Boots
Willem's father never approved of his artistic talents, his choices in life, or the fact that he's gay. When the only thing Horst leaves to his son is the family cat, Willem thinks it's his father’s last insult from the grave. That is, until the cat starts talking to him.
Though Willem's lost his boyfriend, his home, and his job, Kasha, who claims to be a magic cat, reassures him that all will be well. All he needs is Willem’s trust and a good pair of boots. But giving boots to a talking cat has unexpected consequences when odd events ambush Willem at every turn, such as the appearance of a handsome stranger in his arms at night.

DNF at 28%
Maybe I would’ve liked this more if I’d read it when I added it to my tbr, back in 2015. Maybe I would’ve liked it better if I knew anything about the fairy tale it’s based on, aside from the fact that a cat wears boots. Maybe I would’ve liked it more if I’d finish—no, there’s no way I could’ve finished this.
The premise was interesting and there might be a good story in the rest of the book I haven’t read, although I doubt it. I was bored out of my mind, despite the cute talking cat, and when I reached the first sex scene, it felt so completely out of nowhere that I knew there was no hope of improvement for me.

Reimagined telling of my favorite childhood fairy tale. I loved Puss N' Boots. I wanted to be him so bad with the boots, the feathered hat, and the sword. I really wanted a sword. Looked so cool. Machetes are cool, but not as elegant as a sword. Plus I had a machete, I didn't have a sword.
Anyway, I digress. Rating might be closer to 3 if I wasn't reminiscing, but it is charmingly funny and romantic with true love triumphing over ... Yeah, if I tell you I'd spoil it. Cute.

Angel Martinez writes retellings of fairy tales exactly how I like them. They lean a little toward the dark side and the romance is hard fought for the MC’s.
The author does more than just retell a tale too. She gives the characters some real depth so the story stands on its own while respectfully paying homage to a classic. While Boots was set in a contemporary timeframe it read timelessly giving it a fantastical quality that is an absolute necessity for a fairy tale. I like to get a little lost in my fairy tales, as in, I don’t want to be stuck in a time period, the magic should be able to translate to any setting and Angel Martinez makes that work in Boots.
So, Willem has had a real string of bad luck and he’s basically come home out of necessity after his father’s death, but he also has his pride so he’s not taking hand-outs from anyone. He and his brothers are close-ish and the bros were periphery characters, but the dynamics they shared explained a lot about Willem and his more solitary nature. Willem inherits the old Tom cat his father owned, Puss, and has plans to leave the kit kat with his brother as Willem is homeless now, but Puss is having none of it and he sets off with Willem as they look for a place to settle.
Well, the settling comes eventually, because Willem is really pretty lost, cold and is just trudging along when Puss speaks up and informs Willem it’s time to get a move on out of the weather and knows a place where they can crash. Of course Willem thinks he’s probably lost his marbles since the cat is talking to him, but they work that out as they are supposed to do because it’s time to move the story along. Willem has lusty dreams about a beautiful man who is with him at night and HEY, guess who that turns out to be??? You get one guess.
Once the stage is set and the two get to know one another, I fell for the story pretty hard. The characters really did it for me in this one and it made me look up more by this author and I queued up Wild Rose, Silent Snow to read right after this one (review soon on the blog for that one too, spoiler alert, LOVED it.) Anywho, Willem is THE MC I like to read about. His basic character is my all-encompassing book boyfriend. Willem is a big, strong dude with rough hands and no clue how appealing he is. He’s also the epitome of a gentleman without even trying, his heart just knows what’s right and his empathy can’t help but rule his actions. He can also be a dirty little minx in the sack and the steamy parts of Boots were so very hot and sweet.
Now Kasha (Puss/Boots) is the perfect, perfect, perfect match for Willem. He’s snarky and strong on the outside, but inside he’s had centuries of loneliness as he serves his series of masters and he’s let his strong will break all the rules and get him in hot water with the Goddesses in charge of all the things. The two of them grow closer and while Willem is a simple man who follows his feels, Kasha has a world of hurt under his belt and he can’t even begin to believe that he could have a forever with Willem. He is convinced that their ending is inevitable so all he wants is to make sure that Willem gets an HEA somehow. Thing is Willem wants an HEA with Kasha but there are all manner of crazy ass battling that has to happen first with nasty ass beings, as is necessary in a quality fairy tale because someone has to be a hero here after all.
The HEA happens and it doesn’t come easy or without sacrifice, but it fit with the story so well and these guys deserved it. Half the pleasure in reading this one was in the dynamics between Willem and Kasha as Kasha adjusted to Willem’s moral nature. It was terribly sweet and also broke my heart as they worked through their moments. Those times were the only glimpses we got into some of Kasha’s painful past and reading Willem’s realizations as he watched Kasha’s reaction to “getting in trouble” killed me to death in the best way. Those were the moments that solidified these two as a forever couple for me.

I’ll be honest. The most I ever knew about Puss n' Boots was the cute Antonio Banderas portrayal in the Shrek movies, so I looked it up and got the gist of the fairytale. This was quite the charming m/m reimagining.
Sweet, down on his luck Willem finds that he’s inherited the family cat from his late father and is quite baffled and a bit miffed that he didn’t get more. Not that much gets him down with his ever optimism and kind heart, but he’s taken aback when said cat starts talking to him and promises to help set some of the things in his life right.
Kasha is not a only a cat but forever serving penance to help those he’s bound to. Sometimes he hates them, most of the time he’s ambivalent. Funny how after all these years he might just actually have strong feelings for his new charge.
Overall a simple story about love and redemption. It doesn’t hurt at all that this was sexy, had a good dose of action, and had a satisfying ending! Again, a very nice retelling of a classic tale.

Willem is at a crossroads. He has lost his job, his cheating lover, his home, and his father. He was left $300 and the family cat, Puss. Refusing to stay with his older brother, he is unsure what to do next.
Puss is really Yorukaze, a kasha, a cat demon. Banished by one of the gods, he is sent from master to master to guide and assist. Unable to return home, he is at the mercy of those who choose to take his service. And he has been led to Willem and his family.
Pasha's job, it seems, it to find Willem a home a job and a man to love. After that, Pasha will have to move on to his next assignment. But what happens if he doesn't want to go? Because Pasha, it seems, can assume a human form, and is the embodiment of what Willem is searching for. When Kasha decides to set Willem up with a nice guy, get him a sponsor for his work, and a home, will he be able to put his feelings for Willem aside?
What follows is a fun, touching and fulfilling fantasy. Willem is a sweet and strong young man, looking for love but getting used and discouraged instead. And Pasha is a smart mouthed, sarcastic bad boy of a demon. But underneath, he is like so many other hard guys - a vulnerable guy who wants someone for his own.
This is a very adult fairy tale. The characters are drawn so well. We feel how lost and sad Willem is, how much losing everything in his life has hurt him. Especially his father; even though they had fought about his being gay, they were reconciling when Horst died. And Pasha - how much loss and pain there has been in his existence. And how much he has sacrificed over the years, and how much he is still willing to give up once he finds the man he has been searching for.
Ms. Martinez has crafted something special here. This tale could be just a sex romp, or a farce. Instead, she has made this a tale of love, sacrifice, tenderness and car. I was enchanted. And isn't that what a fairy tale is supposed to do?

This is really a 4.5 and that's saying something because I generally do not like fairytales. This had it all; humor, sex, plot, more humor, more sex and a walking, talking cat that wears cowboy boots and a cowboy hat..hot damn.
It was short but had no added filler so the story flowed quite smoothly. It held my attention, it was funny in many parts, it was goofy in others with a little angst to break up all the giggling.
Really, if you want a cute read about a magical cat who shifts into a small but hot guy who then has steamy sex with his 6'4" master, owner, partner than this one is for YOU!

I think having one of my cats suddenly begin speaking to me might be either the most terrifying thing in the world or the most fantastic. In my house it would depend on which cat did the talking. *grins* Regardless, I think I could understand Willem's denial when the family cat, Puss, suddenly spoke to him.
Willem is currently homeless and jobless and found his boyfriend in bed with another man, so he is also loveless. His father has just passed away and he left Willem $300 and the family cat. Puss speaks up and explains that he's there to help Willem get his head out of his butt, and to please call him Kasha, because Puss is a ridiculous name. After procuring a pair of children's small, black boots, and a felt Stetson hat, Willem gives them to Kasha as per his request. Amazingly, Kasha fit into the boots and with a little magical touch, he fit the hat on his small cat head. Now it's time for Kasha to begin his work of helping Willem out of his current situation and turning his fate around, most of which is done without Willem's knowledge.

I LOVED this book!!! Boots is a fantastic mixture of the Grimm brothers fairytale, Japanese folklore and a very, very sweet m/m romance. And it was very funny to boot!

Now, that is how you do a fairytale adaptation! Out of the two I have had the pleasure of reviewing by Angel Martinez, I have to say that this is my favorite one by far. Oh, and before you jump to conclusions, it is not because cats are awesome, even though they are…duh. No, it is because the author not only modernizes this fairytale for us, but he puts his own twist to it and adds a bit of Japanese folklore to it as well.
If you are looking for a story that has the following:
1. Humor
2. Magic
3. Some snarkiness
4. Sexy times
5. Self-sacrifice
6. A little deception
7. and a happy ending
Then this book is for you. This story is such a sweet and funny adaptation of Puss in Boots, so yes please keep in mind this is a fairytale people. It is a nice quick read that kept my attention until the end. Oh, and the ending is not something I expected. Yet, another twist by the author in which I say thank you for making the ending more memorable.
Side Note: I really don’t want to say too much and give too much away, because if I do, then why read it especially if you already know the story/premise of Puss in Boots.

I don’t have anything bad to say about this book. It just didn’t have a very strong impact on me.
It’s an inventive re-telling of the fairy tale “Puss in Boots” with an interesting mythical twist to it which was intriguing. Willem’s character was very likable and the perfect match for endearing Puss whose attitude, secrets and struggles added greatly to the story.
My not so enthusiastic rating might stem from the fact that since I’ve first heard the tale I’ve never been partial to the image of a cat in boots or a human-like cat. But that’s just me and totally about personal tastes. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the story and it is definitely one to check out!

Cute and an interesting adaptation of this fairytale. Puss in Boots, not just a cat apparently. Willem's a good soul if a little unlucky in life. He just needs a little help along his path. Enter Kasha, a magic cat, who's one goal is to help Willem get ahead in life. Falling for each other wasn't necessarily on the menu.
I liked Kasha's backstory a lot. It as interesting that he was stuck on Earth doing penance. He was very catlike in his curiosity and secretive nature. The relationship between Kasha and Willem felt a little rushed, but this novella isn't that long and it worked within the confines of the book.
For a short little retelling this worked pretty well.

Willem is gifted a cat after his father dies. Considering Willem is homeless, jobless, and recently found his boyfriend in bed with someone else, he's having a bad time of it! How can having the family cat, Puss, help in any way?!
But Puss is so much more! He is a demon cat banished from his home for multiple wrong-doings. When Puss first talks to Willem, he thinks he's delusional! I think I would too!! But he explains how he is there simply to help him, but he also prefers the name Kasha. Where did they ever come up with a terrible name like Puss he says!! When Kasha requests a pair of boots and a hat from Willem, its now time to help change his terrible situation around!
The first night Willem dreams of a beautiful man lying in his arms. When it happens again on the second night, Willem is frightened at first, but then realizes its actually Kasha in human form. Reread 06/03/2023 I still really liked this story but it is more of a 4 or 4.5 than a straight out 5... I won't adjust my stars though :D

I loved this reimagining of an old fairy-tale! Boots was charming and sweet with just the hint of angst. I loved the humour and silliness of a cat in boots along with the sexiness of his other form. Kasha and Willem were well matched.
I really liked the twist of making this old European tale into a Japanese mythology with Japanese demon cat. It added some exoticism to the story. I loved Kasha and his tale, even though it was a little sad. I am partial to cats and my daughter loves Japanese culture so this book made me smile.
Sometimes shorter novellas try to pack too much in and end up leaving important stuff out. This was not the case with Boots. I found the length to be perfect to tell the tale and I was left wholly satisfied.
I highly recommend picking up this story!

I loved this reimagining of an old fairy-tale! Boots was charming and sweet with just the hint of angst. I loved the humour and silliness of a cat in boots along with the sexiness of his other form. Kasha and Willem were well matched.
I really liked the twist of making this old European tale into a Japanese mythology with Japanese demon cat. It added some exoticism to the story. I loved Kasha and his tale, even though it was a little sad. I am partial to cats and my daughter loves Japanese culture so this book made me smile.
Sometimes shorter novellas try to pack too much in and end up leaving important stuff out. This was not the case with Boots. I found the length to be perfect to tell the tale and I was left wholly satisfied.
I highly recommend picking up this story!

THE GAY EROTIC RETELLING OF Puss in Boots!!! Do I have to say more to convince you???
The plot is so good this book had my attention all the time. Nothing could distract me, from the dearest Willem and his demon kasha fairytale. I love everything, from the kasha smartass comments, to all the magic creatures around them.
So yes, read it if you want a magic story, with an amazing world.
The main characters couldn't be more precious. I can't find words to describe how much I love Willem. The human, fragile and homeless human, that love his demon cat, the powerful kasha. Lovely romance, with perfect main characters.
The references to the Disney character from shrek crack me up. And yes, the kasha will be exactly like him,
(but black with green eyes)
I could even heard Antonio Banderas voice. No kidding, and errrrr, embarrassing but oh hell yeah, I saw all the Shrek movies and love them all

Just when life had already bought Willem low - betrayed by his lover, unemployed and homeless - Willem's father dies, leaving him $300 and a cat. Reeling from the blows that life has dealt him, Willem is sitting on a park bench, all his wordly possessions in a pack by his feet (well the cat is not in the pack, but it is sitting by his feet), when a voice startles him from his introspection. When he realizes that the voice is actually his cat talking, the story reveals itself to be a modern version of Puss in Boots.
Martinez's version of this fairy tale is erotic, charming and touching, highlighted with some sly witty dialogue from the cat. I loved the fragments of Japanese folk tales that Angel inserted seamlessly into the story, as it bought something unexpected as well as adding a new depth. Both Willem and the cat's characters grow with the telling of the story, although in Willem's case, perhaps it was simply that more of his character was revealed.
Like all good fairy tales, there is another message hidden within the story - it is never too late to grow, learn and love.

A modern retelling of "Puss in Boots": Willem is a very kind-hearted man, who just down on his luck after discovering his boyfriend cheated on him, losing his apartment, and having no job. When his father died, all Willem gets is the cat. Lucky for him, Kasha, the cat is not just a cat. He's actually a demon that has been punished and with his power, he will help Willem.
I find this story as cute and endearing. Who knows, Kasha who seems to be so confident in his cat form, is actually a bottom in this relationship, while Willem can show his rather dominant side in bed. Roarr :p.
The only reason that I don't give it a 4-star (my usual rating for great book) is I'm not really sure about the cat-parts during sex in the middle of the book. It's just not my taste, I guess. But it should not be a big problem. It's highly enjoyable story ... entertaining, most definitely.

Boots is a very endearing, imaginative take on the "Puss in Boots" story. I loved how the author worked elements of Japanese mythology into this classic western tale. The characters were great, and their love felt real even with limitied space to develop their romance. I do wish it had been longer, because I wanted to get to know Kasha a bit better and learn more about his history.

The story is cute and cuddly, just like The Puss :)
Unexpected twists and turns kept me reading through the night and into the wee hours. Nice and easy, sticking to the original story in all the important places, but with several surprises of its own, a dash of yaoi - a few very sexy scenes - and the books is a 5 star read :)

This was a...unique read. That sounds bitchy, doesn't it? Well, that's just about all I can come up with.
This story starts at a quick pace and never lets up, which hurts it in the storytelling department. I can barely tell you the actual plot of the story because it ended up getting swallowed by the fact that this is a romance novel about puss in boots turning into a sexy dude and boning a homeless guy. We are half a step away from Chuck Tingle-level meta here.
There were a lot of little things that I just couldn't buy in the story. First of all, I love shifter stories of all kinds, but I also like when shifters stick to either animal or human form and never the twain shall meet. I found the idea of Kasha "talking" in his cat form so absurd, I almost laughed while reading it. Was his little kitty mouth moving with the words, or was there some kind of telepathic bond? I have no clue, but either way, it was just too awkward. And him wearing the boots was absurd, too, but just in the way it happened--why couldn't he have asked for two pairs of boots for all four kitty paws so he wouldn't be walking around like a goober? Why must I ask myself these questions after reading a supposed romance novel?
Was this all bad? No, definitely not. I actually really liked the three witches subplot...it felt very true to a modern-day fairy tale retelling. Too bad they didn't actually have much to do with the story. And though I don't find the Puss in Boots tale to be very compelling to begin with, I do like how some of the base elements of the story translate to modern times.
Matthew picked this one for me for the May Pick It For Me Challenge at the LGBTQIA Fantasy Fiction, and while I thank him for the (definitely challenging) pick, this one just didn't do much for me.

Unique and Enchanting!
Fairy tale adaptations have been popular since the beginning of fairy tales. Angel Martinez manages to create a unique blend of Japanese folklore and classic Western European fairy tale with her take on the story of "Puss in Boots." I couldn't anticipate the story arc while reading; I loved the ending so much I almost cried.
Willem is the youngest of three brothers in a family whose father made his money as a beer brewer. He winds up inheriting "Puss" the family cat rather than anything else from his father's legacy as his oldest brother inherited the family business and his middle brother gained his father's vehicle -which made sense as he no longer has a driver's license- and there's a moment of shame, sadness, and sorrow at the thought his father didn't love him as much as his brothers yet his good nature turns it around as he realizes the old tomcat wants to go with him wherever he's taking himself after his father's estate has been handled. It's easy to immediately fall in love with Puss who is exactly the right blend of cat and man.
Kasha, as the cat demon asks to be called, is a servant of Amaterasu who is banished to live among humans for failing in his duties three times. He's devious in a way I associate with felines while being affectionate in a way I think we all wish our cat companions were all the time. His devotion to doing right by Willem is admirable and I gotta admit reading about him going up against an ogre alone? I was terrified for him.
For those worried about unhappy endings, this one does have a happy ever after, but it comes at a price the way fairy tales all did in the past. I love the epilogue which reassured me things worked out well for these characters. I sincerely hope people decide to give this one a shot if they're interested in a new take on an underused story. Boots is a fantastic read filled with fun and a little bit of filth to keep it interesting for the adult reader.

Willem loses his job, lover and apartment in quick succession, so imagine his disappointment when the only thing his father leaves him in his will is the old brewery cat. But this particular cat can talk, and soon Willem finds that his fortunes will change forever.
Boots is a retelling of the old puss in boots fairytale, and, let me just say, it is one of the most adorable books I've ever read! <3
It is a very character driven story, as Willem and Puss/Kasha tread along the well-known plot of the fairytale (with a twist :)). I felt very close to their characters, especially Kasha. Kasha is a, well, kasha. He has been banished to earth in order to help humans. He enters their service when they give him boots, and then is relieved from service once they take the boots away. Most of the time he's in the form of a cat, but he can turn into a human too (oddly, with penile spines and a rough tongue - sort of a leftover from being a cat, haha). He's quite sarcastic and quick-witted, but there is a much more vulnerable and heartbroken side to him that makes you just want to scoop him up and protect him (and I'm allergic to cats!). Willem on the other hand, is tall, strong and dependable, though he really does have a rather impressive temper. However, despite this temper, Willem is gentle and protective and I love him and Pasha together.
With any other book, I'd get annoyed at the all-too-perfect and convenient ending, but, as it's based on a fairytale, I don't mind over much. It suits the fairytale feel of the story. :) If you don't like happily ever afters, however, Boots has one, so be warned!

Boots isn't really that long - it's about a hundred or so pages - but I think that this is just about the right length. Any more, and Kasha and Willem's story would have been stretched out too far, which would have been detrimental to the story as a whole.

I also love the fact that his initials were I M Ogre (esq.). Little things like that just add a whole new level to the book. I also loved the interactions between Willem and Kasha - they were filled with wit and humour as well, and I found myself laughing and quoting bits to my (long suffering) fiancee (even though she's already read the book). :)
And, of course, it wouldn't be a review of erotica if I didn't mention the sex scenes. I found myself much more interested and invested in the sex scenes that I usually get, and they were both kinky and steamy to boot. I'm not sure if it was Willem's commanding bedroom presence, Kasha's adorableness or something else entirely, but I loved them.I even found myself admiring the metaphors that ran through the sex scenes, especially the one based on a storm. I'm a strange person admiring language in a sex scene, I know. Dont' judge me, hahaha.

The author took the familiar European literary fairytale and gave it an interesting exotic twist by adding in elements of Japanese mythology. This was brilliantly done; the different lores fit seamlessly together, making a fresh and original fantasy tale. Puss, the cat, is really a kasha, a Japanese cat demon, banished from the realms of the Gods by Amaterasu, the Sun Goddess, for defying her. Now Kasha has to live among humans, only getting to use his magic when someone claims him by giving him shoes. This has happened frequently over the centuries. Sometimes Kasha was sent by higher forces to fulfill a task, and sometimes a magically gifted human figured him out and claimed him on his own. Some of them forced Kasha to do cruel things, some used him as a sex toy – in his human form – but all of Kasha’s human masters only regarded him as a tool, something they abandoned after they’d reached their selfish goals.
Willem is different. For one, he is totally, inanely good, so good it borders on naive. He lets his cheating boyfriend keep their apartment and furniture, and when said boyfriend calls for his help, Willem hurries at his side, and forgives him. And then, Willem has no idea what Kasha is. Sure, he finds out soon enough that there’s a lot more to the old Puss than he’d thought, but he merely goes with the flow when his cat suddenly starts to speak and demands Willem buy him boots. Willem is a bit of a drifter, a dreamer, something that fits his artist’s soul very well. He’s a gifted sculptor who can make art out of everything at hand, even an old tuna can. Witnessing this, and learning that it’s the desire of Willem’s heart to study art, Kasha has his task laid out for him, and goes about it with determination. It’s his duty as a claimed Kasha, but he has also taken to Willem, more than to any of his other masters before. Willem won’t use him, but instead treats him with respect and takes care of him. During their lovemaking, Willem doesn’t show disgust since parts of Kasha remain feline, but simply accepts him as he is, down to his habit to keep the boots on even in bed. Soon, duty turns into devotion for Kasha, to a point where he’d willingly sacrifice everything for his master’s happiness – even his own heart, and even his life.
This was a really enjoyable reading experience. I liked the way this story was playfully peppered with clichés and allusions, from the seme/uke theme to the clueless fairytale princess (which, in this case, is a prince), from the German-sounding names to the magic number three to the dual nature of Japanese deities and so on. And on top of being a skillfully spun- out fantasy, this was a romantic, and highly erotic, lovestory. It was funny, heartbreaking, wise, sweet, and yes, magic too. Of course, the magic came handy to solve our heroes’s biggest problem, but even this was done in a way that fit the logic of the story. My only niggle was a, to me, overly sweet ending, but I can see others loving this book all the more just for that. I can warmly recommend this entertaining read.
