Filled with marvelous stories, anecdotes and personality profiles, this book explores the importance of sport--both watching and playing--as a middle ground for a minority culture actively determining for itself what it meant to be an American Jew. Photos.
I actually enjoyed this book quite a bit. I thought it was just going to be stories about Jewish atheletes but it was it was more of a story of three generations of American Jews and the impact of star athletes. I didn't know the dominance of Jewish basketball players in the 20s and 30s and all of the championship Jewish boxers. I of course knew about Sandy Koufax and Hank Greenberg but didn't know that the NY Giants actively recruit Jewish baseball players to counter the publicity of Babe Ruth in New Yorki. Good book
