Happenstance…or God’s Great Plan?

She’s the bold, free-spirited type. She’s cute, she’s fun, and she’s following God. She’s Sierra Jensen, Christy Miller’s good friend, ready for her junior year of high school! All twelve books in the popular Sierra Jensen series come together in four volumes to reveal the ups and downs of Sierra’s incredible God-led journey!

Volume Paul’s voice lives in her memory, but now it’s loud, clear, and right behind her in Close Your Eyes . With summer fast approaching, it is Without a Doubt bound to be Sierra’s best yet. In With This Ring , she can’t help but ponder the meaning of first kisses and lifetime commitments.

Close Your Eyes

Sierra Jensen has prayed and prayed for the unattainable Paul, but no answers have arrived yet. She hopes a visit with her classmates to a homeless shelter will take her mind off Paul, but guess what? He’s working there! Finally they talk, and before Sierra knows it, Paul agrees to come over for dinner. Their evening together is perfect—until Randy shows up on Sierra’s doorstep! Can things get any more confusing?

Without a Doubt

What could be more fun than a backpacking expedition? Sierra can’t wait to go, especially since things in her life have gotten so…complicated. Paul has moved to Scotland, and Randy is moving into Sierra’s heart. But just when things start to make sense, Sierra is asked out by Drake—the gorgeous guy her best friend, Amy, likes. How can Sierra even think about Drake when she knows doing so will hurt Amy and Randy? When a freak snowstorm hits, Sierra suddenly realizes what really matters most—but is it too late?

With This Ring

Sierra is on her way to Southern California for the very best reason of a wedding! Tracy and Doug’s long-awaited I dos are about to happen, and Sierra is eager to join Christy Miller and the rest of their friends. As soon as she arrives, Sierra discovers that everyone seems to be in love—except for her. That’s okay…she has what she needs—a gold purity ring from her dad and a vow of her to save herself for marriage. But when Sierra returns home, she wonders if her best friend, Amy, has settled for less than God’s best. Can Sierra convince her that purity is worth celebrating?

Story Behind the Book

“After writing the twelve-book Christy Miller series for teens, a new character showed up on the pages of the final novel. Her name was Sierra Jensen, and she was so compelling as a teenage character that readers began asking for a series about Sierra in order to hear more about her life choices. Our family had just moved to Portland at the time, and I found it easy to picture a sixteen-year-old like Sierra shopping at the local vintage clothing stores, hanging out with friends at a garage band concert, and serving at the homeless shelter on weekends.”

Great for young teenagers to read, especially if you want them to understand why they should wait till marriage to have sex.

I loved this one! I love all the Christy Miller and Sierra Jensen books and I wish they didn't have to be over so quickly. I especially needed to hear some of the themes of this one. Recommend this whole series to all teenage girls!

1. Close Your Eyes
I really enjoyed this fourth novel in the Sierra Jensen series. I felt that it was entertaining, thought provoking, and it really held my attention throughout.

In the beginning of the novel, I felt the tension continued to be apparent between Tawni and Sierra. It seems like there is a lot of unresolved emotions that are there but haven't come to the surface yet. However, with that being said, nearing the end of the novel I felt like Sierra and Tawni's relationship did get closer and I'm interested to see how that develops in the ongoing novels and if the unresolved emotions are ever truly acknowledged.

Paul. I have to address Paul because he feels like the big elephant in the room. I love Paul's character but the end of the novel had me really confused. I don't think that is the end we will read of Paul so I'm interesting to see what happens there.

Also, Randy. Randy seems like a very good friend to me and a good romantic partner for someone...that isn't Sierra. Again, the ending of this book confused me so it'll be interesting to see the changes in the relationship going foreward.

Overall, I really really did enjoy this novel. Not only for the characters but I love that it has scripture throughout the story and it also has the reader questioning different scenarios or events. To me, this specific novel had me identifying with 'daydreaming' and how each of our plans that we have imagined can be way different then what God has planned for us. That message had me really thinking. Cannot wait to read more!

2. Without a Doubt
Another enjoyable read. I really love how the story is progressing and the character growth that's evident. Especially with Sierra in this novel. She's faced with some common struggles that happen during the teen years and instead of 'going with the flow', she realizes some of the benefits of not following her peers. In all honesty, at moments I'm surprised with that characters' maturity (Sierra, Randy, and Drake). Some of their discussions and conclusions seemed so unrealistic to what I observed in my teenage years. However, I do know there were mature kids out there. Excited to read more.

3. With This Ring
I really enjoyed the reunion of Sierra with all of her California friends. Her trip to California was fun, entertaining, and real to read. I find there is a real connection between Sierra and them in comparison to Sierra and Amy. I also enjoyed the hint at the end of what's to come. Again, I have to say a lot of the characters (especially the friends in California) come across as more mature than your everyday teenager. However, I believe (and hope) that is still around. Can't wait for the next volume!

Sierra is the type of teenager I wish I was and the type of teenager I am a little afraid I was. Which makes her a relatable, realistic character. Having read the Christy series, I enjoyed the crossover to Sierra, but was also glad to see a completely unique storyline and character. One who is a little more spiritually mature, but still a teenager dealing with life. Gunn does an excellent job developing the character and the relationships over the course of the three books. Like Katie and Christy, Sierra is a little boy crazy, but I find the friendship angle to be stronger in these books which I believe is a valuable theme for teenagers.

I do not have the same nostalgic affinity for Sierra Jensen that I do for Christy Miller, but I still enjoyed re-reading these on my lunch break. I remembered the broad strokes of the plot but had forgotten most of the details.
Lots of boy/relationship drama in these three books. Some friend drama between Sierra and Amy - and what happened to Vicky after Close Your Eyes? She disappeared. A bit heavy handed on the purity message in Without a Doubt and With This Ring. I like the overlap with Christy and her crowd, and getting to be present at Doug and Tracy's wedding.

Every time Sierra's messy room was described, it made me anxious to even read about. Ha!

I liked this second volume of the Sierra Jensen collection. Sierra's story, more so than Christy Miller's, seems much more realistic and Sierra's thoughts remind me of my own at that age. The emphasis on purity is good for young girls to read, however, I also think there should be emphasis on purity of your thoughts and heart as well. It isn't just about physical purity. I think Robin Jones Gunn pretty accurately captures a young girls heart and mind in these books and makes them come alive. A great read for the young and old alike.

I was under the impression that a book couldn’t be as warm , holy, and encouraging as the Christy Miller books. I was wrong. Sierra Jensen books capture that same holy glow that the Christy Miller books have. My heart was melting reading this one and I really enjoyed it!

I do my reviews in the form of a letter, which is why they are written like this.

Dear Robin Jones Gunn,

I will review each of the Sierra Jensen books separately.

Close Your Eyes

I liked this one. I like Randy, and so seeing his character was nice. I think that Amy is a good character, but she and Sierra are so different. Sometimes it's hard to believe that they're friends. I kind of agree with Amy, too. Sierra should get her head away from Paul. At least he finally shows up in this book. They finally talk, but I feel bad for Sierra. He obviously doesn't have a crush on her. I liked that she prayed for him more, though.

Without A Doubt

I was kind of hoping Sierra would go with Randy now. But apparently she can't make up her mind. I like Sierra, but in this book she's kind of annoying. I wish she would just decide who she likes! Drake isn't really charming to me. He's technically her first boyfriend, though. Randy and Amy are a disaster. Their trip is also a disaster. It's rather unfortunate that they don't get to do much. Also, I firmly believe in being pure until marriage, and I don't even think unmarried people should make out, but I thought was Wesley said about kissing was a little annoying. I don't think there's anything wrong with kissing someone you're not marrying. Maybe he was just saying it because Sierra and Drake didn't really know each other that well. If that was the case, then I agree entirely.

With This Ring

Finally Doug and Tracy get married! It was so nice to see them again. I liked how this one started. I like that Sierra's dad took her out and gave her a purity ring. It was so beautiful. It was fun to see Christy and her friends again, but not as good as the last time. Doug's prank went totally awry! I was internally screaming. But Tracy and Doug's wedding was beautiful, and their first kiss was perfect. And Rick! *smoke blows out of ears* Rick was there! I wanted to strangle him because of the way he was acting. He was being a complete and total jerk. But I was glad that Christy and Todd were gleefully together in front of him.

This was a different kind of style, and not even a review, but that's okay. I loved this book, as usual with anything you write.

Sincerely,
Lena Marie

Update on second read through: These books hold so much encouragement at any age. It’s great to be reminded of what I want and have committed to. I also like how these books treat purity as much more of a heart thing than a list of legalistic rules.

Like Sierra, I don’t know about saving my kiss for my wedding but it definitely won’t be given lightly. It means something and has weight and commitment behind it.

********************************

The theme of purity was so nice. I really enjoyed Doug and Tracy's relationship and wedding. My plan is to save everything till my wedding day too and it is so great to read books that encourage that kind of commitment.

A remarkable companion series to the Christy Miller series. I really enjoyed the characters honesty and depth. Also, some of the characters overlapped from the CM series. Sierra Jensen figures out that Christ's plan for her life is ultimate above any of her own wishes and desires. She learns to be true to herself and not give in to temptations. I really liked this book! (Although you should read Vol 1 first to fully understand and appreciate this story .)
