This is THE singular defining guide to the way my eight dogs are raised and cared for. The value of the book, to me, is in the information about the Volhard Natural diet, which I honestly believe to be the best fresh/raw/homemade diet out there. Wendy has years and generations of dogs behind her research and clinical testing to back up her formula.

If you can get hold of the out-of-print (usually available on alibris.com and other places) FIRST edition of this book, and use it in combination with the newer edition, even better. Each edition has something that the other lacks. I really wish there could be a third edition that would not only update everything, but combine the first two.

There have been times, over the years, when, due to personal stress and time constraints, we've had to go back to a premium kibble for our dogs...and you can ABSOLUTELY tell the difference. You can tell a VND-fed dog in an instant, once you're used to them. They're just more...vital.

I am not one of those raw-diet fanatics who believes that if you do any less, you are abusing your dogs, and I have, and do, let show-puppies go to homes that do not commit to feeding Volhard...but oh, how much happier I am when they go to homes that DO.

Try it. The proof is in the pudding, or in my case, the poodles.

What is happening in this book? Give your dog raisins and soak your meat and veggies in bleach? Beyond that the authors' voice is demanding and condescending. I'm all for the basics of blood testing and feeding dogs a healthy homemade meal, but dumping in all these vitamins and minerals is insane, you'd need to be a scientist to feed your dog and better off with crap kibble from the store. And the section on Kinesiology is interesting, for people, not helpful for a dog, this continues to discret the authors as logical.

A little bit dated, don't feed your dog raising or soak food in bleach, but a great overview of holistic care, homeopathy, supplements, and kinesiology.
