Hawk's Landing

"I have no doubt there are readers who will feel a bit cheated by this story because I didn’t go into why Kit is who she is. Who is it for anyone to question another’s choice? Kit is who she is. We all love gay erotic romance, but I don’t believe we expect an author to justify why a man is gay. For me, the purpose of this story is to allow Kit to be who she is without apologizing or trying to dissect her psyche. I wanted Kit to have a man who would respect and love her. In that, I feel I’ve given Kit the happily-ever-after she would’ve written for herself if she could have. I hope you will fall in love with Kit. I know I did."
Carol Lynne placed that paragraph in the book. While the story isn't completely horrible I do need to make a couple responses to this. Firstly, I think we should laud Carol for breaking new ground in what has become the same old, same old sort of plot for the Cattle Valley series. I'm glad she decided to try a different approach and tackle a subject that doesn't get much attention, that of transgender issues.
BUT...I think it was a mistake not to provide enough background details about Kit. It's not justifying. Kit would have been a much more rounded character had we been given FULL details of the formative process, her self-discovery, the trials and tribulations that led to her realization etc. I don't want to think it was laziness to explore those issues that led to them being neglected, because the excuse given was pretty poor.
Secondly, for someone who write this much GAY romance, it is almost inconceivable that Carol Lynne called this book a GAY romance story, and an affront to transgender people at large. Know the facts, or at least do a little pre-reading before you write Miss Lynne. GAY and TRANSGENDER are NOT synonymous. The trans people have their own letter in LGBT you know. GAY = physical and/or emotional attraction to a member of one's own sex. Transgender indicates that one's body image is not consistent with one's sexual identity and has NOTHING to do with attraction - as many trans will attest to who switch sexes but their GENDER and ATTRACTION remain unaffected. Such as men who undergo transition but still want women sexually.
I found it very irritating that Miss Lynne showed the same level of ignorance as the average Joe/Jane on the street considering this is how she bilks people outta their money...er makes her living. You'd think she would at least have enough respect for the people she writes about to portray them accurately.

That is the Author's Note given in the beginning of this book. And I agree with it 100%. If you are looking for a transgender book that gives a lot of details about why a person is like that, look somewhere else because you won't find it here. This story is about giving Kit the safe, comfortable life she deserves after going through a rough childhood. It's NOT about understanding why Kit is the way she is.
I absolutely loved this book. It's possibly my favorite book out of the whole series. I fell in love with Kit and her low self-esteem. It broke my heart with the way she thought sometimes but I still loved her. I loved Hawk even more because of the way he treated and understood Kit. He never judged her for who she is. He accepted and embraced it.
I loved the direction this book went. At first, we see Hawk accepting Kit and Kit ultimately accepting herself. Then we see Hawk and Kit start to build a relationship with Joey, Rance and Bo. I enjoyed all that. I wished there had been a few more moments with Joey but Bo and Rance accepting Kit made up for that.
Overall, I'll be reading this one again. It'll hold a special place in my heart and I thought Ms. Lynne did a wonderful job giving Kit the HEA she deserved. Recommended :)

I loved Kit and I liked Hawk. I really liked the story but I wish there would have been more time spent with Joey. I don’t even liked kids but I would have enjoyed seeing more of them together with joey. I am sure they will pop up together in future books and I look forward to that.

“Hallelujah and pass the salt!”
Hawk’s Landing….wow, I was so ready for something else. But no, it was more than I could have hoped for. It’s a love story! An acceptance of another, of self, and the healing it brings to the baggage that some people carry.
Kit was not accepted by many as she grew into who she is, be it her school years, or her “minute-did-it” lovers. Even some who live in Cattle Valley were not as accepting of her as they could have been. Guess the “community” still has its’ bigotry too. What a shame. For most of her life she’s been misunderstood. Her mom and cousin Matt, were her only support, until she met Hawk and her best bud, Brac. Awww
But Hawk just wants to meet his son, Joey. Or so he thought. He had no intentions of meeting anyone else accept Bo and Rance, the current parents of his son. Oh, but you can’t run from love. He falls, HARD. So hard that it sets off feelings he didn't know he had...He likes to fluff Kit’s pillows…a lot.
Hawk’s got his childhood baggage too. And it rears its ugly head just to let him know that he needs to get it in check. His life is complicated. He meets resistance and bigotry in CV but confronts it head on...in a peaceful way.
I really liked this story and was so happy to be back in this fictional town again. Wanted it to go on longer. Brac seems to be coming up on the radar in my opinion. But we’ll see. Carol Lynne has made me, once again, a very happy reader. I look forward to the next book. *crosses fingers that there will be another.*

While I enjoyed this story I was left feeling disapointed. I know the story was about Kit and Hawk but I really wanted to read more on Hawk and his son and Bo's feelings to everything. Instead it was just another sex oriented story. Almost like MFM 3some but with only 2 people.
I still love the CV series and hope there will be more to come. But this one is near the bottom of my favorites list. The characters just never grabbed me the way others did.

Loved Kit's character! And I must say, I'm very excited to see the actors from Pirate's Cove getting into the scene. I've been wanting to see more of that since I read Firehouse Heat!

Kit Bromley, of 'Hawk's Landing' by Carol Lynne, is unique, not only because she is such a kind, loving person, but because she is transgender, male to female. I've liked Kit since she was introduced in a previous book, 'Ghost From The Past'. She came to Cattle Valley in hopes of finding a place where she could live openly and honestly, without ridicule. When Mario was met with opposition after deciding to give her a job, his reply was: “Besides, if Kit can't find a place to call home in Cattle Valley what hope does she have?” I was proud of Mario for supporting her, but extremely disappointed when other Cattle Valley residents shunned her. Personally, I'm delighted that Carol Lynne decided to give Kit the opportunity to tell her story, which, in turn, provided us with an opportunity to gain a greater understanding of what it means to be transgender.
I've adored Kit since she was first introduced into the series. Kit has a beautiful soul and a determination not readily apparent. I admired her bravery and strength in her battle to be herself, to live on her own terms, and yet retain her gentle, loving nature. The pain of rejection with which Kit was constantly bombarded broke my heart. She'd been disappointed so many times, that she'd just about given up on finding anyone who would love her for herself, a love which she definitely deserved; however, I continued to cheer her on.
Even though he did not thrill me at first, Hawk, who is bi-sexual, eventually proved to be a good match, able to accept and love Kit for the beautiful person she was. It amazed me that Kit was even able to attempt a relation with Hawk after all she'd been through; however, she found an openness and honesty in Hawk, which personally I thought bordered on crudeness. Although I wasn't fond of his chauvinism, Kit interpreted it as admiration and that's all that was important. I must admit that Hawk won me over later when he began to show his softer side, his desire to meet and know his son, his support of Kit's right to be herself, defending her so steadfastly, demanding the respect that she deserved, thereby giving people an opportunity to know what a wonderful person she was. Eventually, he was even willing to give up his whole life style in order to ensure that she would be safe and happy. He proved that she was what was most important to him and was willing to do whatever it took to have her with him.
'Hawk's Landing' wasn't my favorite book in the Cattle Valley series, but it's an important story and I commend Carol for taking on a very controversial subject, which is often misunderstood, even in the GBLT community. Ultimately, whether or not Carol captured all the nuances of being transgender, she followed through with one of the most important themes in all of her stories, the important part of a person, the part we treasure, is what resides on the inside, not merely what is seen on the outside. Ultimately, isn't that all that matters?

I truly do applaud Carol Lynne for adding a transgender character to her series. I have a couple of transgender and one intersex friend at the LGBT Center, and as the librarian, I'm having a hard time in finding any transgender fiction at all. And it's important - fiction allows us to read about people we can identify with, in a variety of situations we might never experience. If you can never find books with people "like you" (WHATEVER that means for you) it's very discouraging.
I'm basically ok with the story arc, although it's seriously full of both romance and M/M cliches. The insta-love between Hawk and Kit was so over the top, and the author borrowed pretty much line for line from her M/M sex scenes, except for Hawk's obsession with Kit's boobs. But the biggest WTF for me was how the story jumped from one intense emotional scene to another. And then to California (I had to read the page twice to figure it out). And then back to CV. It felt like there were pages missing.
But it does deal with a transwoman who has elected to not have the full monty of gender reassignment surgery (I hate that phrase, it sounds like a job transfer), and how she might deal with a romantic and sexual relationship with a man. So I give it three stars for a good start, and I would love to see this expanded, with Kit's backstory, more on the CV characters' attitudes in dealing with transpeople.
There really is a gulf between the LGs AND the Bs and most certainly the Ts. At the risk of trivializing the situation, if you are a transwoman who is a lesbian, or a transman attracted to men, you've got a bar to go to...but a transperson who is attracted to the opposite sex is, by definition, heterosexual, and they can literally be taking their life in their hands going to straight bars. Or any kind of public social setting. It's a confusing and painful situation, because the other gender/orientation-queer people don't welcome them, and share their strength and experience with discrimination.
Now THAT would be an awesome story arc for Cattle Valley. Something about how the CV core characters recognize Kit's isolation and really try to understand her. Not just as another "we love everyone" character, but as someone who has shared the journey of finding who they are and who they want to love.
Ok, rant over. But it's something that really ticks me off, and I have no idea how to address it in real life. I'd love a "what if" scenario in a story...

I have to admit the number one reason I read this book was that I saw it tagged as transgender. I was curious what was the difference between that and the gay romance that I typically read. The blurb describes Kit as a man who has had a breast augmentation. I knew what I was getting for the most part. A little series research informed me that Cattle Valley, Wyoming is a very GLBTGQ (menage) friendly place. It has become a bit of a utopia for those seeking its brand of normalcy.
Cattle Valley may be the perfect place for many but Kit has yet to find her place. She looks around and sees the happy same sex couples and knows that that isn’t the place for her. Gay men like men. Kit may have a penis but she is not a man. She is a difference that is still trying to find her place in this world.
Hawk’s trip to Cattle Valley is something he looking forward to yet there is some anxiety behind the visit. He wants more than anything to see and get to know the son that he recently found out he fathered. Meeting Kit is a bonus to this trip he never expected. Hawk is attracted to both men and women. Kit is a vibrant woman wrapped in a perfect package just for Hawk.
This novella really worked for me. The dating struggles that Kit faces as a woman that is equipped as she is seemed accurate and so sad. Hawk’s sexual preferences are so tailor made for Kit. The obvious struggles are not what the had to get past for their happily ever after. Very sexy romance and I look forward to reading more of Carol Lynne’s Cattle Valley tales.
Hawk’s Landing works as a stand-alone. This is the first book I have read set in this world.

By far my favorite book... It felt like I had just started the book when I looked and noticed I was 70% of the way through this book. The story flowed and I loved how Hawk accepted Kit for who she was and worked so fiercely to protect her from hurt and harm.
The storyline with Bo, Rance, and Joey could have been expanded on a bit, but I'm really glad the focus of the story was on Kit and Hawk. Hawk found everything he could have ever wanted in Kit and loved how she didn't try to fake who she was to make her path any easier... she might not put herself out there much because she knows how unaccepting the world can be of those different from the norm, even in Cattle Valley. The townspeople doesn't seem to understand transgender people and seem uncomfortable around her, even referring to her as a him until they are corrected but eventually they get to know her and warm up to her.
I can't explain the love I have for Kit for not trying to fit who she is into a box and for being so genuine and loving. She makes me proud and I can only hope people will get a better understanding of transgendered people from this book! I wish it had been longer!

My biggest issues with this book was the way Kit was portrayed. The character came off as being weak, and for someone who went through what she did in life, that didn't sit well with me. I didn't like her desperation when it came to Hawk, and overall the sex scenes for me were badly written and tacky.
I didn't understand the instant attraction between the two. Love at first glance has never been a winner with me. The terms that this author used annoyed me when it came to Kit. I felt like the author was writing about something she knew very little about. I have read many books with trans characters, and this one wasn't up to my usual standards.
The last thing that I did not like about the book was the whole kid thing with Hawk. That felt like it was only written in an attempt to carry the book along.
This is the first book I have read by Ms Lynne. I don't let one bad book sour me from any author. I will try another, and seen how I feel then.

I really don't know how to rate books from this series. They are very readable but they incorporate the worst of the romance genre. You get insta love. You get male/female pairings just that both have willies - I know that this book is different because Kim was transgendered, but other books in this series have a similar feel even if both romantic leads are 'traditional' gay men. There are good characters in these books but I feel that the whole thing needs to be fleshed out more, characters & storyline, to make the books in this series really good. I'll probably keep on reading the books but I'm always left hungry ... there isn't quite enough story to satisfy.

So the complete lack of plot, conflict or characterzation might well have me finally breaking up with Carol Lynne. A supremely lazy offering from this author. Which is a shame because as always the premise is really interesting but Carol Lynne just can't seem to parlay that into a decent story. Sex connected by banal chit chat yes, intersting character driven story with hawt sex, no. And that's been the cas ewith the last few of hers I have read.

I have to give props to Carol Lynne for creating this very diverse series; everyone and their mama is included! This is my first transgender read and I enjoyed it very much. That cover model is gorgeous. I wonder if she's really transgender? I liked Hawk and Kit together. I could understand Kit's insecurities and it was nice to see that her mother was supportive. I would have liked more time with Hawk and his son getting to know each other, but other than that, enjoyable read.

I feel like Carol Lynne is back. I have been disapointed by a lot of the last book but with this I have my CL faith back! I fell in love with Kit and really liked Hawk even though he is a bit cave man-ish (grabbing Kits boobs in public? ick..

This has now become the best book in the series thus far, for me. If you're looking for a good non-angsty or dramatic book, that will not have you bored to death, then this would be perfect.

Wow! Just Wow!
This is not only my first Carol Lynne story but my first transgender story to boot, and what an amazing story to start with.
I have to touch on the note from Carol at the start of the book. She explains how some may be left feeling cheated over her not giving too much detail in the "Why Kit is who she is."
This is where I am torn. I completely understand what Carol is saying about not needing to justify why Kit is the way she is, and honestly, the story really didn't need Kit's full history, as this isn't Kit's story, I do think to have some more background, some of her trials and tribulations that brought her to the woman sh is now is what would have taken this book from great to totally epic.
That being said, that would have changed the whole dynamic of the story, it would have been more about Kit's self-discovery instead of how she met and fell in love with Hawk, and that would have totally sucked. Perhaps Kit can get a story all about her earlier years and the transformation.
But until then, let's get on with This story.
I love this story for so many reasons.
Kit has been dealing with narrow-minded people for so long that her self-esteem has taken quite a blow, it's truly heartbreaking at moments how she thinks of herself. Kit sticks to herself, the seeming open town of Cattle Valley may be mostly accepting, but it still has its fair share of jerks.
Hawk is . . . . incredible.
While being extremely wealthy, Hawk didn't have the best start in life after his mother passed at a young age and he was sent to live with his dad, once learning he has a son, Joey, he packs up and heads to Cattle Valley with the soul purpose of getting to know him.
He's one of the rich playboy types until he walks into The Gym and his eyes land on Kit. From the second he see's her, his thoughts are of nothing but 100% acceptance (and protectiveness and boobs lol) of her as a person, not a gender and this is where Kit flourishes.
I love how Hawk pulls Kit out of her shell little by little as they both fall hard and fast as these two heat up your kindles and get to know each other. Speaking of getting to know people, I love the interactions with Hawk, Kit, Hawks son Joey and his daddies, Rance and Bo, and of course, Brac. I just really wish it was longer so that their relationships could have expanded.
All in all, this is an alluring story of self-acceptance and discovery, mending some old wounds and of course, a beautiful love story that will leave you begging for more.

This book--much like Two-Spirit Ranch, another contemporary quasi-Western that doesn't entirely know if it's m/m or trans f/cis m -- is not, in a word, good. The author has clearly done no research about life as a trans woman (for instance, she believes that you can't get on hormones until you've gotten "the surgery" which is literally backwards) and usually writes m/m.
But if you are starving for trans rep in steamy romance, here's a book! It's got some redeeming qualities. The setting of Cattle Valley, an isolated all-gay farming community, is a cute and charming idea that the author has clearly milked (sorry) for 23 books, building up a stable (sorry) of comfortable supporting characters. The sex isn't terrible, mostly, and the book's heart is in the right place.

Although this story was interesting and different, it was not my cup of tea. I only read it because I didn't want to skip any books in the series. I couldn't get into the MCs, Kit and Hawk. The insta-love was too over the top, the relationship moved way too fast. Kit was way too trusting of someone she just met before getting to know him. I wasn't sure what to make of Hawk either. I liked her actor friend and am looking forward to his story.

I am not sure what to say. I think this book and most of the series hasn't aged well. Having a trans character needs a bit more research than I think the author has done. Not the best.

A completely different twist to the Cattle Valley series. The readers following CV were introduced to Kit in the last book and should not have been surprised with her story. Kit is a transgender, and even living in a town like Cattle Valley with the majority of the residents are either Gay or Lesbian, she "sticks" out for being different. Although she's been in town for four months, she's been limited to going to work at The Gym, her home and the grocery store. She's used to the staring and the whispering since she was a teenager.
Gabriel "Hawk" Hawkins had personal business in Cattle Valley and decided to make the long drive from Malibu, CA to Cattle Valley, WY on his motorcycle. Recently he had found out about having a son and would like to meet him. Joey is a 2 1/2 year old little boy and the "adopted" son to Bo and Rance. As parents to Joey, Bo and Rance are very leary of the wealthy Playboy, Hawk. Temporarily staying in CV, Hawk needed to release the tension he's been feeling and needed to get a work out at The Gym. There was instant attraction to Kit, with her blonde hair, big beautiful eyes and her perfect-sized breasts. He was completely aware that Kit was a transgender and had not problem with it - he's a bisexaul man who's attracted to both sexes.
As a short story, the reader can't help but to want more from this story. There were so many unanswered questions and would have wanted the author to elaborate more on some situations. She provided enough to make this story actually work and an interesting read. Ms. Lynne was able to write this story without making transgender being the main focus. Yes, Kit is a woman who has struggled living her life trapped in a man's body and have suffered through the prejudices that came with the choices she made. But it was nice to read about a person like Hawk, who accepts the other for who they are on the inside, as well as who they are on the outside.
Great character in Kit and could appreciate what she and others like her must go through to live a "normal" life. Would have enjoyed the story to be longer, but all in all a great quick read. Very interesting view in the life of a transgender. I must say the past few books in this series have improved in terms of writing and theme.

This is more for a 2.5
I'm kinda disappointed with Hawk's Landing. This had such a good premise. It's too bad it didn't reached my expectations.
Hawk's in Cattle Valley to get to know his kid, Joey. What he doesn't expect, is to find Kit, a transsexual woman, whom stoles his heart.
Okay, until here is okay. Hawk is hot. (Look at the cover, and you'll know what I'm talking about). Kit is interested however, uncertain.
As the book goes by, their relationship grows. They have a lot of monkey sex, he sees his kid (what, twice?) and that's just it, til they go to Malibu.
What I didn't liked (besides the lack of action) was:
First: Hawk went to meet his kid. The boy appeared 4 times in the whole book, I guess. I would have liked more interaction between them.
Second: Kit's self depreciation and low self-esteem. Everything that happens with people around you is your fault? Please...
Third: The lack of action. This was just so steady. Slow. Like a sea without waves. Bring on the action!!
To finish, I want to say. This isn't a BAD book, but IMO wasn't GREAT!. Many people will love. I just couldn't.

This might be a bit SPOILERish, but I won't hide it. You're reading at your own risk.
Okay, so I suppose I could go into this review in one of two ways; either going on about how it was basically a story about a transgender person who ended up being swept off her feet by someone with a fixation to chicks with dicks OR I could say it was a nice, if extremely simplified story of a transgender person finding love an acceptance.
Knowing transgendered people, I'm a bit... I don't know. There was a lack of conflict, this book would have been so much better if there had been actual conflict and about hundred pages more. Now it was just scratching the surface in a way that didn't really leave me that satisfied.
Okay, so Hawk is pretty openminded and he's bisexual and all, but does it really need to revolve around Kit's boobs so much? It was bordering on obsession and I didn't like it at all.
Also, not ALL bisexual men like transsexual women and find them extremely hot. That annoyed me a lot in this book. So maybe Kit is just SO AMAZING, but...just no.
All in all the book was guaranteed, easy-reading Cattle Valley material, but it could've been so much better. I wouldn't recommend it to my transgendered friends without a serious word of warning on the portrayal of the relationship of the main characters.

I love love love Kit; she was so sweet! I loved how protective Rio was of her and then Hawk, he was so protective and possessive and proud to be with her. I love that. This is the first trans book I've ever read and I fell in love with the premise and I'm gonna look for more of them. I can't imagine the life she'd lead up until finding Cattle Valley, I wish there really was such a place; one that accepted people so graciously and let them all be themselves and love who they want to love, that would just be so amazing!
And Hawk, I appreciated that he wanted to get to know his son, I didn't know how I would feel about since I knew how much Bo and Rance loved him. Heck, the whole town did. But, he'll fit in perfectly with the family.
I just love this whole series. Can't wait to read more!
