An absolutely gorgeous coffee-table book that manages to be a lot more informative and interesting than many of its ilk. Mr Whitfield infuses his own enthusiasm for the subject in every page while also being aware that many explorers who added copious amounts to our knowledge of the world did not have this as their primary motive. There’s enough detail to flesh out the background to go and search out more on your own and it includes a bibliography for those who want to go further.

4/5 för en intressant genomgång av europeisk upptäcktsresande och följande kartografiska utveckling, men 6/5 för en enastående vacker estetik.

A fascinating insight into the history of exploration and the motives behind it.
