Story: ** This, as evidenced by the cover, is a book about the rat who obnoxiously dominates the book. Gregory only appears in few panels here->and->there doing zany things as usual like having intense conniptions and urinating down the drain... onto the rat.
There is much about afterlife in here with a crotchety elder "God" (NOT Santa, that is) appearing more than Gregory. The rat is faced with reincarnation options and regrets while having to take inventory of himself. It's decent reading but I like the real main character of the series much more because the rat is often annoying.
Art: ** He's not such a good artist but it works well with the story. It's kind of a * though but he gets the extra star because he makes the most of it.
I thought so little of this series continuing when it happened, I only bought this second Gregory book second-hand. Now, 20 years later, it's probably telling that I actually like this Herman-centric volume better than the first. Just as the title suggests, this is all about Herman Vermin, with very little of Gregory about it. Herman is the same irascible rat as before, even through his inevitable spiritual journey and visitation with God himself (or is it Santa? Burl Ives?), as well as his only different incarnation. If you like his personality (and all the accompanying dumb jokes), this is a fun book, and more of a showcase for Hempel's art than the first book was. If, however, you just want more 'Ub! Zub! AAAAAA!' then just read the first book again.
