The Power of Humility: Living Like Jesus

Rate this book
The Power and Freedom of a Humble Life
Pride is often the true reason why we get our feelings hurt, why we feel rejection, why we won’t admit to mistakes, why we want to be seen with certain people, and why we stay angry.

Jesus gives us the perfect example of a powerful life lived without conceit, smugness, or arrogance. So why do we not want to admit to our pride? It is because of our pride!

In The Power of Humility , R. T. Kendall challenges us to look deeply into our hearts and motives to recognize the pride and self-righteousness there. Using personal stories and enlightening examples from the Bible, he demonstrates how pride interferes with a close relationship with God and reveals how to overcome pride and become more like Jesus.

This book is a great read! It focuses on how Christianity is the epitome of self-forgetfulness and following Christ’s example, but so many of us struggle to follow this model. I would say a majority of this book focuses more on highlighting Pride and its effects because that is the way to find humility. I have so much to help me in this book & have felt convicted of so many things in my own walk with Christ!

Humbling and inspiring

R.T. Kendall does it again with this book. He teaches the importance and power of humility with grace and encouragement. I am thankful for the hard truths and gracious hope imparted in his words. This is a must read for all who follow Christ!

Fantastic. Although this is based in the Christian faith I think it could be useful to those who aren't Christians to read this one (or listened to - I listened to it on audible). Don't get me wrong, this is thoroughly based on the bible, however there are many concepts in here that can be taken on universally if one is willing to read despite having no faith in christ.

It is a life changing book for me. It has been guiding my perspectives about myself and others to the truth of God and who God wants me to be. I am truly taking a smack in the face of my pride and learning of the goodness of Humility, and even finding definition of Humility in things I never considered.

I am recommending this to all my friends and family - including non-christians.

Easy read but RT has a way of simplifying complex concepts and ideas. This book has taught me more about the peace of humility than ridding myself of pride. Though he does a fantastic job of communicating both.

There was a lot of great content in this book. It made me think of pride in a much deeper way. The audiobook narrator was a bit distracting for me, for some reason, but it could have been because I’ve listened to the author narrate before and had expected he would be narrating.

I am disappointed as this book is not a study on humility as titled but a book about pride and its effects. The book is also very rooted in a place and time and not particularly helpful.

Pride...nobody likes to talk about it, but R.T.Kendell, the author of, "Jealousy-The Sin No One Talks About", returns with a look at pride that, with the same easy going, but to the point style, addresses a sin that probrably is both lightly spoken of and can subconsciously slip into a person's life without an individual realizing it.

In, "The Power of Humilty", R.T.Kendell, looks at pride from a biblical sense and though shares that there can be "good pride", there is addressed the type of pride where as he shares in an excerpt,

"I therefore define pride essentially as taking oneself too seriously. Taking oneself too seriously is the common denominator in all proud people. It describes those who resent criticism, who are insecure, who cannot laugh at themselves, whose need of praise is constant, who see themselves as overly important, who fancy themselves as being very special to God (and think God bends the rules for them), who tend to blame others for their problems, who hate taking the blame, who cannot bear not getting the credit for the good they did, and who have an insatiable need to prove themselves."

A discussion in "pride" is both interesting and vital as we live in a society of "reality t.v." and driven by social media that, in a lot of sense is a form of self promotion, and with R.T.Kendell, it is look, at what point does pride become a hinderance into the Christian walk.

For anyone who uses social media, this felt to be an interesting book, as truthfully, social media is about "selling an image of oneself", a form of self-promotion and as one may see, lately, more pastors seem to be addressing both the issue and impact of Facebook and other forms of social media on the Christian walk and relationships.

Not talking down or to,Kendell really addresses the type of pride that can affect an individual such as:

There is social pride (keeping up with the Joneses),
spiritual pride (self-righteousness)
educational pride (impressing with degrees),theological pride, when one feels superior because of their rightness of doctrine, but

this is just a few of the types of pride that Kendell addresses and what is wonderful about his writing, is that its not belittling and Kendell shares how to learn from Sermon of the Mount among other examples of the bible and more than anything, this book isn't about being judgemental or feeling like being on a guilt trip, but seeking to help the reader ask questions to themselves and honestly see how God does not like pride that is self-righteously and about the self.

There are examples of tragic figures who, because of pride, lost focus on our Father in Heaven and focus a little too much on themselves and their personal achievements and with the book, "The Power of Humilty", Kendell seeks to remind the reader...its not about what other people have to think...its not about building ourselves here on earth and being noticed, but about Him, our Father in Heaven.

"The Power of Humilty' will have the reader, stop and ask themselves...are there any instances of self-righteous or arrogance and learn how God is there to help them rise about that and in the spirit of humilty, find peace and worship in and through our Heavenly Father.
This is a book that needs to be read with a teachable and open heart, and not for the easily offended, but for those who truly seek to be released from the sinfullness of a broken nature and be made whole in and through our Father in Heaven.

This book has completely made me re-evaluate how I consider myself in light of my faith. I can't give a higher commendation than that! RT manages to cover quite complex theology in a way that doesn't intimidate the reader, and I can't image anyone coming away from this book without feeling richer for having done so. A real treasure now on my bookshelf!

The Power of Humility by R.T. Kendall is a powerful indictment of the popular Christian sin of pride. Kendall, long the pastor of Westminster Chapel in London, England, brings his many years in the pulpit and the Lord's service to this study of how pride affects our faith and hampers our lives. He uses several biblical examples to demonstrate how God punishes those who rely on themselves instead of Him. Kendall even speaks honestly about his own battle with personal pride as well as stories he's witnessed personally. Pride may be the worst sin that keeps us from God, because even Christians can be very guilty of it, often masquerading as false humility. Here's a few of my favorite quotes from the book: You can talk about your failures and disappointments to almost anybody; you can only discuss your successes with a true friend. Pride makes us judge. It is pride that seeks to vindicate ourselves. The apostle Paul had made a huge step forward in this area: he refufsed to clear his name and simply chose to wait for the day God chooses to do it. You will not die by swallowing your pride. This is not always an easy book to read, as readers will often squirm with personal conviction, but it's a vital book to read for deeper faith.

There are so many things I didn't realize pride encompassed, such as self-pity. This is a great book on learning how to live the closest to Jesus, by living like him. RT Kendall writes about known and undetected forms of pride, and numerous ways to access the humility in our lives to be humble individuals who attract others.

Pride must go!

What incentives to abandon pride! RT gives us much to consider and ... hopefully deal with as we follow Christ.
