This farm favorite is now a board book, perfect for preschoolers.
"Cows in the pasture, moo, moo, moo. Roosters in the barnyard, cock-a-doodle-doo . . ."
It's another noisy morning on the farm, and all of the animals are where they should be -- except Goose. And where is Goose? Young children will enjoy clucking, mucking, mewing, and cooing while they search for Goose on every gorgeously illustrated spread.
Denise Fleming has written and illustrated many children’s picture books, including In the Tall, Tall Grass, Shout! Shout It Out!, and Sleepy, Oh So Sleepy. She won a Caldecott Honor for In the Small, Small Pond. Denise creates her colorful illustrations by pouring colored paper pulp through hand-cut stencils. She lives in Toledo, Ohio.
Barnyard Banter by Denise Fleming features a different barnyard animal and the sound it makes on each page.
Starting with "Cows in the pasture, moo, moo, moo", Fleming shows us roosters, hens, pigs, kittens, pigeons, mice, peacocks, donkeys, crows, crickets, frogs, and the goose, still chasing that butterfly!
Fleming's rhyming text goes right down the barnyard list. All the sounds are listed in a noisy group before we find goose chasing that elusive butterfly.
The illustrations, made by pouring colored cotton pulp through hand-cut stecils, are textured collages that suit this story well. Different perspectives and lots of color should attract readers. Kids will enjoy finding the goose in each double page spread.
This appealing farm sounds book is a good read-aloud choice. It can also work as a beginning reader. Recommended for school and public library collections.
For ages 2 to 6, animals, farms, read-aloud, animal sounds, and fans of Denise Fleming.
We got a themed box of books from the library about Farms and this was one of the books. Another Denise Fleming book and we enjoyed it. Not enough words to make it a level 1 reader, but still the illustrations were amazing and colorful and kept my preschoolers very interested. We also liked the different sounds the animals made and the added activity of trying to find the goose on every page. Overall a fun book about farm animals.
I get 25 librarian points deducted from me today for forgetting just how wonderful this book is. The goose and butterfly on every page, the bright colors, the movement on each spread are all great. The text scans perfectly and has some interesting, less common noises (burp, shriek, muck) thrown in with the familiar ones (moo, cluck, squeak, chirp).
A. This book is a baby/board book because it is made of a material that is difficult for infants and toddlers to destroy. The simplicity of the contents of the book, showing barnyard animals and the sounds they make and the fun rhyming and rhythmic text, also help establish the audience level of the book. It also is considered a picturebook because if only the pictures were there, the cohesive story line of the book (questioning where's the goose) won't be established. B. The texture of the illustrations of the story reflect the mood of wildlife, due to the use of dark and strong tribal colors. The illustrator uses this to reflect the liveliness of the animals in the book and how each animal results in a different mood. C. I would use this book in a whole-group in which I make a song out of the text in the book. Since the rhythm is so clearly established, it is easy to create a rap with the text. So I would use this for engagement and introducing rhyming sounds. Mostly for engagement though, since this book is made for very young readers. D. What sound does the donkey make? "Hee-Haw-Haw"
We love checking out some random books from our library. We saw "Barnyard Banter" by Denise Fleming and had to check it out for ourselves. This book was published in 1997, but was first published in 1994. It was another noisy morning on the farm, and all the animals were where they should be except for Goose.
The illustrations are very unique but really didn't grab my kids attention at all. I would really liked for it to have brighter colors. I did love that they had all different animals on the farm as my kids don't live near any farms. I love that it shows how busy the animals are and how they interact even in the fiction form. I think this book is great for toddlers and infants.
Denise Fleming does it again with another wonderful farmyard book. It's perfect for children learning animal noises and for units on farms. At one point, the book begs the question as to where goose is, which is so so clever because it makes children into more active readers--especially since goose is present in every page! This is just a super fun book all around!
F (2) loves this book all of a sudden. We're currently on a trip and brought several dozen books in a bag to read on the road and at bedtime each night and she keeps picking this one out again and again. She points to the goose with tremendous enthusiasm, and although she has known most of these animal sounds for a while this book taught her to proudly say, "Cah-a-doo-doo!" She is a big fan. I enjoy the bold and energetic drawings.
Barnyard Banter by Denise Flemming - What a lovely little book! Love the vivid colors and the associated sounds of the animals. Children will love hearing the sounds of the barnyard animals while they look for Goose! My son loved shouting out the animals sounds while looking at the pictures. Fantastic book for toddlers and preschoolers.
Super simple rhyming text introduces young kids to the different sounds that farm animals make. Bright, vivid illustrations that match other Denise Fleming books. (Not my favorite, but kids love the bright colors).
Great animal/sound book. Text doesn't have the best contrast on the illustrations. Better for toddlers who can follow along and make the different sounds.
I love reading this one because kids know most of the animals featured and can make their noise. You can talk about the different places the animals are on the farm: pasture, rafters, wallow, etc.
