There is something magical about reading second hand books. My father bought this book from the DaryaGanj sunday book market. It's been years since i read this book. I can't even find it now.

I don't remember the stories in the book, but I do remember the amazing illustrations, and the name written on the first page of the book, Shagufta Ali. More than the stories inside the book it was the story of the name that intrigued me. There was a name but no story. So I did what children do. I started weaving my own stories around the name.

This book for me is childhood wrapped in yellow hardcover, safe in some unknown corner where I can't find it, as it is for Shagufta. The book is the sanctuary of both our insulated memories.

One of my absolute favourite books as a child. I had no idea where Latvia, Lithuania or Estonia were, but their stories were magnificent. Strange, whimsical and utterly delightful.
