Irving Berlin's timeless song springs to life in this simple story of a father and daughter bunny who set off to join an Easter parade filled with flowers, balloons, and of course, Easter bonnets! The music and lyrics to the original song are also included.
Irving Berlin (born Israel Isidore Beilin (May 11, 1888– September 22, 1989) was a Russian-born American composer and songwriter. and one of the most prolific American songwriters in history.
Berlin was one of the few Tin Pan Alley/Broadway songwriters who wrote both lyrics and music for his songs. Although he never learned to read music beyond a rudimentary level, with the help of various uncredited musical assistants or collaborators, he eventually composed over 3,000 songs, many of which (e.g. "God Bless America", "White Christmas", "Anything You Can Do", "There's No Business Like Show Business") left an indelible mark on American music and culture. He composed seventeen film scores and twenty-one Broadway scores.
Huzzah! Mr Projectionist has this cued up for the eight foot screen tonight. I havent seen this since childhood. Shall I put on my tap shoes? The facts about the film
This is Irving Berlin's "Easter Parade" song set to illustrations by Lisa McCue. It is perhaps nothing remarkable but I am already a fan of the song and of McCue's adorable animals illustrations so I was the perfect audience for this sweet little PB. The assortment of animals dressed up in their Easter best, the cute setting (the town is mostly made in tree trunks of the forest) and the sweet father-daughter connection (it's from the daddy rabbit's perspective ) made me smile and warmed my heart.
I read this as regular text first, which does not work well at all. So I checked out the song on YouTube. It sounds vaguely familiar, in the way of old tunes that have been played in public settings to the point of turning into background noise. Regrettably, the lyrics and tune don't speak to me.
The illustrations are quite sweet, festive, and adorable. I imagine this book would be popular with little kids who like to get fancy for a special occasion. I know a mom and daughter who will probably love this, as they enjoy dressing up and singing old tunes and looking at cute little animals. I will recommend the book to them, but for me this was not a hit.
I listened to the song first, so the text worked. But I have to be honest; I'm just not a fan of celebrating Christians' most sacred holiday by dressing up in gewgaws, or of animals in clothes, or of the mocking way the other couples were portrayed. The love the daddy has for his little girl is wonderful, though.
Zoe loves the song and enjoys the illustrations as well. I think the pictures are wonderful to look at again and again and absolutely adorable. This is one we both enjoy.
Easter Parade is actually a melody, but was put into the form of a children's book for Easter. Their are lyrics at the end of the book that the children would probably enjoy to sing along with after the book has been read initially. This would be a great book just in time for Easter.
