This is my last Christmas book this year. With so much going on during Christmas Week, I decided that a collection of novellas will be just the thing to keep me company as I slowly lose my mind this week. Set during Christmas in the American West during the period 1870 - 1880 they all have cute kids and hot guys, so it was a fun read.
Colorado Wife by Cheryl St. John: 4-Stars Wonderful tale of diner owner Rosalyne Emery and Needle Creek, Colorado businessman Sam Calhoun and the two orphans, Zandy and Matt, who bring them together. When two children are abandoned in front of her diner, Rosalyne is determined that Sam take responsibility for them as he grubstaked their dad who died in a mining accident.
Jubal's Gift by Elizabeth Lane: 4-Stars Jubal Trask rides into a trading post in the Arizona Territory with vengeance in his heart only to meet the sweet young girl he knew before the Civil War now grown into a beautiful woman helping to raise her niece and nephew after their mother has died. I loved how institutively Tess senses that something is wrong with Jubal, besides his war wounds, and won't give up until she finds out what that is. She is not the sweet young thing he left when he went to war, but a woman who knows what she wants and she wants Jubal.
Until Christmas by Mary Burton: 4-Stars Laura Butler lost her grandfather in a mining accident in October at his mine and the grief is still overwhelming not that it is Christmas. All she wants to do is sell the mine to Roman Maddox, get on a train for Virginia and leave Timberline, Colorado and its' awful memories behind. Roman has no intention of letting her leave and he won't sign the contract until Laura gives him a chance to change her mind. Stubborn man meets head strong woman. Great match and wonderful story.
I selfishly took a star because there are kids involved in all three of these bad boys. Even though the back cover drops that bomb, it still dissatisfied this reader, and because I'm secretly a nasty reviewer....fine, fine...I'll give it back.
Super cute characters. Super cute stories. They're separate, apart and distinct. Loved the setting and inclusion of theme. Good little anthology of love here!
This was a collection of three short Christmas themed stories set in Colorado as part of "Harlequin Historical". The premises of the stories are all dark--revenge, death, exploitation which all seem incongruous settings for Christmas stories. However, they were remarkably well written and each story could have been expanded into their own novels. Mainly, the development does feel rushed as they are about 100 pages each. There were a few sensuous moments, but not steamy. Strong female leads, darker, heros. Was engrossing and a nice escape book.

Having enjoyed multiple books by each author, I knew this book would be well worth my time. These are unique and meaningful stories -- enjoyable during Christmas, or at any other time. Enjoy.
Colorado Wife by Cheryl St.John Restaurant owner Rosalyne Emery finds a pair of orphans outside. It is winter and times are tough, the people keeping them could no longer afford to feed them. When Rosalyne finds out that their father was a miner who got a grubstake from the local tycoon, she decides that Sam Calhoun needs to take ownership. If Sam had not lent the money, the children's father would still be alive, caring for his kids.
When she marches over to Sam's home a party is doing on, she is introduced as Sam's fiancee. This is more than Rosalyne bargained for and she wants to correct the error with Sam's friends. Sam talks her out of it and the fun begins.
Jubal's Gift by Elizabeth Lane Elizabeth Lane proves that short stories can encompass major issues. Jubal Trask has come to Thomas Curry's home to kill him. The issue started in the Civil War when Thomas abandoned his best friend, who was severely injured in a major battle. Later on, Jubal learned that Thomas married Jubal's intended wife; recently she has died (after several years of marriage).
When Jubal arrives at Thomas' farm, the only ones there are Thomas' two children and Thomas' sister, Tess. She gave up her life to come and tend to her brother's children. Tess has been in love with Jubal since their childhood years.
Until Christmas by Mary Burton After her beloved grandfather dies in the silver mine he owns, Laura Butler decides to move back East and give the mine to grandfather's second-in-command, Roman Maddox. Maddox has grown up in the school-of-hard-knocks and understands Laura's grief. He also understands that she is taking a life-changing step to deal with a temporary problem. Laura's actions are integral to the comfort and welfare of the mining families. Roman only has 4 days to change her mind.
Christmas Gold is a historical anthology with stories by Cheryl St. John, Elizabeth Lane and Mary Burton. Each is set post-Civil War in the western US (territories at the time, for the most part).
Cheryl St. John's contribution is "Colorado Wife". Rosalyne owns an restaurant in a small mining town. One day she finds some orphans sitting on her doorstep and she takes them in. But, she wants to make Sam take responsibility for them. They get trapped in a pretend engagement, but can it become a reality?
"Jubal's Gift" is Elizabeth Lane's story. Years after the way, Jubal is set on killing Thomas for deserting him in the war. But instead of finding him, Jubal finds Thomas' two kids and their aunt, Tess. Tess has always loved Jubal, who loved another, but thought he died in the war. She wants to love this man who has returned to her, but is she too late?
"Until Christmas" by Mary Burton finished this anthology. Laura wants to sell the mine and move away after her grandfather's death, but Roman doesn't want her to leave until he has a chance to win her heart.
All three authors in this anthology were new-to-me, and I enjoyed each story. I felt that "Until Christmas" was probably the weakest story, only because it didn't seem as well developed as the other two. But that said, it was still a good story.
There are three stories in this holiday anthology. Story 1 - "Colorado Wife" is from Cheryl St. John. This story smacks of the influence of Pride and Prejudice, which is fine by me. Rosalyn Emery is a feisty restaurant owner in Needle Creek, Colorado, in 1875. Sam Calhoun finances the miners' stakes, which she thinks is cruel to bring their hopes up only to lose everything. At a private party, she is mistaken for Sam's betrothed. Story 2 - "Jubal's Gift" is from Elizabeth Lane. This one is set in Arizona Territory in December 1873. Jubal plans to kill Tom Curry, but when he again encounters Tom's sister Tess and then meets Tom's children, his hatred for the coward in Tom weakens. Story 3 - "Until Christmas" is from Mary Burton. When her grandfather dies in a mining accident, Laura Butler decides to sell the mine to Roman Maddox and then return to the East. But Roman has other ideas.
Three Western historical American stories set in small towns with orphan children added to the romance of the main couple. The fist story is about a small mining town with a clean romance about a spunky restaurant owning young lady and the town's richest bachelor. The second story is has lot of regrets and mistakes that come to a head right before Christmas when a guy shows up looking for revenge with a childhood friend and finds love instead. The last story starts with a death and ends with a wedding. We find ourselves for a couple of days in a small mining town when the lady owner of the mine falls in love on a schedule when she is going to leave town forever and the mining manager wants to woo her. Not a clean romance as they all have some sexy time and kisses, but it is sensual and not explicit. 298 pages and bought at the library sale. 2 stars
