The Pacific Northwest . . . home to lush forests and constant rain, to lumberjacks and computer geeks, especially those of the vampire kind.

Sophia, beautiful and deadly, has spent the last hundred years dancing her way through the balmy nights and hot-blooded men of South America. But when her Sire sends an urgent summons, Sophia rushes home to Vancouver only to find he has disappeared, leaving nothing behind but three dead vampires and a letter with Sophia’s name on it.

Colin Murphy, a former Navy SEAL, came to the Northwest seeking a quiet place to heal the scars earned in more than a decade at war. But when someone starts killing local vampires and torturing their mates, Colin takes on the mantle of a warrior once again as he sets out to find the killers and do whatever it takes to stop them, even if that means hunting with vampires.

Following her Sire’s trail of death to a small town in northern Washington, Sophia unexpectedly discovers the heat of a South American night in Colin’s arms. But all too soon Sophia and Colin find themselves in a race to uncover the killers before the next dead vampire is Sophia herself.

5 Long lost Love Stars

First read 3/2014
Reread 5/2019

Sophia, the 4th book in the Vampires in America series, was a really good read. I love that this book not only gave us a new cute couple, but plenty of Raphael and Cyn too. The action in this book was great. The plot kept me on edge. The love connection was strong from both Sophia and Colin, and Raphael and Cyn. I loved that Sophia and Colin were a second chance love.

Colin was sexy and protective. Being a former Navy Seal, he was all that was yummy. Sophia was more of a free spirit, just drifting through life. She was smart and powerful, but not doing anything worth while. Being so different they really complemented each other. They made such a cute couple. I love that Sophia really came into her own. She was a powerful woman, and she knew it. I loved that Colin wasn't put off by Sophia's power, but was proud. Raphael and Cyn had something big happen in this book, and my heart broke for Raphael. This read was never boring. It was heart breaking at times, but so entertaining. I can't wait to read the next book!

I only read through Raphael and Cyn's parts in this re-read. I did not care for Sophia and Colin. But I love seeing Raphael - and Cyn - through others people's eye. Specially when they talk about how powerful Raphael is. I do love me some powerful men. I never EVER want someone more powerful than Raphael in this series!

Quick basic facts:
Genre: - (Adult) Paranormal Romance (M/F).
Series: - Series, Book Four.
Love triangle? -
Cheating? -
HEA? -
Favorite character? - Lord Raphael.
Would I read more by this author/or of series? - Yes.
Would I recommend this book/series? - Yes, manly because of Raphael.
Will I read this again in the future? - It's Raphael, so guess.
Rating - 2.5 stars.

First read review:
My dear Raphael... I LOVE YOU!!!! I would easily given this book 4 stars, just for my favorite couple in the series (Cyn & Raphael), however Sophia and Colin's part was boring, hence the 3 stars..

BE READY FOR SOME MORE RAPHAEL AND CYN TIME!
SO GOOD! I was disappointed with the previous book but this one got me obsessed about the series all over again. Of course I loved this book so much because it was mostly about Raphael and Cyn, **sigh, which are one of the best couples I have been reading about lately. While the book is called Sophia and introduces us to a new couple, that relationship is almost quickly and shallowly described. And I'm ashamed to say that this was what I loved the most about the book because it meant more Raphael and Cyn time, lol. I admire them individually, but I glorify even more about them as a couple. Raphael will always be the most powerful and scariest vampire around while Cyn will remain the most kick-ass female, and it just works perfectly for them this way. They may be almighty and unreachable for most people but with each other they are PERFECT. You can really see how crazy they are about each other and how NOTHING will ever get between them. **SIGH, I just can't get enough of them.

DID I FORGET TO MENTION SOMETHING ABOUT THE PLOT? sorry about that, I guess I got TOO FOCUSED on CYN AND RAPHAEL, lol.
In this installment we see how Raphael and Cyn help Sophia to find the missing Canadian Lord and solving some vampire murders. Sophie is the Canadian Lord's most powerful child and is summoned by him to get things right after he makes a mess of everything. The Canadian Lord is not like Raphael, he's lazy, shallow and uncaring of his children. He leaves Sophie to solve this huge mess he has created and sends the killers to Raphael's territory because he knows raphael is stronger and can beat them while he can't. Raphael wasn't waiting for this killers to come and some terrible things will happen to his people.

Be ready for a lot of action, romance and some weeping, lol. This book has it all. Another amazing read from this author. Can't wait to read the next. I seriously hope more books are to come because I will never get bored of reading about this terrific couple.

If you decide to read this series, you are actually going in at the right time, because the books are already out there. You see, our beloved author is all about the tease...

If you haven't seen this talking dog, you have not lived.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYMuS...

Every book ends in a cliffhanger. Just know that going in and you will be fine. I don't care as long as the next book is available. I just feel like I'm watching my stories or something.

The other thing I've noticed is that the author isn't that great at writing women. So far, I've only liked Cyn, and she is still a vain, stubborn, catty girl sometimes. I like her in spite of some of her thoughts, like calling Sophia fat because she is curvy and flirted with Raphael.

Which brings me to Sophia herself. Not a fan. This girl's name should be Sluttia, not Sophia. She uses her sexuality as a weapon in a way that diminishes the female sex. When she perceives one guy being rude to her, she thinks about seducing him and then leaving him with his d*ck in his hand, literally. When she meets Raphael, she shamelessly flirts in a not-cute but slutty way, and then hates Cyn for being Raphael's mate. And, the worst example: She grabs a guy's crotch that she is trying to seduce and then gets super offended when he moves away from her. She actually says the words "How dare you?" - the rally cry of spoiled, entitled assholes everywhere - and tries to slap his face for simply not being interested in what she was so shamelessly offering.

Only an old-timey cat can pull off the "how dare you" question

But, the good news is that Sophia's actual story is pretty minor in this book. The story focuses more on the murder mystery that Raphael and gang are trying to solve. That part was pretty good, and the relationship between Raphael and Cyn was even better. I just love when a series has a main book couple that I like together. As long as they are not always breaking-up, or other bullshit, it is fun to watch their relationship grow as the series goes on. Some of my favorite couples have been together for many books and they never get old, like:
Archangel Raphael and his mate Elena in the Guild Hunter series
Roarke and Eve Dallas in the In Death series
Valek and Yelena in the Study series
and Cat and Bones in the Night Huntress series

(I'm sure I'm forgetting some)

But, the point is that Raphael and Cyn are carrying this series and I hope they continue to be a big presence in the remaining books.

Aww, vampire smut is so romantic!

This series is so underrated that it makes me cry.

Brutal vampires, tight writing, and hot sex = amazingness.

This 4th book in this series was possibly my favorite. We get a TON of Raphael and Cyn, which was an enormously pleasant treat, and also got a great main couple with Sophia and Colin. While Sophia and Colin don't hold a candle to Raphael and Cyn, I liked the twist of featuring a female vampire and her human mate.

I think I'm also getting very used to the gruesome nature of these books. I, shockingly, was practically egging Raphael on as he was torturing some baddies and kind of dug the more gory facets of this book. Huh. This book also featured a smart plot and some nicely paced action scenes.

This series is stands out for me as having clever and independent characters, especially the female ones. I think the writer continues to take this series in an excellent direction, and I can't wait to see what she has in store for my beloved southern boy, Duncan. On to the next in the series!

OMG...what a fantastic read. This series just keeps getting better and better. I loved Sophia with her strength and determination and her love for Colin. I loved Colin just a much for the same reasons. But let me tell you folks Raphael was off the charts; damn I can't even put in to words what I felt for him. I've always had a soft spot for him but now...all I can say is WOW! Of course Cyn was present and you have give the girl props. She's tough as nails and when she's injured by some dip shits who target her to get to Raphael, they have no idea of what they've set in to motion.
This story has it all, it's dark, tense and the sex scene are f---ing awesome.
I can't get enough of the Vampires in America series. We know that Duncan's story is next and the way Ms. Reynolds ended this book is going to drive me nuts, just waiting for it's release. Then there's Lucas' story, I sure hope that's not the end of the series. I can't see it ending anytime soon or at least I hope so. There are so many stories to be told and I hope like hell Ms. Reynolds get to tell them all.
Get off the couch, get to your local bookstore and buy this book, buy this series, you'll be so damn glad you did. Awesome, fantastic, fabulous read, what more can I say. If I could give it more than five stars you better believe I would.
Thank you Ms. Reynolds for creating this world.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!!

Sophia has been summed from her home in South America to Vancouver by her Sire. Upon her arrival, she finds that he is missing and has left a letter and a picture of three murdered vampires that will lead her over the boarder and into the territory of a very powerful vampire lord. Sophia knows that what lies ahead for her will be dangerous but what she never expected to see was the man she fell in love with a decade ago. Colin Murphy is a retired Navy SEAL and is currently working security for a small Northwestern town. After responding to what he thought would be a routine complaint, he learns that vampires are being killed and their mates are being brutalized. Once he's over the initial shock and ache of seeing Sophia again, Colin teams up with the vampires to find all responsible before the beautiful vampire that makes him burn with desire becomes the next victim.

Sophia is the strongest amongst her Sire's children but has spent more time enjoying her vampire existence in South America rather than working on strengthening her power. She is confident and feminine yet will not hesitate to use her abilities when needed. I liked that Sophia is not just another beautiful vampire seductress. Her past is tragic and the affection she has for Colin in genuine. I did have a slight problem with her. You read that she has power but I did not feel it as I do when I come across other characters like Raphael or Duncan or even other female characters like Cyn or Elke.

Colin may not be a vampire but that doesn't mean he'll hide when there is danger, which is what he finds during his search for those responsible for killing local vampires. He's clever, handsome and doesn't cower in the presence of commanding vampires such as Lord Raphael. I liked that his relationship with Sophia wasn't easy because it added depth to something that could have been just another sex based pairing that is common in this genre.

Vampire Lord Raphael and his mate Cyn are in Washington because two of his own have were murdered and he intends to find and punish all those responsible. Raphael is back and he is livid over the killings of his children. I feel like we get to see a different side of the vampire lord in this book. Cyn is of course at his side and we see that there are still some issues that need to be worked on when it comes to Cyn's safety and Raphael's protectiveness. I thought every scene with Raphael and Cyn was wonderful but I can't help feeling that Colin and Sophia should have been given more page time devoted to their relationship and characters.

Sophia is book 4 is D.B. Reynold's spectacularly written Vampires in America series. The way D.B. describes everything from the way her characters behave and their appearance to the smallest details of the setting, makes you feel as if vampires are "real". There is everything in this series that makes a vampire story good but D.B.'s fantastic writing elevates it and makes it great. While I did have a few minor issues, Sophia was still a satisfying read with suspense, romance and a gratifying hunt for revenge. Duncan's book is next and it can not be released soon enough for me.

A book about vampires which involves romance, action, politics and a good dose of investigation.

When I first read the title of the series, I thought it was going to be something like True Blood and I'm glad that it actually isn't.

Most stories are around powerful alpha males, but this one was centered on a female character. There aren't many female characters so far in the series, but the ones introduced so far are strong, smart, feminine -each in their own way- and brave, like Cyn, Elke and Sophie.

It shows a great deal of racism, sexism and betrayal, but as well as loyalty, justice and alliance. Most people seek balance, but some times when the scale is tipped then one can go to extreme retaliation to balance it again.

4* for Raphael and Cyn

This will be in 2 parts and as always will contain SPOILERS

At the end of the previous book we get a scene with Cyn crying and Raphael covered in blood, turns out he was crying (whew). Two of Raphael's vampires have been murdered and the mate of another has been tortured and raped. Raphael and Cyn immediately head up to his territory to see what's going on. There they along with former Navy Seal now security officer/local law officer Colin, and Raphael's trusted people uncover a plot by humans to kill vampires. Cyn and Raphael butt heads as they each seek to protect the other but Cyn's never been the type to sit back and hide behind her badass vampire mate. When off on an investigation with Colin and Rob she's shot by the humans and comes within a hairsbreadth of dying.

I adore Cyn and Raphael, they may now be in the elite company of Eve and Roarke or Raphael and Elena as my all time favorite couples. The love between the badass PI and her vampire Lord gives me all the feels. I teared up a couple times here especially at Raphael's reaction to Cyn being hurt. I gloried in his blood thirty retribution against the humans who murdered and raped his people as well as hurt Cyn. The moments between Raphael and Cyn, or really any moments with them in it made this book for me and is the ONLY reason why I rated this book so high.

The subplot in this book is the disappearance of vampire Lord Lucien. Before his disappearance he summoned his strongest child, Sophia, home from her home in Rio. Sophia is the first female vampire who got her own story, so I expected a cross between Cyn and Elke, Raphael's vampire bodyguard for Cyn, instead however we get a vain, slutty vampire with a temper. I disliked her on sight! (Well first read) in the previous books we don't get sexual scenes with anyone else than the h/H, though in book 1 Cyn's scene was implied and Raphael came close. In this instance not only does Sophia fondly remember her boys in Rio but when she arrives at her Sire's home she feeds from a young gentleman and in her generosity gives him a hand job, but only because the sun was close to rising so she was about to sleep 🤦 few scenes later she meets Raphael for the first time and finds him attractive so she turns on the sex kitten, in front of Cyn who she didn't know was Raphael's mate. Of course that goes nowhere so she's subtly shut down. Then a few scenes later she sees Colin, the human former Seal and *gasp* he's her former lover and *gasp again* the only man she ever loved. Oh for the love of........... See almost a decade ago Sophia made Colin think she'd died because really as much as she loved him, she was vampire and he human, so how could they work *tears* she let him go FOR HIS OWN GOOD! Never mind that he was devastated at her "death" because he'd loved her and the other human/vamp couples are doing just fine nope Miss Sophia spared her poor human lover the truth of her vampire race and set him free, she then proceeded in her fun and cock filled life until she sees him again. She attempts to seduce Colin but he pushes her away *yay* .When she sees him laughing with Cyn her jealousy prompts her to go to him and explain how much she'd loved him and why she let him go as well as the tragic details of how she first became vampire ( I sympathized with her then but still I couldn't like her ). A bang and shimmy later they're mated *double gasp* I was pissed! Colin deserved much better than Sophia. The plot of Sophia's sire, who coincidentally was also her former lover is wrapped up neatly, she's set up in a seat of power because she is the most powerful of his children and they ride off into the sunset.

If the Colin and Sophia shit show had been the main story here I'd have rated this one star and moved on but because of Raphael and Cyn I'm rating this higher and counting it as a win. Colin and Sophia have already been erased from my memory which is a shame because Colin on his own I liked. Nevertheless on to the next.

Aly: Hello guys! Me and Maru finished the 4th book in the Vampires in America series and wanted to share with you our thoughts. Maru what did you think of it?
Maru: I loved that we had so much of Raphael and Cyn!!! Of course both were pure kickass and übber steamy :)) I really enjoyed the story line and how the author continued the world building. What about you Aly?
Aly: I liked it for the same reasons, but I wasn't impressed with the main characters, we had too little development for them. How do you feel about the "lovers reunited" theme?
Maru: I think the author gave us a lot of background...regarding the lovers reunited...I liked it...I think it was kinda original, but also out of the blue. And how they were separated and why, I wasn´t Sophia´s fan for almost the whole book...then I ended up liking her. You?
Aly: I can't say I liked or disliked her... but about the theme, well, I think the author didn't give enough detail for their story. She says why they were apart, but doesn't say how they meet(or I don't remember) or how they were together, for how much time. Too sketchy for me .
Maru: Yeah, she only says why and how they separated...even though it was titled Sophia, it revolved more around Cyn and Raphael. I would´ve loved to read more background on their love story.
Aly: Yep but I can't say I'm unhappy that we had more Raphael and Cyn. They are my favorite pair! How did you like Colin? :>
Maru: Exactly! LOL Yeah I did, I they Sophia and him fit like a couple...if I were him I would´ve made Sophia worked a bit harder to get me back...come on, she acted dead for like 10 years and then she pretends nothing is wrong?

Aly: I had the same thought! I get that she's hot, but come on! A little dignity
Maru: My thoughts exactly!! But on the other hand, he didn´t have her for 10 years so maybe that´s why he felt his dignity behind
Aly: :))))) it's not like he stayed without "woman interaction" Another thing I didn't like was Sophia's sire. He was pathetic and weak and I kept comparing him with Raphael, at least those small moments we saw him
Maru: yeah me too! And that poor human he had under his spell.
Aly: Yhea! I didn't like that assistant chick either, she was too slavish(is that a word? never mind...)
Maru: Yeah...Poor thing, she had her mind fucked with. I think of all the books so far, this is one is my least fave...but I did like all the Cyn and Raphael stuff
Aly: I feel the same way. It was low on the main couple stuff, but high on Raphael and Cyn
Maru: Yes!! Which I loved. So overall 4 stars?
Aly: Hmmm then the rating would be a 5* for them and a 3* for Sophia and Colin...
Maru: yeah...4.5* bc of the steamy scenes we got from Raphael?
Aly: :)))) I'm staying with 4*. Thanks for the attention guys! See you next time.

I am a bit disappointed by this one...well, actually with one part of it, the part that follows Sophia and Colin's story - which is where the disappointment comes in "what story"?
I didn't feel shit, for them, about them, or whatsoever!

BUT
luckily we have another part that follows right beside the story line and that one follows the remarkable duo: Raphael and Cyn, if there weren't for them, I'm actually sad to say, I would have probably ditch the book!

so, thank fuck for them!

I love the action, I like the way the author leads us through events and I will continue to follow her works...

and to you, scary as fuck bloodsucker, Raphael:
"...I love you, fang boy."

well, Jared (from Deep in your veins) is still my #1, though, so don't hold any grudges...there's enough room for everyone!

Strong 2.5 to 3. Yes, the epilogue is nothing more than a set up for the next book ending with a tacky "to be continued" just like all the other books. Yes, I downgraded a star for it. In fairness to the book, however, if you skip the epilogue the books is fairly self contained, making allowances for the longer arc.

The book was not too bad, but it was a bit haphazard. The romance elements were as much, or more, about Raphael and Cyn as they were about Sophia and Colin. I found myself flipping through the sex scenes because the story was suffering for the frequency of the sex scenes until later in the book. Also, the timeframe and POV jumped around a lot. So between the jumping back and forth of two romances, the changing POV between at least four people, and the fluctuating time line (with a fair number of flashbacks) it served to make it a bit more clumsy than it could have been.

Not a bad story over all, though, and there were elements of great drama and emotion in it.

This was my least favorite of the series so far, Sophie was not a great character. And her and Colins story line was really just a tie in for the real story. Raphael and Cyn are called to investigate the deaths of 2 of Raphaels vampires. The storyline is a murder mystery plot, but somehow starts with Sophia's sire Lucien screwing up royally in Vancover. I think this story could have survived without Sophia all together and could just have been another Raphael and Cyn mystery. But I'm not the author, just the reader. And I found myself skimming the book through most of the interaction between Sophia and Colin, they just didn't hold any interest for me. Overall, it just seemed like this was a bridge or "filler" until we get to the next book, which is about Duncan. I am really looking forward to Duncan's story.

This book was better than the last as far as plot. Still the book could use a content editor to straighten out silly plot holes and keep the world building consistent. However as always, it's entertaining.

This installment has more of Raphael. And this author can write a hell out of an alpha male. Collin was delicious.

Unfortunately the relationship between Sophia and Collin lacked depth. It was based on a second chance but we got very little in the way history between the two. Therefore I didn't get their connection at all.

And the narrator is good, but the voice she choose to use for Sophia made her sound whinny and irritating.

Okay...Before I begin I will tell you the reason why I liked this book so much. Almost half the book is told by the POV of none other but my favorite Vampire in the series, Raphael.

*****SPOILERS*****

Raphael and his gang will travel to Seattle to investigate the death of two of his children and will find out that there was a third attempt that didn't work out. With the help of Cyn, Sophia (a vampire who belongs to Lucien but has come to Seattle following leads her sire left her on another triple murder) and Colin (the human man who passes as police in the little town out of Seattle where the vamps live), Raphael will try to find out who harmed his children and avenge them.

Sophia is 300 years old and the most powerful vampire Lucien has sired but she lives very far from Lucien's territory. After Lucien urgent summons she arrives to Canada to find him gone and discoveres that he has shrugged his responsibilities on her which could very well mean her death. After following his directions to Seattle she finds out that there are more than the three deaths in Canada but she also comes face to face with Colin, the only man she ever loved, the man she betrayed.

I have to admit that I found really interesting the "three person POV", the fact that the story focused on two different couples added to the excitement and helped in not getting bored.

So...

My Colin...

Colin had served in the Marines for twelve years when he decided it was time to retire. Colin has loved one woman his whole life and he has thought her dead for ten years. Can he get over the lies and betrayal and claim Sophia?

Colin is a strong male character. He is a man confident in his own skin but not arrogant, an alpha male without domineering tendencies, his first instict is to protect Sophia but he allows he doesn't let his protectiveness get in her way. This is what I liked most in Colin. He acknowledges Sophia's power and doesn't try to get her to cower behind him. Oh...And of course his hot!

My Sophia...

Sophia was turned at the age of 22 after she lost everything she cared about. Lucien offered her a new life and she accepted without any regret. She enjoys the fact that she is a Vampire(none of the depressing "I'm-a-monster" stuff. Her one true regret is Colin.

Sophia is a strong woman. She isn't a warrior but she learned to fight in order to survive and in a world where power isn't measured only in muscle she is strong enough to take almost every challenger on. What I liked about Sophia is that she does shed her feminine side, she uses it as a weapon. It shows the fact that a woman can be feminine and strong in the same time. This lady may look like the "damsel in distress" type but she hasn't been in a long time!

What we don't get to see in the book is the romance built-up between Colin and Sophia but this is understandable since they've been in love for the last ten years so no problems there...

Back to Raphael and Cyn, we get to see how our favorite couple is doing. I'm happy to say that Cyn continues to be the same stubborn, badass self and Raphael continues to be his overprotective one (not that he doesn't have a good reason with Cyn's tendencies to get in trouble all the time).

So all the above combined with an interesting story and the usual awesome secondary characters make one happy reader.

Of course at the end of the book we had the anticipated cliffahnger. Anticipated since Reynolds seems to love them, interesting nonetheless since the next book belongs to Duncan (*kissing noises*) and I really can't wait to read his story. Hope it doesn't dissapoint!

Even though I freaking love this series, the 'to be continued...' endings are getting really old. The books will sell without the little three paragraph cliffhangers. They're good enough. Just saying.

And while I love the series, I was a bit disappointed with Sophia's story. It was actually only half her story and half went back to Raphael and Cyn. Not that I'm complaining about more Raphael! It was just a bit convoluted, bouncing back and forth between the two couples. It seemed as if Sophia and Colin got shortchanged. And, I suppose I have to admit that I didn't really like Sophia. She seemed vain and presumptuous, but didn't really have anything to back it up with. She supposedly has tons of vampy power, but never really showed it. And she was kind of a jerk to Colin and expected him to get over it and sleep with her already. Colin was a great guy, totally macho hero type, and I would have wanted someone to treasure him a bit more, and value him.

Raphael and Cyn's part of the story was awesome. Each time we read more from them, it gets deeper, more emotional than the last. Raphael has been notorious for holding himself back, even from Cyn. But he loses control in this book, and it's marvelous to hear about. It may sound silly, but you can FEEL his power pouring off the pages. You can tell that he is quite simply the most powerful vampire around, and when his feelings and emotions come out, they're just as powerful as he is. Cyn is truly his other half. And I think I may love Cyn just as much as Raphael. She is still, of course, a kick-a** woman, but she's not afraid to show her softer side or her love for her man. She's the perfect balance of independence and vulnerability. I'm so very glad that Ms. Reynolds is sticking with Cyn and Raphael. We get to see more of their relationship than just the first gooey stages of infatuation/love. We are now getting a better understanding of the more meaningful, forever type of love that will sustain them.

Raphael & Cyn are up front & center again as they find themselves at the heart of the trouble brewing with the horrific deaths of a few of Raphael's vampires. Raphael goes into protection & revenge mode, his main goal to keep Cyn safe while he hunts down the perpetrators & deals out his own punishment. The banter between Raphael & Cyn is laugh out loud worthy as he continues to try to cage his mate for her own protection, and she keeps telling him no way in hell will she allow it. Their quotes are hilarious. But things quickly turn serious when danger comes knocking on their door. There's a leak in Raphael's compound - someone is passing on key information to the enemies. And when an ambush leaves Cyn battling for her life, everyone fears the coming darkness because when Raphael awakens, blood will stain the earth black as he will eradicate all those involved in harming his mate. Meantime, Sophia is reconnecting with a past lover as sparks fly once again. And yet, she must locate her Sire, Lucien, and find out how much he is involved in the killing of Raphael's vampires. One thing is for sure...it's all coming to an explosive end soon. Sophia is a great read, one of my favorites. A Must Read!

This was the fourth book in the series. I love this series!

The published synopsis is a little off! That's the secondary plot! Really, the main story focuses on Cyn & Raphael... Still.

Raphael feels 2 vampires get murdered in his sleep, so he and his entourage (including Cyn) head off the Washington State to find the murderers. One human woman was raped and almost killed. She was the mate of another vampire.

Sophia comes to Washington from Canada, because her maker requests her to come to him & he has left a letter. Sophia reads it & immediately leaving for Vancouver, WA to hunt down her maker & to find the people who also murdered two vampires in Canada.

While Sophia is in Washington, she runs into an old flame, who is the acting sheriff.

Sophia's story takes about 1/3 of the book where Raphael's takes most of it up.

I really did like this book, but it was supposed to be Sophia's story. Since it really wasn't I docked a point. HOWEVER, I don't think I would have liked it as much if it was. I still like Raphael! I am really glad he's still very much around!

This is a "must read" series!!

4.5 stars.

More about Raphael and Cyn here than Sophia and Collin.
Well, I'm not complaining, I love to get more R&C than anyone else from this series:)

2 stars is me being generous. It's the weakest of the bunch

Every series is likely to have a weak entry and this one is it for Vampires in America. Raphael and Cyn are back in the spotlight, but they now they share it with a crop of new characters, including the title vampire character.

This time we move northwest to Vancouver, British Columbia and Washington state. Sophia herself has been summoned there by her Sire in the wake of three vampires’ untimely murders. Coincidentally, Colin Murphy, a retired Navy SEAL has relocated to the area to clear his mind and live a quiet life. But he winds up learning about the vampire murders, and as the ultimate protector of the innocent he becomes involved in the case in order to bring to justice those responsible. As they cross paths and work together, we realize that they have their own history, which presents a challenge. But they will have to work through that to locate the killer in time before he hurts anyone else.

These vampires were children of Raphael, and the Vampire Lord is none too happy to know of their demise. He doesn’t trust Sofia, and Cyn wants to help solve the case as well, which only exacerbates his concern for her safety and the unpredictability of the outcome. But if we know Cyn, we know she is committed to the job and will face whatever danger there may behead on. But this time around, she may have bitten of more than she can chew.

One of the reasons I enjoy this series is that there’s a lot of focus on the mystery component, and while there’s definitely a strong presence of romance, it’s not overbearing a lot of the time. Well, for this book that’s gone out the window. Sure, there’s a mystery but the romantic melodrama is laid on thick. This is because we’re not dealing with one couple now, but two. And that’s just too much for me. I just wasn’t invested in Sophia and Colin’s situation in the least and I’ll outright admit that I skimmed a lot of their scenes.

I was hoping for the books to get away from the missing women trend that it had going, and it did do that here. But it still wasn’t enough to create a compelling enough storyline. I guess D.B. Reynolds stuck with it before because it was a strength.

I would have recommended you skip this book altogether, but there are a few major plot developments that are worth reading. I can say that I was able to skim through certain scenes with little consequence to getting the big picture, so if you feel that urge, go with it. You’ll be fine.

And of course, a VNF review of this series isn’t complete without my comment on the cover…which is still pretty bad. I feel like they get worse and worse. The male model’s pose looks completely unnatural, awkward, and so NOT badass for a supposed Navy Seal. And once again you can barely read the text at the top of the book thanks to the trees. Whoever designed it obviously skipped the “contrast” chapter in their graphic design book. It’s ONLY one of the major principles, but what do I know!

So yeah, this book was a bit of a let down, but it wasn’t enough to deter me from continuing with the series, especially knowing that Duncan gets his turn next!

Even though this book is titled Sophia, it is as much about Cyn and Raphael as it is about her, and it was fantastic. I enjoyed the steamy relationship between the scrumptious Colin and the delightful Sophia, but the passion between Raphael and Cyn was sizzling. I LOVED it! There was also a professional relationship and friendship that developed between Cyn and Colin, much to Raphael’s dismay that made for a very interesting part of the story. Lots of action and Duncan, terrific dialogue and Duncan, and revenge…vampire style…SWEET! For a character I really didn’t care for in the first book, Duncan has really grown on me. Just an all around terrific series. The author continues to bait the reader and leaves you with an ending wondering what she has in store for MY Duncan! I can hardly wait.

This book was a little harder to get through. I didn't feel the passion and excitement that I felt with the others, although there were a few wonderful moments. Cyn and Raphael are like newlyweds trying to figure out how to live together. Sophia's story isn't fleshed out enough for me.

This is the first book I have read in this series, but it definitely won't be the last. An enjoyable addition to the vampire genre. If you enjoy vampire novels, you can't go wrong with this one.

Sophia is a beautiful but deadly vampire, living the decadent life in Brazil. When her sire, Lucien, calls her back to Vancouver, she has no choice but to obey. When she arrives, she learns that Lucien has disappeared and three of his progeny have been murdered.

Raphael is the Vampire Lord of the western US. He travels to Washington when his vampires are murdered. Together, Sophia and Raphael have to find who is killing vampires and exact revenge.

This book has everything that you want in a vampire novel. Romance, handsome men and beautiful women, amazing sex, long-lost love and revenge. Add in militia-type rednecks and you have a thoroughly enjoyable book.

My only complaint is the continuous use of "my Cyn" when Lord Raphael refers to his mate, Cynthia. After about the 100th time I read this, I was ready to gag. Cynthia is a kick-ass woman, not a dog or slave!

Sophia is one of Lucian's 'children', and he has disappeared. Vampires are being attacked too. Sophia has to find Lucian.

Rafael is concerned about the attacks so has to move to another of his houses to get things sorted.

This book is two stories in one really, it's about Sophia meeting up with old flame Colin, and Rafael and Cyn.

I wasn't that keen on Sophia if I'm honest, I preferred the Rafael side in this story. I did listen to the audible book, the accent the narrator did for Sophia was a little annoying that maybe why I couldn't take to her

Still a good book though. Looking forward to Duncan's book.

I'm just gonna give this a 5 star just because there is so much of Cyn's and Raphael's page time. I would never have guess Reynolds will still continue writing on them. I thought they got their HEA and be done with. If you are wondering who are Cyn and Raphael, they are the couple from Book 1 and 2. Although the story of Sophia and Colin started in this book 4, almost half the book is about Cyn and Raphael, so if you miss the book 1 and 2, I felt this book will not be as good.

Sophia is a lone vampire residing in Central America and was summoned back to Vancouver by her Sire, Lord Lucien. Only to find a letter left by her Sire when she arrived. It details on tragedy happening to the vampire community and he won't be available to sort out the mess. This lead Sophia into Lord Raphael's territory.

Colin was an ex-SEAL residing in Northwest coast as a local enforcer. He walked into an aftermath of vampire's mate being brutalized and was thus engage into the investigation of vampire being targeted for killing.

I grew suspicious of the way the story between Sophia and Colin going to develop because they only have half the page time and Cyn and Raphael practically steal the show (they even have more sex scene, mind you). So when Sophia and Colin first met in Raphael's compound, we were told that they had a history a decade ago, I was like 'okay, that will definitely speed things up'. Their history was definitely not mentioned at all in previous books. Ten years ago, they were an item and Sophia took an opportunity to fake her death in order to leave Colin because of her being a vampire. Colin didn't knew her identity back then. I'm not sure I like their relationship because Sophia is obviously an alpha female who is rising to take over Lord Lucien's throne. While, Colin is not a beta hero either. So their vibe felt off to me.

Now back to my favorite couple Cyn and Raphael. Can they be even more lovely together? Sometimes I forgotten that Raphael is a vampire because he act overtly protective of his mate is like a behavior of a shapeshifter. Any beings, human or otherwise who dare touch Cyn will suffered from wrath of Lord Raphael. That guy can basically cause small earthquake, I kid you not. He is the most scariest vampire hero that I came across.

Sometime Cyn can be so stubborn that I wanted her to stop acting like she is bulletproof, but maybe that is what she is. I'm not fond of reading them arguing the security issue over and over again. But after every argument, they kiss and make up and that's so sweet.

Since the vamps are asleep during daytime, this give some time for the humans, ie. Cyn and Colin to form a good partnership, along with Robbie, the human assign by Raphael as Cyn's bodyguard. I like Cyn and Colin interaction and how clueless he can be of vampires behavior and rules. Marco and Preston, the two vampires who belong to Raphael, are dead, killed by humans while they are asleep during the daylight. Cyn assist in the investigation along with Colin and Robbie during the day, and Raphael and his vamps hunt down the killers during the night. I'm excited to find out how Raphael is gonna kill the humans and I don't feel sick at all.

If you are fans of Cyn and Raphael, you should definitely grab this book. They are more in love than ever and you can see how committed they are to each other. I hope Reynolds will continue with their story because I doubt I will ever gonna read another vampire that is gonna top Raphael on the badass level.
