Is it just me? Is anyone else and their sweetie whisked from a romantic getaway and end up in the J. Edgar Hoover Building in Washington DC? I don't even get to show Royal my sexy new underwear.
The FBI think I'm a Medium. They want me to "communicate" with the victims of a particularly brutal murder. I have a hard time believing the Federal Bureau of Investigation would seek the help of a psychic investigator, let alone one from Utah. I don't think they're being honest with me.
What I discover at the crime scene tells me the killer is not human. I'm surprised when the agents reach the same conclusion. Luckily, they are way off base.
I don't expect to revisit old places, or see old faces who demand we quit the investigation. I don't expect to risk losing everything and everyone I cherish.
Born in England, Linda ended up in the USA and lived in New Mexico, Idaho and California before settling in the Wasatch Mountains of northern Utah near a small community called Eden. She lives there with her husband and Scottish terrier, and an awful lot of wildlife. She is the author of the Whisperings paranormal mysteries: Along Came a Demon, The Demon Hunters, Dead Demon Walking, Demon Demon Burning Bright, Demon on a Distant Shore, and A Conspiracy of Demons.
Also: Downside Rain, an urban fantasy, and Femme Fatales, a dark urban fantasy short story collection.

This is the third book in Linda’s fantastic paranormal mystery series and probably my favorite of the three (of course any book with Royal in it is going to be high on my list, but more on him later…) What I love most about this series (other than Royal, see a theme here?) is the writing. The expert use of description touches all my senses. I can see, hear and taste things vividly (don’t read this book on an empty stomach because there is a lot of delicious food mentioned). I also love the first person POV. Tiff Banks is smart and no nonsense with a tendency to speak her mind before she thinks, but it is balanced with her insecurities when it comes to Royal, her non-human partner and lover.
Linda does a good job of brining new readers up to speed with the plot, but the events of this story are closely related to what happened in book #2 The Demon Hunters. I suggest readers new to the series start with book #1, Along Came a Demon (only $.99 for kindle).
We learn more about one of Tiff’s ghost roommate, Jack. Yes, she lives with two ghosts, who add quite a bit of humor to the series. The mysterious Dark Cousins, who Tiff was hoping to never see again, have reappeared after a string of brutal murders. Tiff can see the ghosts of people who were violently killed and unfortunately they appear to her the way they died so this isn’t what you would call a “cozy” mystery .
While this is a mystery style series there is a strong, but not overpowering, romantic element. Tiff and Royal’s first meetings had me laughing, and I have enjoyed watching their relationship mature to where it is now in book #3. There is a scene in the book when Tiff realizes what Royal means to her that had my in tears. For those who love a good alpha male, Royal will melt your heart (he cooks for freaking sake!) and Linda’s expertise with description will have you wanting a demon of your own. But I must add here that we meet a rather arrogant and, from my POV, smexy friend of Royal’s named Christopher Plowman (I will refrain from making a crude comment here, you are welcome ) and I hope he appears in the next book.
Of all of the books in the Whispering series, Dead Demon Walking is the best. It was chocked full of mystery, romance, action and intrigue. It also answered some lingering questions from the second book.
In this installment, Tiff receives a phone call from one of the detectives at the Clarion P.D. He informs her that someone is asking about the status of an old missing person case involving Tiff's ghost of a roommate, Jack. This leads to one of many mysteries being revealed about Jack's past.
Next, while on vacation with Royal, the FBI approaches Tiff for her assistance with a series of mass murders and she discovers that she knew one of the victims. This leads to an encounter with Gia Sabato from book 2 and the Dark Cousins.
I do not want to say too much because I do not want to spoil the book for anyone. However, the reason this book is so much better than the first two was because we actually saw Tiff battle the bad guy instead of talk. It was very much needed since the last book was rather anti-climatic. Read this book. It truly was very good. My only complaint was the ending.
Still loving these characters, human, Gelpha and Dark Cousins! Although the heat between Royal and Tiff is out of this world in more ways than one, I appreciate that that part of the story isn't unduly focused on. Rather, we get only slightly more of a glimpse than Mel and Jack. The case is always the focus and the author creates a deliciously complex story which winds down imaginative paths. I am thoroughly looking forward to the next chapter in this series!
I love this series and this was definitely the best so far. I read it in two days!! Each book has added to the last and for me that's what makes a series. It's nice that each book can stand alone, which these can, but it's awesome when each builds on the last. Some questions have been answered yet there are hints more to come. Can't wait for the next!!!
Dead Demon Walking is a well-delivered, fast-paced punch with a mystery to boot. Tiff and Royal are dynamic as ever as their romance continues on in this third book. As a couple they’re matched perfectly. The only thing that gets in their way is the fact that Royal is from another world and has promises to that world he must keep. That promise is something Tiff can’t forget no matter what.
Meanwhile, Tiff is thrown into one situation after another where her talent for speaking to the violently slain comes to the test. First in Boston, then with the FBI. Each time becomes a tense adventure and you never know what to expect.
As Tiff and Royal become more and more embroiled in the killings that the FBI are also involved in. Things get messier and messier. Both of them get stretched to the limits of their endurance and their relationship will be put to the test once again. In one heart-stopping thrill after another we follow them until the very end.
This was by far the best book of the series. I had such fun reading it. While it was only 232 pages it felt like a much longer book. Nothing felt abbreviated or cut short. Can the next book even live up to this one?
I really like this series. It is full of action, adventure and wonderful well written characters. I love that they are quick reads not full of the boring filler so often found in books these days. The only problem I am having , (and what kept this from being a 5 star read) .There is little to no growth in the main characters attitude. She repeatedly is told in the first two books that being human makes her vulnerable. She is repeatedly beat to a pulp by non-humans. Does she ever learn from this…….NO! She does not! This has become very irritating and predictable. I caught myself eye rolling as she smarted off AGAIN to someone who could kill her with a blink of an eye. In fact , Its starting to be unreasonable that someone hasn’t killed her yet. If she doesn’t show a little growth in the next book I likely will call it quits on this series which is sad because this was a great premise, with wonderful characters. In books , as in life , we are expected to LEARN from our mistakes. We are expected to grow and mature as life leads us down twist and turns. I am all for a spitfire , with attitude who can take care of herself. I DON’T endorse one who just cant learn from her mistakes and keeps making the same ones over and over.
It's not easy to live with a partner who you can't trust to tell you everything. Especially if that partner is a demon and if he likes to put your partnership to the test without real need. But then, at least he's one of the nicer demons. Tiff Banks also has to deal with the less nice kind of this race, and that's where the trouble starts. Lin Welch's writing really drew me into the story in no time. I couldn't put her book away, neither I could help myself feeling, suffering with Tiff. I love this book!
Tiff Banks can't catch a break, first the FBI wants her to visit homicide scenes. Scenes that appear to be all over the country and one that hits close to home. Then Dale Jericho is interested in locating Jack, but won't tell Tiff why. Tiff and Royal are in for a battle of a life time. One that takes Tiff deeper into the lives of the Gelphas and the dark cousins. The Gelphas warriors are no match for the intruder, only Tiff is left standing. Yet, questions still go unanswered and who to trust is a problem.
So many things happening! More about the Dark Cousins mentioned in the last book. Jack has a past. Tiff and Royal work out their differences from the previous book. One really needs to read this series in order since they are all so connected. Excellent writer!
the plot is clearly becoming more complicated and the characters are developing many more facets. it is become a very enjoyable series to read. I look forward to continuing to next book.
Way too much details for people, places, and things. I got bored and skipped a lot. I still like Tiff and Royal. I hope the next book will be more like books one and two.
