almost at random-

"this ward was one of 8 visiting wards open from 1o in the morning until 5 at night to any and every body who felt disposed to lounge through them, staring at the helpless inmates and disappointed if they were not treated to some crazy manifestation over which they could laugh for days after."

visiting hours werent for friends and family. that would just excite the mad molecules already so abundant in the brains of lunatics. best not to let them see anyone in the world who might care about them and instead sell tickets to anyone wanting a freak show .

Agnew's account of her time being institutionalized is surprisingly humorous at moments, but keeps a clear direction and purpose for telling her story, presenting every other patient and every worker at the institution as multifaceted and whole people, despite any abuses suffered.

If you are interested in a personal account of their time in a mental institution I highly recommend this.
