A decent, in-depth look at Simpsons merchandise - full-colour, packed with pictures, and with extensive text - that was perhaps just one editing pass short of being definitive.
Guides to the toys, soundtracks and comics are well-balanced, but VHS tapes get incredibly short shrift (two pages total) compared to video games (which get two pages apiece, minimum; over 50 in total). A couple of errors (one boxout attributes an episode to both the wrong year and the wrong season, a VHS tape is cited as being released in the wrong year) detract marginally, too.
But overall, still highly recommended for fans of the show - I've written for a Simpsons website for twenty years, and there's still some stuff in here I hadn't seen before; and the text helps place a lot of the material into a broader cultural context.
This book is for anyone who loves, collects, or is a fan of the Simpsons. The authors of this book you can tell have a huge appreciation for the Simpsons. I have been a fan since the early days of the show, and when I found out about this I pre ordered it right away. I received my copy today WOW the quality is amazing. The level of detail is great. I will enjoy this for a long time. I did not realize how much collectables were out there for the simpsons.
I grew up with the Simpsons, and I'd say 90% of my sense of humor cones from the show, not even including my insistence that there really is a Simpsons quote for everything. (Neatly dying of a vitamin B deficiency was a twofer: "bed goes up, bed goes down" and Professor Frink's lifetime supply of "niacin, thiamine, and riboflavin.")
This, then, is a book dreams are made of. It chronicles the Simpsons' breadth and reach for the casual and hardcore fans alike and how it burrowed into our lives, from cataloging every video game to featuring the fast food toys that were the highlight of my childhood. Simpsons fanatic that I am, even I learned a bunch of fascinating trivia, and I'm all the more embiggened by it.
In short? This book belongs in every Simpsons fan's collection.
There are few media properties as merchandise friendly as The Simpsons (only things that come close are probably Star Wars and superheroes), so it’s only natural that you can fill an entire book with not only loads of Simpsons toys, t-shirts, VHS/DVDs, comic books and video games, but details about how they all came to be.
Even if you’re not the collecting type, I still think if you’re into the show at all, it’s very easy to get into this book and see just how many outlets beyond TV The Simpsons have gotten involved in throughout the decades.
Thank you for capturing the warm fuzzy feelings of nostalgia in ways I didn't know existed. I wanted this book purely because I remember watching the first 10 seasons of the simpsons religiously on DVD from the cardboard box sets from my older brother and my love for the show has never dimmed. It makes me so happy to see the plethora of ways that people love the show that are all their own and all just as wonderful. This book is simpsons sonder
