While reading this, it seems like I learned a lot more about Proudhon and how much he struggled throughout life, whether with finances or within his community. It seemed to drag on for a while, even though this is a relatively short book.
My edition is the Teach Yourself History series hardback published in 1957 by the English Universities Press. Wonderful. Clear and erudite and makes both Marx and Proudhorn comprehensible and accessible. When confronted with the failure of communism in real life, Marxists often say that there is nothing wrong with it in theory, just that its application has been flawed. This book clearly demonstrates that it is the theory itself that is the problem. Not only was it superseded by the time of Marx's death, but the theory itself presupposes a totalitarian state. But then the left seem to love totalitarianism
