Red Mojo Mama

Rate this book
Lydia “Red” Talbot has lost her mojo after three years of mourning for her husband, but not for long. She’s inherited a valuable mobile home park in the Gold Country of California, filled with a cast of eccentric characters. Her plans to sell it and take a world cruise are threatened by a hot handyman, a sizzling story in the rapidly growing town of Nuggetville and the appearance of her husband’s ghost, who has decided to hang around awhile as he searches for his next life. Boredom sets in as she waits for her fortune to materialize, so she takes a part-time job as a reporter. Fancying herself the community newspaper equivalent of Christiane Amanpour, Lydia uncovers some shady doings by the City Council and a slick land developer. Citizens are bullied and her life is threatened, as she struggles to both expose the crooks and stay emotionally independent of the community of crazies she has been left by her beloved Aunt Esther. Red is a spunky, smart-alecky thirty-something with more heart than she’d like others to see. She’s absolutely fearless and too honest for her own good sometimes. She’s also torn between love for her dead husband, Mac, and the new man in her life, Joe - handyman and chef.

This is a strange review for me. I did not really enjoy reading Red Mojo Mam while I was engrossed in the middle of it, but after I finished it, the more I thought about it, the more I came to like it.

Kathy Lynn Hall has a gift for bringing characters to life. I could actually hear some of their voices as I read the dialogue (yes, my medications are up to date!), and I swear I've seen some of the residents of the trailer park before. Hall knows how to capture real people's dialogue without seeming condescending.

The main character, Red, is appealing on many levels. Another gift Hall shows is an ability to handle a steamy sex scene. (Excuse me while I have a drink of water.)

What didn't I like? Well, Red is a little too strong, sometimes. Much of it is bravado, which is completely believable. But things fall into place for her a little too well. While I like mysteries that answer all the questions, I generally don't like stories that tie up too neatly at the end. Life, as I have found it, is messy.

Not that Hall's characters' lives are neat and ordered - far from it! And now that I think about it, Hall did expound on her main character's inner turmoil. I just think that she should have thought more about it. Without giving too much away for you readers, I guess I would have preferred that Red make a different decision at the end.

But that's saying too much. I cannot fault Hall for not writing the story the way I would have. And she didn't write it for me, either. I get the feeling this book is written for a female audience. Men, there's a lot for us to take from this, some real insight into that most baffling of questions, "how do women think?" And yes, that shower scene.

Congrats, Kathy Lynn Hall, you've changed my mind. No, I am not stubborn. Am not!

All I can say at first after reading this book is…WOW!! This book had a little of everything to satisfy ANY reader in my opinion. It had action, romance, great plot, great and very likable characters, and content that made you really think about some things in your own life. When I finished this book I found myself just sitting and thinking about a wonderful quote used more than once in this book…“everything comes full circle…eventually”. I loved ALL the characters from The Springs trailer park community. All were made out to be such realistic characters that it made me feel like I was really living the book! The more I read, the more “into” the book I seemed to become. I truly felt like I was in the book and really experiencing the whole thing from inside. I found myself looking up from the book actually feeling surprised that I was in my own living room and not in whatever setting I had just read about. I must say, not many books can do that for me, but this one sure did. I found myself laughing out loud, smiling, worrying, feeling angry, and even tearing up while I read this book.

Red (Lydia) had inherited a trailer park and trailer home from a very close aunt who has died. Her first thought was to just go and live there until she could get it sold and then go to live out her dreams of going a world cruise with the money it would sell for. Red has had a great loss of, not only her aunt dying, but three years earlier her husband dying. She misses him a lot, but once she is moved into her aunts home she is surprised to learn that Mac (Red’s late husband) is there, as a ghost to help her through this move and much more. The people living in the trailer park that Red inherits are truly amazing and are simply works of art. Red soon discovers that she wants a job (other than running the park), not because she needs money (as her aunt left her a wonderful nest egg), but because she wants something to do that makes her feel productive. She soon gets a job as a reporter for a small town’s newspaper that is printed once a week. From this job she learns many things about the town and about her aunt. Nothing seems to be what it looks like on the surface. This “perfect” little town has some “perfectly juicy” little secrets that are not meant to be found out, by her OR the townspeople. All through this book Red learns to trust, love, and protect the new people she has come to live with in her trailer park. Questions are…can she do what is right by the townspeople and still be liked by them? And can she ever truly move on from her dead husband to pursue a new relationship again? And what exactly IS this big secret the town chair people have kept from the townspeople?

Well, to answer those questions and find out a LOT more about Red and the circumstances surrounding her new life and find out more about the wonderful characters that steal away your heart you MUST read this book! 5 out of 5 stars FOR SURE!!!!

Delightful and Fun!

I just loved this delightful and fun novel. It was really very entertaining.

Lydia Talbot inherits her aunt’s mobile home park, located in a little town in Nuggetville, California. The residents are friendly and colorful. After Lydia meets them all, she begins to think twice about selling the park. She becomes very interested in these people, the town politics and she even acquires an admirer, Joe.

I could just picture Lydia driving Lucy, her 1963 convertible VW bug—in her signature cherry red color, with her red hair waving in the wind and a smile on her face.

Very cute how, on occasion, her deceased husband, Mac, would appear as a ghost and attempt to nudge her in the right direction; towards her admirer, Joe.

Lydia would like nothing more than to fall in love again and make the criminals pay for what they had done.

I look forward to reading Tell Them You’re Fabulous by Kathy. She is a very talented author and I highly recommend you read this fun, delightful, adventurous novel.

It's Red herself who really makes Red Mojo Mama an entertaining read. Smart; courageous; impetuous; big-hearted, yet plagued with self-doubt; sentimental, yet hot-tempered; wanting to be loved, yet scared to make the jump -- Kathy has gifted Red with a full, fine range of emotions and conflicts. That makes Red Mojo Mama something special, imho.

Red Mojo Mama is a lively character-driven romance, fanciful and romantic in some ways, down to earth in others, with touches of risk and danger. Filled with true-to-life characters and observations on human nature, Red Mojo Mama illustrates with moxie and panache the off-hand comment of ghost-husband Mac -- that heaven is all around; you just have to see it.

I adore Red! Imagine a deeper, more mature version of spunky Stephanie Plum and you have Lydia “Red” Talbot. Hall captures her fun, vivacious voice perfectly, developing her with care and warmth, along with her other wonderful characters who understand what it means to be neighborly. I found myself more than once thinking, “I could live at The Spring,” the mobile home park Red inherits from her aunt. It was a pleasure reading about individuals who show kindness to their fellow human beings and are just who they appear to be: good people. I recommend this delightful story to an adult audience and look forward to reading other Kathy Lynn Hall novels.

Lydia (AKA Red) loses her husband unexpectedly and with it her Mojo. This story is how she recovers from loss with the help of the ghost of her dead husband and the menagerie living at the Trailer Park she has recently inherited from he favorite aunt (the other redhead who she used as a life role model). I found the visual aspects of the characters especially involving. A good story with believable nuances in the life of Red, Mac, Joe and aunt Esther as well as the collection of loveable tenants. An enjoying romp through the emotional traps of moving ahead in your life and involving yourself with others.

The book was GREAT! Hooked me right at the start. Well developed characters and a story that included a little romance, mystery and travel. Definitely interested in following Red,the mournful heroine that is looking for her mojo. All of the characters are portrayed in a realistic manner, even recognized a few from my travels! Keep them coming Ms. Hall!!

Great story filled with romance and intrigue. There was definite sadness in Red, but I think she found where she was meant to be and it ended on just the right note! I can't wait for the next one to come out, I always love a story about a strong woman.

Interesting book! Lydia’s aunt passes away and leaves her a mobile home park as her inheritance with the hope that Lydia will love the town and the people as much as she does. Lydia has already lost her husband and needs the distraction. She really did not love the town nor the people to begin with, but she did eventually. She found a new love and lots of new friends. She exposed the city council and a developer for the crooks that they really were and became a beloved member of the community. Look forward to seeing what she does next.

3.5 stars!

Lovely, lovely read! Gosh, Twitter (really the people who make it thrive) has been throwing book titles at me like it’s nobody’s business. I want to read everyone’s book, yet it’s just impossible. So the books that do catch my eye more than once, leave me no choice but to read them. Well most, not all. But this isn’t the place to get into that and I really don’t want to digress from this book.

Lydia Talbot or Red is a widow. Not only has she lost Mac but along with him – her mojo. Her beloved aunt Esther has passed away too leaving her with an inheritance in the form of a trailer park in Nuggetville. Her plan is to sell the trailer park, make more than a tidy sum of money in turn allowing her to go on a world cruise. That is, until she meets Joe Wright (or Mr. Right!). He’s a chef, looks after his father (who is really more than capable of looking after himself but such is a son’s duty) as well as being Esther’s handyman. Joe is hot and really, after three years of mourning for Mac, dormant feelings start to emerge once again. Mac makes an appearance throughout the book, in ghost form of course, offering advice and helping Red find her way forward. It’s time to move on and she really needs to get her mojo back. Lydia, out of sheer boredom, decides to apply for a position at the local newspaper. Of course, she is handed all the menial daily life coverages, but what she really wants to do or rather who she would really love to be, is Christiane Amanpour! Lydia uncovers some suspicious and underhanded dealings which incorporate the town mayor and politicians to boot. There are always those who think nothing of stomping on whoever stands in their way and thrive on lining their already bulging pockets. Red has hit on something that adds the element of suspense to the story.

This was an extremely fun read and right from the beginning, I was in tears. Gosh, I truly am soppy. Every single character is entertaining and I couldn’t help but adore one or two in particular. The story itself comes across as real including everything else that happens within it. I never found myself bored at any point in the story and it was one that brightened not only my face but my day. I wish I could spend a week at this trailer park; I really do, because although there are one or two ‘rigid’ people who reside in it, the rest are just pure fun and obviously a joy to be around. I would especially love to be at their next Luau! I still have one particular character in mind – wearing her grass skirt! I enjoy when a character starts off encased in a particular mold and then throughout the story you see them changing, becoming someone you just can’t help but like. It’s exactly how it is in real life though isn’t it? You meet someone and they tend to come across as, well, tough as nails or like a strong wind couldn’t possibly budge them, yet they are the ones that surprise us the most.

The only thing that I would critique in this book was the editing and formatting, but I have it on good authority from Kathy Lynn Hall herself, that it is being re-edited and should be ready soon. Now, here is what I found interesting. Lately, almost every book I have picked up is riddled with errors and formatting issues etc. - unfortunately I gave up on them. However, with Red Mojo Mama, I loved the story right from the beginning, so much so that this was one book that the thought of putting it aside, never crossed my mind. It really is an entertaining and fun read. Kathy Lynn Hall knows how to tell a story. Despite the ‘issues’, should you be in need of a light read - suspense included, where you can kick back, relax and simply enjoy, this one was just that.

It would be a shame if anyone looked at this book and placed it in the same category chick lit / action adventure as Janet Evanovitch or Lauren Henderson. Yes it has similarities but there are some very important points of difference and stand out moments that make this book so much more than just another genre filler. If you pass it up because of preconceptions you will miss a treat!

Red is grieving for her husband. And here is the first point of difference, she is allowed to have negative emotions without being too dramatic, and without all of a sudden getting back to real life the next day. In other words the grief and associated emotions are realistic. You can relate to them. And the grief continues even as she rebuilds her life. There is an unspoken acknowledgement that yes life may move on and so may you, but somewhere there is always a piece that was lost. The narrative in this book is allowed to develop at a comfortable pace. Things happen, events unfold, new people are met. but there is no hurry about it which makes this a beautiful relaxed read (in other words I was comfortable with the pace). Such a nice change from the usual state of affairs where (often because the main characters have run out of growth or depth) the author feels the need to throw one thing after another at the reader. Life proceeds at much the same pace as is portrayed in this book. Again this draws you in and engages the reader. In addition Red has real responses to the other characters she meets. She judges by first impressions or looks, only to have her point of view swayed as she becomes involved with the other person. I challenge any woman not to have done the same. Also if Red gets hurt (physically) she is allowed proper time to recover! Unlike some books she does not turn up to work the next day after a serious accident with just a band aid and a few aches, raring to go. Red is scared of her emotions at times. Hooray! If you have ever been hurt or burned by a man / woman you will know that it ain't all that easy just to pick yourself up and trust the next person that comes along unreservedly. And she is pleasant and warm hearted, and the depiction feels genuine, not just a characteristic that the author thinks a woman heroine should be given! Red sometimes enjoys real pleasures. Good (but simple) food, a drink, a good book, even a shower. I could relate to all of that.

The plot of this book was also believable, involving small town politics. Benn there, seen it. It actually happens. How many of us always run across crazed serial killers, or batty old people, or get blown up regularly? This is a plot you can engage with as a real person. And (trying not to give the game away) even the slightly paranormal incidents feel realistic. They are not written as prescriptive, but rather you can bring your own interpretation to them.

Kathy Lynn Hall's inaugural novel is fun, fun, fun! Lydia "Red" Talbott is so full of life that she almost jumps off the page and invites the reader to the next Luau at her Trailer Park. You'd probably accept too because Joe and Bob and Evelyn and Millie and Donny and Jimmy and Judy seem like folks you've known all your life -- and who doesn't like a good pool party?

Then there's Mac who is Lydia's deceased husband. He pops up from time to time to warm her heart and offer support. Funny thing is, even though "Red Mojo Mama" doesn't SEEM like a ghost story, Mac adds a clever little dimension to the yarn that kept me chuckling while putting a face on something we all feel from time to time -- longing.

Of course, you can't have a gang of good guys without a bunch of evil-doers and Nuggetville has more than its share of shady characters, corrupt politicians, and ne're do wells. There's even a slutty middle-aged reporter slithering around the edges of the plot. That way, while Red is getting to know her way around town, she can solve a mystery or two and earn her wings as resident good ole gal. Who doesn't love it when the city buzzards get their come uppances and the good-neighbor types get justice?

And romance -- a jolly good read needs romance and even with a ghostly husband hanging around, Lydia manages to hook up with the hunk of the town and generate a little heat appropriate for a woman nicknamed "Red."

And a puppy! I ask you, how can you resist a book that ends with a puppy named Mac?

The best thing about "Red Mojo Mama" is that it does what the author sets out to do -- entertain the masses. Ms. Hall doesn't take herself or her tale too seriously. She creates homey peeps living in a homey town and let's them dance on your kindle screen. It's kinda like reality-TV gone country -- one more guilty-pleasure to hide under the couch when company comes.

I'm just getting into it and its funny, sexy and smart. Will post more as I get into it...took a while for me to get back to this one. June has been a busy month. But here's the review from "Cindy's Indies" on my website www.cynthiaharrison.com:

It’s interesting that Kathy Lynn Hall name checks Janet Evanovich twice in her novel Red Mojo Mama because their voices have the same casual, cosy, comic vibe. Plotwise, there are big differences. Hall, as an indie writer, does not have to adhere to any kind of genre restrictions (I’m sure Evanovich calls her own shots too these days) so she is all over the place: romance, mystery, domestic drama, and even a dash of fantasy spiritualism.

I liked it! She kept me engaged with her many layers of story. Red, the main character, is a hoot and a half. She’s widowed and sad, but still manages the odd wisecrack. Then there’s Mac, the ghost of her dead husband, who follows her to a tiny town in northern California and the trailer park she inherited from an aunt who died under somewhat mysterious circumstances. There Red meets her neighbors, a congenial bunch, especially one special guy she can’t help being attracted to despite her still unresolved feelings for Mac.

The mystery angle concerns corruption at the top. Certain of the town’s wealthy citizens are turning a charming old gold rush town into yet another playground for the wealthy. And they don’t mind playing dirty to get what they want. Shady dealings aside, would they resort to murder? Red lands a job as a reporter, a good reason to stick her nose in at town counsel meetings.

What happens as a result of her inquiring mind? Will Red be able to help the townsfolk who’ve been duped? Will she find out if her aunt was murdered? Will she take the millions offered for her trailer park or stay put in this new-found happy place? Hall has a hell of a good time answering these burning questions, and readers will too.

I found Red Mojo Mama to be about as addictive as my favourite chocolate and it was a wrench every time I had to put it down. With her novel, Kathy Lynn Hall has created the perfect world with the perfective cast of characters. I found myself actually longing to be a member of the community at The Springs Mobile Home Park and, by the end, I felt bereft, as though being parted from old friends. The main character is Red a feisty redhead, who is just glorious as she shakes up the small town of Nuggetville, where she has recently relocated. Her love interest is Joe and he is almost as fabulous as Red. Somehow in Joe, Hall has taken the ordinary and made it extraordinary. Joe is no action hero, he is a kind man, caring for his elderly father and working in an old folk's home and yet by the end of the book he was the man of both Red's and my dreams. Red Mojo Mama is great fun and there were times it made me laugh out loud but, it also has its fair share of tension, as Red falls foul of a group of corrupt councilmen. What did surprise me, was how in the midst of all the fun and laughter, I found myself moved as Red struggles to deal with the loss of her beloved husband, Mac. I think Hall deals with bereavement honestly and realistically. Most stories, for the sake of the plot, gloss over grief but in Red Mojo Mama, Hall acknowledges that it's a lifelong process. After three years, even as she finds herself falling in love with Joe, Red is still dealing with the aftermath of losing Mac. I really loved this book and read it in three stittings. Had I not had to work, I would have probably done it in one!

Red Mojo Mama by Kathy Lynn Hall is one of the best books I’ve read in a while.

Red Mojo Mama is the kind of book you can sit down with and just enjoy a very good story.

Lydia (Red) is still suffering from the sudden death of her husband three years before and she needs a change in her life. She’s lost her mojo.

She gets it when her Aunt Esther dies and leaves her a trailer park just outside of Nuggetville California. Along with the park she also gets all the characters that live there. It’s just what she needs.

There is possible love and lots of humor in this great story. Joe Wright is not your average guy and he sets his sights on Red and Lydia responses.

Red also takes a job as a reporter for the Nuggetville Courier and weaves her way into a suspenseful town conspiracy.

I would highly recommend Red Mojo Mama to anyone who loves a good book!

Kathy Lynn Hall writes a great story that is well edited and has perfect flow. Some of the best dialog I’ve read in a long time.

I look forward to reading other works by Kathy Lynn Hall

I definitely love Red Oooh.. I suddenly miss my red hair!

Lydia “Red” Talbot got spunk… she’s sassy, fierce, dedicated and intuitive. I have learned to love her mobile home as time progressed, especially after I got to meet Joe the Chef.

Red may have mourned three long years after her husband’s death, but boy, what a reprieve it was when Joe came along. Sure, Mac (the dead hubby) made his appearances (as a ghost), but Red soon moved on.

Having Joe on her side, she discovered what life has to offer in The Spring, where she inherited a mobile home from her aunt. The place crawled with interesting characters and places you would love to hang out on.

I applaud Ms. Kathy Lynn Hall for a superb book. I am always pleased after reading a well-written story. Sure, I knew beforehand that someone from the higher ranks in the City Council had something to do with her aunt’s death, but still, the mystery kept me hooked. I will definitely read the next in the Red Talbot series.

My rating for Red Mojo Mama: 4 stars!

Whenever I lose my way in life, I sing, "There's still time to change the road you're on." (Led Zeppelin, you've gotten me through some tough times with that simple line.)

Like Led, Ms. Hall reminds us that life can start again at any age, at any time.

For Lydia Talbot aka Red, the latter happens when she least expects it. Already the widow of one of the few "good men," she is devastated by the loss of her Aunt Esther. As the beneficiary of Esther’s trailer park, she now has to pack up and take care of some unfinished business. Boy, does Red take care of business…

With the help of her husband’s ghost, a new love interest, and a motley crew of new friends, courageous Red rocks Nuggetville harder than the Gold Rush!

If you’re craving a feel-good book that will make you laugh (this book will give you abs!), root for the home team, and get your mojo back, Red Mojo Mama is it. Be inspired to start over.

I can’t wait for part two.

This book was an absolute blast to read! RED MOJO MAMA is filled with great characters, intense (and realistic) emotion, a compelling mystery that's far too close to reality, and a few steamy bedroom scenes. Hard to put down!

I fell in love with the spunky Red (Lydia), who's grieving for her husband but plucks up the courage to move out west and consider life as the owner of the trailer park her Aunt has left her. Although she plans to sell the park, as the story unwinds Red finds herself growing attached to the park's quirky residents (the hunky handyman Joe, in particular), getting involved with the local paper, uncovering unseemly politics and outright fraud, and nearly getting herself killed in an effort to expose the local dirty dealings.

Kathy Lynn Hall has set up a great start to an entertaining series starring Red, Joe, and even Red's deceased husband, Mac! I'm looking forward to book two, RED IS AN ATTITUDE...

Red is a fun loving lady who is widowed three years now, and with the death of her Aunt Esther and the inheiretence of the mobile home park she owned, she is able to make plans to travel the world. Except she finds once she gets to Nuggetville a mystery of corruption, vandleism and possibly murder that gets her unknown journalism juices flowing. She also finds love again with a chef, and friendships among the eccentric individuals that live in the park and in town.
Can she get her mojo back, get the bad guy, the good guy and save the town from progress that won't be good for it? Read Kathy Lynn Hall's Red Mojo Mama and find out for yourself. Be prepared to hang on to your chair, talk to ghosts, and take on a city council. And have a lot of red headed fun. Ms. Hall did not disappoint with this book at all.

I met Kathy Lynn Hall on twitter.

This book is a good mixture of mystery, romance, and paranormal events.

Lydia aka Red inherits a Mobile Home Park from a relative. That was the beginning of a new adventure that she didn't even know she wanted to have. Red being the sassy person she is, met the adventure head on... sometimes almost literally.

I really enjoyed the character, Lydia, because she was so sassy and adaptable. She had a lot thrown at her and she always seemed to make the best of it.

Smart, sexy and hilarious with just enough tearjerking thrown in for balance. Kathy Lynn Hall has created a memorable character that I, for one, hope to see again. Lydia "Red" Talbot is starting a new life in a new town after the death of her husband, who talks to her from the grave. All she wants to do is relax and maybe go on a cruise, but ends up battling corrupt politicians, helping the helpless and finding love. Fun read, even for dudes!

I really enjoyed this book so much I read it too fast. I am a firey red head who lives in Calaveras Co. I lived in and near Sacramento my entire life. Happily I left to live in a small town in a beautiful forest and small comunity. I related some to 'Red' and loved o the familiarity of my own home. I was compelled and intruded by warm characters and mystery! Great job, cant wait to read more by Kathy!

I would give this 4 stars but the Kindle version at least was irritating in its grammar and the worst part was at 83% or so the narrator is changed from first person to third and then goes back and forth until the end. If that had happened sooner, I would have not continued but I did like the story (and the characters) a lot and of course wanted to see how it ended. Granted, it was free so perhaps that's why but still hard to overlook/ignore.

This was a plain and simple fun read with a little ghost action thrown in. But what I want to know is what happened to Lucy? She'd better be taking proper care of Red in book 2, Red is an Attitude. Looking forward to watching Red's next adventure, off to Mexico, and discovering how Joe, Mac and maybe Aunt Esther--just guessing--back from the dead, play in the the new mystery and why does it follow them all the way back to Nuggetville? There is certainly more to learn about Red Mojo Mama.

I won this book on Goodreads First Reads. Let me start off by saying that I thought this would just be another cheesy romance, however, it was a romance/thriller, and Kathy Lynn Hall mastered her work. The story pulled me in (although it took a while to get there), and I really ended up enjoying it. Everyone will fall in love with Red.

When Red decides to start over and move into a trailer park, she has no idea what’s in store, including the ghost of her dead husband and a handsome handyman named Joe. She might have thought her mojo was a no go, but that’s all about to change in this humorous and sweet romance. This was a fun read with enough romance to spice it up without overwhelming it, and Red is a likeable character.

I thought this book was very good and very entertaining. Kathy Hall has a great relationship with her audience and you feel like you are right there in the story along side her. I truly enjoyed reading this book and can't wait to start on her next one.
