In this short story anthology, editor Kyell Gold challenged nine other adult Furry writers to choose one of the Ten Commandments and have their way with it...so to speak. Kyell himself took whatever was left over and the result is ten finely crafted stories which are definitely not your grandmother's Ten Commandments.
Includes stories by Alex Vance, Renee Carter Hall, Whyte Yote, Kyell Gold, pyrostinger, Fuzzwolf, Jonas, Not Tube, K. M. Hirosaki, and B. C. Currier.
While the subject matter is clearly not something you will find in Sunday School, it was ultimately surprising how many of the stories ended up re-affirming the intent of the original Commandment in the end. So, you still get your moral fiber — you just get there by a different...sometimes stickier...road is all.
With solid writing and outstanding illustrations, this is an outstanding anthology.
Hi there! I am a writer of gay furry fiction--but you probably know that if you've seen my book listing here. I live in California with my husband Kit, and when I'm not writing, we like to go out to eat and watch movies. We travel a lot, too, mostly around the West Coast, but occasionally to the midwest and east.
I blog at http://www.kyellgold.com/wpblog about upcoming travel plans, upcoming books and news, general writing principles, gay rights, and whatever else seems interesting. And I co-host a podcast, called "Unsheathed," where we talk about the craft of writing and the furry fandom, sometimes at the same time.
If you have a question about any of the books, check the FAQ on my website and then ask away! :)
X is a collection of furry erotic short stories, one for each of the Ten Commandments. The authors vary widely across the fandom but attract several of the better-known names in the community. Kyell Gold serves as editor, as well as author of one of the entries.
As expected, Renee Carter-Hall's submission for "Thou Shalt Worship No Graven Idol" is the runaway star of the book. Her descriptions are stunning and her imagery laden with depth. One feels the oppressive heat of the jungle as the main characters search the ruins of an ancestral temple, the tension as they uncover sacred artifacts within, and the rising urgency as those treasures reveal their secrets. Her sex scenes are engrossing, and their necessity as part of the narrative makes them that much more visceral. This one short alone is worth the cover price.
Unfortunately, by comparison, the rest of the book feels almost manufactured. Each of the shorts is, taken individually, an acceptable work, not brilliant but eminently publishable. As a matter of comparison, I can remember the general plot points of the others, but fine detail is lost to me. None of the sex scenes are particularly vivid, though at none of them did laugh or groan.
Most of the sex scenes are M/M, which I doubt is a problem for anyone I know, but I find it academically interesting. In a fandom that self-reports roughly equal percentages of gays, straights, and bisexuals, the majority of the books--or at least the majority of the authors--contain mostly gay male content.
If you're a fan of short-story collections and you're willing to buy a decent album for one really awesome track, then this is worth a look.
this rating is pretty much entirely for fuzzwolf's contribution, which remains one of my favorite short stories of all time; i literally called my boyfriend at 4 a.m. in fits of tears because of it.
