Roger Allen
99 books11 followersRoger Allen is an English scholar of Arabic literature. He has translated several Arabic works of literature into English, and has also written scholarly works on Arabic literature.
He was the first student at Oxford University to obtain a PhD degree in modern Arabic literature, which he did under the supervision of Muhammad Mustafa Badawi. His doctoral thesis was on Muhammad al-Muwaylihi’s narrative Hadith Isa ibn Hisham (Isa Ibn Hisham’s Tale), and was later published as a book titled A Period of Time (1974, 1992).
At the request of Dr Gaber Asfour, the Director-General of the Supreme Council for Culture in Egypt, he later prepared an edition of the complete works of Muhammad al-Muwaylihi (2002), and that of his father, Ibrahim al-Muwaylihi (2007).
In 1968, Allen moved from Bristol to Philadelphia to take up an academic position at the University of Pennsylvania, where he subsequently taught generations of students and Arabic scholars. He co-wrote an Arabic textbook with Adel Allouche, and was engaged with Arabic pedagogy throughout his career. After a 43-year career at UPenn, he retired in 2011, serving as chair of the Department of Near Eastern Languages & Civilizations for the last six years.
As a translator, Allen has brought forth into English numerous works of contemporary Arabic literature, a list of which is given below. His translations of Naguib Mahfouz were instrumental in bringing the Egyptian writer to global attention, and Allen also played a critical role in the nomination process that eventually led to Mahfouz winning the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1988.

الرواية العربية – روجر ألان
روجر ألان هو ناقد إنجليزي أمريكي من مواليد 1942 وهو حالياً أستاذ الأدب العربي في جامعة بنسيلفانيا الأمريكية.. وقد نشر ما يقارب الـ 30 بحثاً في الأدب العربي.
حين يدخل نوعٌ جديدٌ من الأدب إلى ثقافة جديدة، يدخل في عملية هضم تمر في ثلاث مراحل؛ ترجمة، تقليد ومن ثم؛ إبداع ! وهذه المراحل الثلاث تلخص تاريخ تطور الرواية العربية كما هي في هذا الكتاب. فالكتاب يبدأ مع الإرهاصات الأولى للرواية العربية كمحاولات ترجمة روايات أجنبية ونسبها للمترجم كما فعل المنفلوطي مع مجدولين. إلى محاولات التقليد التي جاءت أفضلها لهيكل. وأخيراً، جاء على الإبداع في الرواية العربية. حيث قام على تقديم رؤية نقدية لـ 12 عشرة رواية عربية وذلك في الفصل الأخير.
تسلسل الكتاب بدا منطقياً للغاية؛ فكانت البداية مع محاولة تعريف ماهية الرواية. ثم انتقل إلى التاريخ السياسي للأقطار العربية المختلفة وكان ذلك ضرورياً في رأيه لتفهم الخلفية السياسية والإجتماعية التي ولدت فيها الروايات العربية المذكورة. ثم انتقل إلى المحاولات الروائية الأولى في كل قطر منها. ثم جاءت مناقشة المحاولات العربية الجادة في الرواية.. ومنها ولربما أهمها تجربة نجيب محفوظ، غسان كنفاني، إبراهيم الكوني، عبد الرحمن منيف، إميل حبيبي، عبد الحكيم قاسم، حنان الشيخ، الطيب صالح، الغيطاني، جبرا إبراهيم جبرا وغيرهم.. وقد تناولتُ قراءاتي لبعض هؤلاء في مراجعتي لرواياتهم.
باختصار، الكتاب جميل.. وقد أعطاني فكرة جيدة عن الرواية العربية حتى أوائل التسعينات. قد يكون مثيراً للإهتمام للمهتمين في هذا الموضوع.

مدخل إلى عالم الرواية العربية منذ نشأته إلى التسعينات ، يضعك في الصورة بربط الأدب مع العوامل السياسية والاقتصادية في العالم العربي كله.

Super informative and educational.
I used this to write a thesis about representation in modern arabic fiction/novels, and this study was a good introduction into the genre, giving me a great overview of the historical context, the recurring themes and contemporary authors of literary fiction in the Arab world.
