This vibrant collection presents 145 brief Bengali lyric poems dedicated to the Hindu goddesses Kali and Uma. These poems--many of which are presented here for the first time in English translation--were written from the early eighteenth century up to the contemporary period. They represent the unique Bengali tradition of goddess worship (Saktism) as it developed over this period. Included are forty poems by the most famous of all Sakta poets, Ramprasad Sen (c.1718-1775) and ten lyrics by the renowned 20th-century poet Kaji Najrul Islam. McDermott's lucid introduction places these works in their historical context and shows how images of the goddesses evolved over the centuries. Her lively translations of these poetic lyrics evoke the passion and devotion of the followers of Kali and Uma and shed light on the history and practice of goddess worship.

Stunning collection of poetry. She makes sure to state in the intro that this is not a representative sample of the poetry in this genre. She privileges things which stand out, so it has a tilt towards the violent or scary and the erotic elements. That makes the collection even better in my opinion. It also shows this interesting confluence of tantric, yogic, and bhakti ideas which happened in Bengal from the late 1700s till/through the 1900s. The notes section is EXTREMELY useful for understanding some of the less intuitive mythological references and analogies, and the intro is good to refer to as well, as it gives the social/economic context of many of the poets.

I read this slowly because I knew I wanted to finish this tonight, on Sivaratri. I grew up with pretty mixed imagery about Kali maata and what worshipping her meant. All other gods and goddesses I prayed to felt straightforward and kind, but Siva and Kali always scared me. While I've sought out and found many informative texts about Siva and his many moods, forms, and stories, Kali ma remained a mystery. I was very excited to find this well researched and carefully curated set of poems and explanations detailing more of Kali's legend. This was an informative and easy to follow read. As someone who is especially taken by carnatic and hindustani music, I also enjoyed the detailed appendix which helped me to find some of these songs. Super helpful glossary too.

My relationship with my religion has been incredibly dynamic; shifting, growing, and adapting as I learn more about myself and this world. As a woman, I've held a fascination for female deities and how they exist in a culture that can sometimes struggle to reconcile with womanhood. Reading and learning more about Kali ma - how she is both mistreated and worshipped, fetishized and feared - I am pleasantly surprised with her presence in the canon. I like that we have space and respect for a complex and powerful, if less palatable, woman. Continually surprised and always inspired to seek out more about hinduism.

This is the best collection of Kali poetry I've found. Granted, not every poem's translation works, but the ones that do can stop you in your tracks. And a good selection of poems by some of the great Bengali Goddess poets: Ramprasad, Kamalakanta, Battacharya, and Nasrul Islam, to name the best known. Recommended, if you want to discover the beauty beneath Kali's fearful mask.
