This review is based on my purchase of the leather-bound edition which is that same in every respect to the paperback edition, save for the ornate trapping that I find to be of high value and great enjoyment in a book. See attached image. The leather-bound hard cover edition is a true collector’s edition. This is a particularly handsome edition with a leather bond and embossed cover, ribbed spine, 22KT gilded gold leaf trim, silk moire endpaper, archival quality paper and a satin ribbon that makes it a worthy display piece.
As an irredeemable bibliophile who is easily entertained by thumbing through dictionaries, I have often found that the illustrations occasionally found in many dictionaries are their most helpful feature. If you are entertained by flipping through dictionaries and encyclopedias, this is the ideal book for you in that every page is illustrated. The color illustrations can also be enjoyed in their own right.
This visual dictionary uses thousands of illustrations to provide visual definitions of words in five languages. Uniquely, the illustrations allow the reader to first see the definition. Though it is not indicated within the dictionary itself, other than in the subtitle, each word is presented in the following order with a superscript indicator for gender in languages other than English (M = Male, F = Female, N = Neuter).
I adore visual dictionaries and this is no exception. However, if you have any other recent Merriam-Webster visual dictionary, expect to see the same pictures.
