In 1788 the English Navy landed in Sydney Harbour and assumed control of the surrounding territory establishing a convict settlement under the leadership of Governor Arthur Phillip. The maritime tradition of the original inhabitants was replaced with a new one descended from that of London, its surrounding waterways and the English Coast. In Forgotten Boats of Sydney in the Days of Sail and Oar Daniel Hardie tells the story of the development of a local tradition of sailing on the Harbour and its surrounding beaches form roots in naval, fishing and sporting ancestry. You will hear of the fabled Rosehill Packet, of Butcher boats, the Viking inheritance, Banana Boat Surfboats, Sydney Skiffs and much more. For the artistically minded Daniel Hardie includes images from his Sea Heritage Paintings and the research that underpinned the narrative.
