Margit Sandemo was a Norwegian-Swedish historical fantasy author. She has been the best-selling author in the Nordic Countries since the 1980s, when her novel series of 47 books, The Legend of the Ice People, was published. She has also written many other book series such as Häxmästaren and Legenden om Ljusets rike.

W czwartym tomie Sagi o Ludziach Lodu przechodzimy do następnego pokolenia. Tym razem akcja skupi się na Taraldzie, Cecylii i Sunnivie (dzieci Daga i Liv oraz córka Sol) oraz pewnej dziewczynce o imieniu Irja. Ona jest trochę odizolowana od swojej rodziny, niezdarna, zahukana, niedowartościowana przez rodziców oraz nieszczególnie ładna. Dzieci bawią się ze sobą, a jakiś czas później Irja zaczyna pracować w domu Silje i Tengela. Mijają lata, jest 1620 rok. Irja ma 19 lat i poczuła, że zakochała się w Taraldzie. Jednak dosyć intensywnie iskrzy pomiędzy Taraldem, a Sunnivą.

Ten tom już nie podobał mi się tak bardzo jak poprzedni. Tutaj było za dużo takiego użalania się nad sobą po stronie Irji. Bo Tarald mnie nie chce, chlip, chlip, co ja w życiu osiągnęłam, kto będzie mnie opłakiwał, śmierć to najlepsze co może mnie spotkać, chlip, chlip. Z drugiej strony pada głupota od strony Silje do Sunnivy - możecie się pocałować, pochodzić za rękę, ale nie przekraczajcie granicy. Gdyby takie rady były na co dzień stosowane to byśmy nie mieli obecnie niżu demograficznego. Bardzo naiwne podejście doświadczonej przez życie kobiety. Sunniva - słoneczko rodziny, jeśli nie jest w centrum uwagi i nie zrobi histerii to można uznać dzień za stracony. W zasadzie z ulgą przyjęłam jej los. Dopiero potem się coś w fabule poprawiło, ale pierwsza połowa była trochę wymęczona przeze mnie.

Takie niemądre, ale wciągające. Najgorsze są cliffhangery: chcę się dowiedzieć, które wnuczę ma żółte oczy, i co wyrośnie ze złego dziecka. Mimo wykrzykników narracji.

Jako nastolatka, totalnie fanowałabym Irje.

(Choć błędy ortograficzne w tym tomie trochę bolały i prawie mnie pokonały.)

Naprawdę uwielbiam świat wykreowany przez Margit Sandemo, pełen jest jasno określonego dobra i zła, chociaż i tutaj trafi się czasem niespodzianka, do tego bohaterowie są zazwyczaj chodzącymi archetypami, także przez strony każdego domu dosłownie się przelatuje.
Mimo to, zgodnie z przeczytanymi opiniami, słusznie spodziewałem się, że historia przedstawiona w "Tęsknocie" nie przypadnie mi w całości do gustu. Chociaż miejscami trafiały się ciekawe wydarzenia, np. krótki powrót zarazy, wstęp do rozterek sercowych Cecylii i pożegnanie z pierwszym pokoleniem, to patrząc całościowo, tomik był niesamowicie niezbalansowany, więc często trafiało się na nudne wątki fabularne. Irja jest cudowną bohaterką, ale historia jej i Taralda (i Sunnivy) dłużyła się i nie angażowała, a służalczość dziewczyny wobec wszystkich dookoła była zwyczajnie przykra. Chociaż zgaduję, że to akurat wina epoki, w jakiej osadzono historię (~1625 rok).

Summa summarum, najsłabszy dotąd tom Sagi o Ludziach Lodu, jednak zapowiada wątek Cecylii i Alexandra, więc już zacieram ręce przed czytaniem.

Tarald and Sunniva of the Ice people and Yrja Mattiasdaughter are all born within days of each other and along with Tarald's little sister Cecilie they grow up as best friends and compete everything they possibly can.
Sunniva is beautiful, vain and completely self centered.
Yrja is deformed, plain, dutiful and good hearted.
Tarald is handsome, young and stupid.
Despite everyone's warnings and objections too intermarriage between the Ice people, Tarald gets Sunniva with child and the curse strikes them, which leaves Yrja to raise Kolgrim.

Nie podobał mi się ten tom ><. Pierwszy raz, odkąd zaczęłam tą serię totalnie się w trakcie pogubiłam, a do tego nie polubiłam w ogóle bohaterów z nowego pokolenia. Przyznaję, że poza tym momentem, kiedy oficjalnie żegnamy Tengela i Silje (mocna rzecz, kompletnie się nie spodziewałam!) książka niesamowicie mi się ciągnęła i dłużyła, a przecież to jest takie cieniutkie..

Yearning
Irja Mattiasdatter was heavy and deformated by illness. People laughed at her and called her names mostly "teasel". Irja had much serious problem: she unhappily loved rich and reckless Tarald, son of baron Dag Meiden and Liv of Ice People. Tarald was interested only in his beautiful cousin Sunniva. But their relationship was threatened by serious consequences because of curse laid on the family.

Den fjärde boken i Serien om Isfolket. Längtan som den heter på Svenska.
Hinner inte alltid klicka in de böcker jag hör under tiden jag jobbar, och sen glömmer jag det när jag kommer hem.

Jeg vet ikke helt hva jeg skal si. Jeg var helt oppslukt i boka kunne ikke legge den fra meg. Til og med på skolen. Jeg skulle ønske Tengel og Silje ikke daua. Alt gikk så fort og plutselig var det krig og de tok alle gutta.

Arvingen ('The Heir') is the 4th book in the Legend of the Ice People and it is a whirlwind of emotions. The story is both so sad, so happy, so life affirming and so utterly heartbreaking in many places in many ways.

Yrja is the daughter of a nearby farmer, and hopelessly in love with her childhood friend Tarald, the son of Liv and Dag of the ice People. Despite her physcial handicap and her emotional turmoil, she's such a warm character. She's loving and caring, she wears her heart on her sleeve and yet she can't see most of her own worth. I don't know if it is possible to read this book and not feel for her, it isn't for me at least.

This book follows Yrja and her life as she gradually becomes more and more intertwined with the Ice People family, but it also has chapters detaling the lives of some of the other of Silje and Tengel's grandchildren, particularly Tarald's sister Cecilie. It's also a book that is sort of the end of an era, something that will make sense to you when you've read it.

Unlike the first three books, there's not a whole lot of setting-development in this book, which is probably because it takes place almost exclusively in the same place as the previous book, namely at the family's two homes; Lindealléen and Gråstensholm. This also means that the narrative's biggest weakness, the tendency to tell and not show, is more obvious, though not so much that it bothered me. The historical aspects of the book are getting very important now though, since the family have started to spread itself across Scandinavia - okay, for now it is only from Norway to Denmark - and even to Germany, even the family's steady everyday lives on their farms will eventually get tangled up in what's going on in the big, big world. And I love it. I don't know if the historical points are all 100% accurate, but they work nevertheless. And you can tell that Sandemo has done her research. It helps the book, and the series, that this long family saga intertwines the fantastical elements with a sort of spooky serenity and established historical events. This is one of my favourite things about the series and it is quite prominent in this book.

A lot of things happen in this book, some always make me smile and some always make tears well up in my eyes. Mostly this book fills me with a sort of happiness in my chest, the kind of warmth that seems to coexist with the need for a good cry. It's diffcult for me to explain it right.

The book will likely make you want to cry and little and then laugh a little immediately afterwards. So why aren't you reading it yet?

After the tragic ending from the last book, the series began to focus on the 3rd generation. Grandchildren of Tengel and Silij. Plus a new character Irja who's the same age as Tarald and Cecylia. Now I began to see that fallowing the family bloodline won't be so easy! I felt a need to start noting down names, now that all the significant older characters have children.
The beginning of the story is being told from the perspective of Irja, which was a good way to get to know the new set of characters. The perspective will then switch now and then to other people. The old characters still get some love as well.
I really hated Suvinna, she took after her father. Also Tarald is my 2nd least favourite.
Luckily I enjoyed this book thanks to other great characters. Cecylia and Kolgrim kept up my interest.

As always the ending made me want more. Can't stop reading!

The Satanic Child

The House of Stories has been pleased with three more books from Margit Sandemu's almost endless saga about the People of Ice. This means that it's time for the continuation of the evil and adventurous lives of the children of Silje and Tengel the Good, whose genetic code carries the curse of their ancestor, Tengel the Evil. He sold his soul to the devil, and in each generation of his descendants, one is born with a satanic mark: either beastly or beautiful, but with cat-like eyes that sometimes turn vertical, and with a special ability for witchcraft.

So, in seventeenth-century Norway, two decades have passed since the death of the witch Sul, who was supposed to be burned at the stake, but Tengel managed to give her poison. They are all very different, and there is no one marked by the family curse (or so it seems). Sool's grown-up daughter, Sunniva, who inherited her mother's beauty but not her determination, strength of character, or abilities, falls in love with her cousin, Trald, who is the same age as her. The older generation's warnings about the dangers of marrying within the clan are dismissed by the young couple. The story ends with the announcement of their pregnancy and the request for a marriage. Tengel is furious and demands that the fetus be aborted, while his granddaughter cries and threatens to commit suicide. In the end, the family goes along with the couple, and they all pay dearly for it. In Kolgrim, the soul of an evil ancestor truly takes shape.

Meanwhile, the story of another granddaughter, the lovely Cecilia, who has been invited to serve as a governess for the royal children, unfolds. Sul's brief tenure as governess proves to be a remarkable experience. However, Cecilia soon discovers that life at court is not as idyllic as it seemed from home. The girls' mother disliked her, it was difficult for the Norwegian woman to find friends at the Danish court, and when the news came of the death of Charlotte's grandmother and her husband, whom she loved like her own grandfather, the baby was completely sad. It was then that she met the brilliant court Marquis Alexander Palladin, who listens and sympathizes. Of course, Cecilia fell in love, but wouldn't you? She just doesn't understand whispers and smirks.

Earlier, at home, Tengel, with the help of another grandson, the future medical genius Taray, and a girl from a poor family, Irya, who had been taken in by the family, was fighting an outbreak of plague in the area. Through their selfless efforts, they managed to suppress the outbreak with minimal casualties. Later, the unattractive Iria, who is in love with Tárald, will become the nanny of the demonic child Kolgrím and will replace his mother, while poor Cecilia, who will be explained by her brother-physician Tarjai what is wrong with her chosen one, will make a fool of herself during the Christmas holidays with the local pastor (who is also married, horror-horror). But shh! More to come.

А значит: время продолжения зло- и приключений детей Силье и Тенгеля Доброго, в чей генокод зашито проклятие предка, Тенгеля Злого. Тот продал душу дьяволу и в каждом поколении его потомков рождается один, отмеченный сатанинской печатью: звероподобный или напротив прекрасный, но с кошачьими глазами, зрачок которых порой становится вертикальным, и с особой способностью к ведовству.

Итак, Норвегия, семнадцатый век, со времени смерти ведьмочки Суль, которую должны были сжечь на костре, но Тенгель сумел передать ей яд - прошло два десятка лет, подросло поколение внуков. Все очень разные, отмеченного родовым проклятием нет среди них (это только кажется). Подросшая дочь Суль Суннива, которая унаследовала материнскую красоту, но не решительность, силу характера и способности, влюбляется в кузена-ровесника Таральда. От предостережений старшего поколения о недопустимости браков внутри клана, молодежь, как водится, отмахивается. Заканчивается все объявлением о беременности - пожените нас. Тенгель в ярости и требует вытравить плод, внучка рыдает и грозит самоубийством. В конце концов семья идет у парочки на поводу и все они дорого заплатят за это. В Кольгриме, поистине, воплотится душа злого предка.

Параллельно развивается история другой внучки, милой Сесилии, приглашенной гувернанткой августейших детей, в память о том. как замечательно, хотя и недолго справлялась с этой ролью Суль. Девушка вскоре обнаруживает, что при дворе вовсе не так хорошо, как казалось из дому. Мать девочек невзлюбила ее, друзей у датского двора норвежке не из самых родовитых отыскать оказалось трудно, а с приходом известия о смерти от чумы бабушки Шарлотты и ее мужа, которого любила как родного деда, малышка и вовсе загрустила. Тут-то и встретился ей блестящий придворный маркиз Александр Палладин, который выслушивает и сочувствует. Конечно, Сесилия влюбилась, а вы бы не влюбились? Она просто не понимает шепотков и ухмылок.

Чуть раньше, дома, Тенгель с помощью еще одного внука, будущего гения медицины Тарьяя и девушки из бедной семьи Ирьи, которую семья пригрела у себя, борется со вспышкой чумы в округе. Самоотверженными усилиями ее удается подавить малой кровью. Позже, влюбленная в Таральда неказистая Ирья станет няней демоническому дитяти Кольгриму и заменит ему мать, а бедняжка Сесилия, которой брат-медик Тарьяй объяснит, что не так с ее избранником, наделает на рождественских каникулах глупостей с местным пастором (да к тому же женатым, ужас-ужас). A good and solid little read. In my opinion, this was the best book out of the first four in the series and I had a lot of fun with it.
I really liked the characters, I had a lot of fun with Kolgrim, Yrja and all the other new ones, and I didn’t like it, but I sadly had to say goodbye to some of the OG characters as well.
The only thing holding this book back was its length. I think this could have had a little bit more meat to the bones so to say.
