About the only thing you'll learn from this book about Emily Dickenson is that there is almost nothing known about Emily Dickenson. This is a literary criticism book more than a biography. It's very short and yet drags along like a dying horse at times.

'she turned inward [...] partly through lack of anything else to do' - sure she was just bored and the result of that were over 1800 poems
'in the end dickinson was both a deliberate impersonation of a lunatic and a genuine madwoman' THE audacity of that comment................

I misread the author if this one and thought it was a collection of Dickinson poems. Instead it was literary criticism by Dickenson on Dickinson. I read it anyway. I good quick read and I learned a bit about the poet.

Four stars in 1985, 3 stars in 2022 because so much more has been unearthed about Emily Dickinson’s life since then.
