say this could have ended volumes ago, I disagree. It had the right amount of slow burn romance with two wonderful protagonists. This last volume was my favorite of the dozen printed with some really nice large panel artwork and backgrounds. I liked the bonus chapter, it had just enough of a future outlook with a nice open ending. This was such a pleasant love story that started slowly and built up to a very satisfying end.

I rate this 3.5 stars.

This is the fourth series I have finished this month and sixth this year. I’m so proud of myself, I’m definitely getting better at finishing series.

This was such a sweet, satisfying ending to such a sweet, wholesome series! Yeah, there was some fanservice, but not nearly as much as I was expecting, which I highly appreciated. I'm so happy for our little quiet guy and his group of friends!

The best part is that my stack of unread manga is shrinking! But honestly, check out Seven Seas release of The Dangers in My Heart (The anime for that one is complete on HiDive for streaming in the US) for a recent, better telling of this same kind of story.

Squealing and kicking my feet they are adorable..but omg I kept getting mad. Friend group’s interrupting a confession is always a hated trope of mine and it drove me nuts here lmao.

Anyway, cute simple series over all! I like!

Adorable love story. Nothing particularly fantastic about this story, but it did an awesome job at warming my heart with each chapter. Each character in this story is so lovable, especially the protagonist and heroine.
