This was so exciting! I had a feeling I’d enjoy this and I definitely did. I was completely engaged from start to finish, and was so anxious to find out what happened next that I kept skipping ahead on the page and then having to go back and read it all again.

Libby was really relatable throughout the story and she felt very real. She was appropriately terrified when the pirates attacked, killing her step-father and severely injuring her mother. There were a lot of tears, both of fear and frustration as she struggles to survive the raging waves of the pirate and freighter filled waters of the Red Sea, in to make her way to the safety of the port. It’s a lot to ask of one girl. I wouldn’t have been able to do it.

Diane Tullson did a great job of making all the characters realistic, relatable, and real. Not that I know anything about sailing, but what Libby was capable of seemed realistic for a 14 year old who had been on the boat for several months by the time of this story. Libby’s PTSD was well described, as was her fear, regret and grief. Her mother’s reaction to the pirates was probably what most people not used to being threatened like that would do.

I would have greatly appreciated it if the author had included a map of the area the characters were travelling through, a diagram of a sailing ship, and a list of sailing terms. I looked up a map of the Red Sea and several of the sailing terms used in this, but I couldn’t find a diagram that showed all the parts Libby mentions. I was able to find the major parts, but a picture in the book would have been very helpful for my imagination.

This book really makes you wonder, would a 14 year old you have been able to rise to the challenge?

This book is about a family that gets in a twisted boating experience. There is girl named Libby that is 14 years old and doesn’t listen to anyone doesn't not even her parents. Her step dad Duncan owns a boat that they live on. Libby's parents plan a trip to go sail to Italy. Libby has to turn in her homework before she leaves port. A few hours before they leave they throw a party for all of Libby's friends and the other people that are going on this trip they map out where they are going to sail. When they are mapping out there path out they figure out that they are going through deadly waters that has modern day pirates in the water and there is a big storm heading their way in the deadly waters. Just before they take off on this trip Duncan and Libby go through to see if they have and everything and that everything is in working order. Then they leave everything goes good until they get to the deadly waters. Everyone is asleep except the mother is asleep Libby wakes up in the middle of the night with engine on high.
She wakes up Duncan and he goes to walk up by the mother and they hear shots fired. The mom is launching flares at their boats. Duncan is almost by the mother and they people shoot out the main sail and fire at the mom and hit the mom in her leg. Duncan gets hit in the shoulder when he is in the air and gets blown off the boat. The other boat throws a net in the propeller which makes the engine stop. They get on the boat and one of the guys hit they mother in the head with the butt of their gun. They start to take what they need and start to go for the lower deck go through everything. They. They take all the extra supplies for the boat. Almost take all of the food and water. They start throwing thing out of the bed room and some of the stuff hits Libby. After the trash everything and take all the valuable stuff they threaten Libby and leave them to die.
Libby gets up goes to her mom and drags her down the stairs.
She puts her mom on a bench and looks at her wound. Libby wraps up the wound with a sweat shirt and it starts to storm badly. Rain gets in the lower deck. In the morning Libby takes a bucket and gets as much water out of the lower deck as possible. She cleans the boat and looks for stuff to eat and drink. They left some food and Libby sees the main sail and it is shredded to pieces from the bullet holes. Libby takes down the main sail and looks around for something to fix the sail. Libby remembered the way Duncan showed her to fix the sail if there was a rip in the sail. She goes to check on her mom and her mom had a hot forehead. The next day few day Libby works on the sail and she thinks she fixed the sail. She puts the sail back up and then she goes to check her mother’s wounds and tries to wake her mother to give her a sip of water.
The next day they get some wind and Libby tries to steer the boat. She doesn't know where to go because she can't see any land in site. The next day the main sail falls apart. Then Libby looks and figures out that she can't use the main sail anymore. A few hours later Libby finds a snorkeling mask. Libby use the snorkeling mask and a knife to get whatever is in the propeller out of the propeller. She fixes the engine she sails to land and gets help for her mother. A few weeks later the mom is starting to get healthy and Libby is in school got some money to replace the books that got ripped apart in the attack. A few months later they get their boat back in there water all fixed.

I thought this book was good. I liked it because there was a twisting plot. There was surprises every time you thought it was going to get boring. The worse part about this book is the entry because it takes so long to get into the interesting part. My favorite part about this book is that a girl has to fight to survive attack from pirates. The reason I gave the book three stars because it was an interesting but it got boring sometimes.

The main character in this book is named Libby is the daughter of a divorced family. She lives with her mom and step dad named Duncan. Libby personality in the beginning of the book is a stubborn girl that doesn't listen to her parents and that takes everything for granted except her friends. After the accident she is more aware of what’s going on tries to help save her and her mother’s life. She also takes responsibility and charger when her mother is knocked out. Duncan is a heroic character in this book by trying to stop the pirates and gets shot in the middle of helping the mom try to get rid of the pirates.

I recommend this book for teen’s ages 13 and higher for boys and girls. This book has love between multiple characters. This book has action in the book Duncan the step dad dies. Libby has to fight to save her mother and her own life.

Sometimes parents should really listen to their children. Libby specifically said she didn’t want to go on the sailing trip with them. There is a possibility that if Libby didn’t go on the trip, her parents wouldn’t have been late, and her stepfather wouldn’t be dead and her mom seriously injured. Libby is left alone to guide the boat to shore while trying to aid to her mom at the same time.

This romping book tells the story in first person from the pov of a 14 year old girl. She is a typical snotty teen until pirates attach their boat and her dad and mom are incapacitated. her heroing sea journey takes many days and completely exhaust's her.
Very well written and worth the read

I was looking for an adventure book with the setting in the ocean and I found Diane Tullson's book Red Sea. At the beginning I found it kind of boring because it took place in a dock loading the boat with food, clothes and electronics. The protagonist is Libby, the daughter of a divorced family. She lives with her mom and step dad named Duncan. Libby’s personality in the beginning of the book is a tough girl that doesn't listen to her parents and that takes everything for granted except her friends. One day Libby’s parents decide to go on a yearlong sailing adventure trip with Libby. The plot revolves around a main conflict- going to the Red Sea, which is one of the most dangerous oceans because of piracy. Most people that go to the Red Sea have a problem like getting hold for ransom, getting robed or crashing their boat. When they are mapping out there path out they figure out that they are going through deadly waters that has modern day pirates in the water and there is a big storm heading their way in the deadly waters.
The next day they leave the dock with the boat. After a while everyone goes to sleep except the mother is asleep Libby wakes up in the middle of the night with engine on high. She wakes up Duncan and then goes with her mother when Duncan arrives to the top of deck on the boat they here shots fired. So Libby's mom goes and gets a flare gun and shoots it up in the air. They waited for awhile but no one seemed to be arriving. All of a sudden pirates shot Libby’s mom in the foot They also killed Duncan and threw him over board finally they got on board. The pirates took all of their supplies and left a little bit of food and water, but that's not all they wanted. They start throwing things out of the bed room and some of the things hits Libby. After they trash everything and take all the valuable things they threaten Libby and leave her to die. She finally is able to fix the sail so she puts it away. She goes and checks on her mother and gives her some food.
I recommend this book for teen’s ages 13 and higher for boys and girls. This book has love between multiple characters. This book has action in the book Duncan the step dad dies. It is a really good book for people who like pirates or thing that have to do with survival. Libby has to fight to save her mother and her own life.

I would recommend the book Red Sea by Diane Tullson because it is filled with a lot of suspense. It has many predictions for the reader to discover and find out what will happen next. For example, Duncan says “I don’t expect any problems, but if you see anything and I mean anything come out of the ordinary, you are to come and wake me.” This quote is basically saying if anything goes wrong to go to them and let them know. It is as if something were to happen to them they would tell the person. Something, “Suspenseful” may happen to them. “White heat explodes in my jaw, in my sinus, in my temple, and my knee folds.” This quote shows suspense by how the character feels and the words it uses shows what is going on. It shows suspense when the character says, “White heat Explodes”. The word explodes shows a lot more suspense as if the character is showing that it hurts in side her jaw. Lib cannot move and she doesn’t know how she will get out to help the others. This shows suspense by wondering how she will help the others. “Duncan says, or said, that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” This quote shows suspense by saying what Duncan says or said showing that he died. It gives the story more suspense by saying what “Kills”, you makes you stronger. These words were the last words of Duncan when he had passed. Because Duncan had passed, know one knows what to do without him and they no longer know where to travel or to get help from. From these words that Duncan passed on they may have the courage to be strong.
This book had suspense in different ways and at different times, and it makes the reader wonder what will happen next.

This book kept me reading to the end even through the night. Libby is drafted by her mother in to a sailing adventure through the Red Sea with her stepfather, Duncan, and her mother, Janine. At first we read about a disgruntled teenager, angry about being yanked from her friends and boyfriend to go sailing. She isn't happy about the divorce and really doesn't want to like her mother's choice, a younger man. Duncan trains Libby in many of the sailing skills as she fights being a part of this new family. However, after taking off to catch up with friends in the sailing group, their boat, the Mistaya, is caught in fog and thus a target for pirates. The pirates strip the boat of medical supplies, navigating and electrical equipment, food and shoot Duncan and her mother. Duncan is killed and falls overboard. Libby now has to run the boat, take care of her mother and try to catch up with the group without any help. The props are jammed by a fishing net. Starting with having to swim under the boat and cut the net off, Libby finds a knife from her father behind one of the drawers in her cabin. Her mother, who was shot in the leg, is running a fever and being forced to even drink. The challenges continue as Libby steers the boat toward a place where she can contact others using only the stars and the wind to help her find the way. This survival story is unique as well as enthralling and gut wrenching for the reader.

This book depicts a conflicted family on a year-long sailing trip about to begin a Red Sea passage. The protagonist is a resentful 14 year old girl. Libby would rather be at home with her best friend and boyfriend then on a sailing trip with her mother and stepfather. Libby is defiantly late on a day of departure and the boat of Libby’s family misses disembarking with their flotilla. A horrific situation unfolds when Libby’s family, alone, faces menacing pirates. Libby’s stepfather is killed and her mother is badly injured and unconscious. Nuances of the family dynamic are revealed through Libby’s inner voice as she is forced to call upon her heroic side in a race for survival in a boat without many provisions or a main sail. She must stay awake, sail the boat and care for her mother all whilst facing hard truths about her harsh reality and her contribution to the events that are unfolding. The writing style is clear and honest in this suspenseful and riveting story. This book is highly recommended for any older or mature reader due to violent and sexual content.

Libby (14) is trapped on a sailboat with her mother and stepfather, Duncan and she is not happy. Their yearlong trip has taken her away from her friends, and – more importantly – her boyfriend, Ty, and Libby is in a total snit about it. She’s been angry for the past 5 years, ever since her mother and father got divorced. As they are sailing along the Djibouti coast, they are attacked by pirates – men with masks and guns who kill Duncan, shoot Libby’s mom, and make off with most of the boat’s equipment and supplies. Libby’s mom drifts in and out of feverish consciousness and it falls to Libby to get them to safety. If she can pull herself together, her boating and navigation experience could save them.

Libby is kind of a selfish brat at the beginning of this book. It’s good to see her take command of the situation, though, and come through in the end. Unfortunately, it’s too late to take back her bad behavior, but the way she handles herself and the ship give her the confidence she needs to own up to her mistakes and grow up. Short and suspenseful, this is an exciting survival story.

What I enjoyed a lot about the book is the realism. It looks as if the story really happened. All the problems that appear are common ones between today´s families and the event of being attacked by pirates near the middle east´s conflictive countries is something recent too. Something I did not enjoy that much is that there are chapters that nothing interesting happens. I would recommend this book to people who like action and blood since there is a scene where the pirates attack Lib and her family which is very violent. This makes it more interesting and makes you want to read more. I would also recommend this book to people who do not like long books, this one is short and very interestting. One theme is family and love since Lib did not like her stepfather at all before the trip but then she misses him and realizes how good he was to her. One lesson is that it does not matter how angry or mad you are at your parents you should always do something when they tell you to because they are older and know more. More if you know you are in a situation where danger is always there. If you do not, you might end up as Lib and her loved ones.

The "Red Sea", a 169 page novel by Diane, Tullson takes place at sea with Libby, her mother and step-father, Duncan. Fourteen year old Libby does not want to be at sea as she has friends and a boyfriend back home. The family set out to sea after everyone else did because Libby delayed their journey. One day pirates raided and looted their ship and shot Duncan and Libby's mother. Duncan died immediately and her mother was wounded badly. Libby then step up to get her mother and herself back to safety. I definitely enjoyed reading the eventful book and would recommend it to anybody who is looking for a suspenseful and exciting book. Not only did I feel that it was eventful, I enjoyed seeing the growth in the main character. In my opinion I felt that Libby went from a child to a mature young lady. The one thing that I did not like was that the book was slow to start with and sometimes a bore. However, overall I think it was a good story line and a good book.

I think this book was pretty good. It shows what life would be like if you were on your own in a boat. The one thing that I didn't like in this book is that there is a lot of cursing. I would recommend this book for adults only. The writing is very powerful and entertaining. The book doesn't leave you hanging wondering if the main character, Lib, is going to survive or not. The book is only 169 pages, but it is still a good book overall. It wasn't the best book that I've read, but I still enjoyed reading it.

Red Sea is about Libby, who is going through a crisis when her Mom marries Duncan, another man. To take a break from life, Libby, her Mom, and Duncan go on a sailboat trip to Djbouti. When pirates attack, Libby and her Mother are left stranded on the boat, without a radio, or GPS. What happened to Duncan? Will they ever find land? The Red Sea is about hope, courage, and honesty.

I personally didn't really like the story because the flow of the story was very slow and boring. Additionally, the story itself was very obvious and I thought that it lacked some creativity because it was just another typical survival story with the same idea.
