The Ultimate Anti-Career Guide: The Inner Path to Finding Your Work in the World

Rate this book
Arguing that traditional career strategies are simply reactions to the job market, the author explains how an anti-career is a manifestation of the unique blueprint for your destiny encoded in your body since birth, and shows frustrated job-seekers how to open up and heed their intuition, transform their values into action, and answer their true callings instead of settling for a paycheck.

I am not much of a new age type, and parts of the audiobook have me rolling my eyes for sure. even so, I listened to this first ten years ago, and I've returned to it several times. If you listen with a grain of salt and an open mind, it can help you look at your career and your life path in a different way. If you are seeking a conventional, typical career path, it might not be for you. But if you are seeking Something Different, give it a try.

And refreshing take on what “work” means after you’ve had a spiritual awakening and feel out of place in modern life. As someone who cares a lot about authenticity and is jaded and bored of the “hustle and grind,” this book offers some insights into a more holistic approach toward life fulfillment and how your life’s work is more than just a paycheck.

So interesting to read the critiques of others. This was a seminar book in my life in 2012 It’s not a book for spiritual seekers or spiritual explorers. It’s a workbook for those offering philosophical, psychological, and spiritual gifts into the world in an entrepreneurial way. A profound 15+ hour workbook for me that launched a career worth having.

I read the introduction but could not figure out what this book is about. It seems to advocate an alternative lifestyle or life philosophy and is connected with some oriental teachings. So I stopped reading.

Listened to this audiobook mostly in the car, which is not the best approach. Jarow leads many guided meditations throughout this program, so I recommend giving the audiobook one's full attention to get the most out of it.

Jarow is an engaging speaker. He does have a noticeable New York accent, which I found charming, but it may bother someone else, so listen to a sample first, if you can.

There are lots of things that rang true for me in this program, but he does get a little "woo-woo" at times. Much of the program is spent comparing finding one's career path to the seven chakras, but then there was a whole other analogy involving Native American medicine wheels where where he lost me.

Overall, an interesting program with some good take-aways. I plan to listen to this one again because I think the more one puts into it, the more one might get out of it, especially with the meditations he leads.

As other reviewers have pointed out, the author uses a base of Chakra theory mixed with other oriental practices, theories of manifestation and even Native American symbolism such as a Medicine Wheel to get his message across. If you find this ridiculous and weird, then steer away from this book. If you can accept this as a platform of symbolism to lead to a different approach to life and career, then I think Rick Jarow provides that platform in a way that is powerful and at the same time enlightening.

Not saying he didn't have a few good suggestions though this wasn't a book about choosing a career but one to push his religious beliefs trying to do that under the radar. The new ageism is old news; just old religion repackaged. I tried to stomach it, though I couldn't even get through a couple of chapters, which is totally against my OCD reading rules. That is big for me. One of the worse books ever.

If you need another view, then try this. Its a good double take on whatever it is you are thinking you should be doing, and an intro to questions you may not have asked yourself yet. When you need a kick in the butt to start thinking, this is a good choice.

I listened to the audiobook. It has some interesting ideas and cool meditations. It is a little "out there", but if you are open minded, I would recommend giving it a try. Very different approach. I actually feel more centered after doing the meditations.

Insightful, good suggestions, I liked the holistic approach to career building. The book is unlike other ones on the same topic. It inspires you to do more 'thinking outside the box'.
