My Queer Life

Rate this book
My Queer Life is kind of an audio scrapbook, a collection of snapshots -- in words -- of how Michael sees life. From childhood (he was convinced Jesus was going to come snatch him up into the clouds) to his struggles as a fashioned-challenged young gay man (off to school I'd go looking for all the world like some demented golf pro in miniature) to an awkward sexual encounter which gives new meaning to good clean fun to his growing confusion with the evolving queer world wherein gay men long to be soccer dads rather than Daddies and lesbians date men because guys are a lot simpler. Through it all two things remain constant: Michael's laugh-out-loud musings' and Roger, his 110 pound Labrador who has taken up permanent residence in Michael's bed.

Ford, a two-time Lambda Literary award winner, makes his audio debut with 16 selections taken from his three previous humor collections (ALEC BALDWIN DOESN'T LOVE ME and THAT'S MR. FAGGOT TO YOU and IT'S NOT MEAN IF IT'S TRUE). This buoyantly funny sampler platter should encourage new fans to grab all three acerbic volumes and leave longtime fans wondering when the wealth of remaining stories will be recorded. Ford's wry reading of the material is a deadpan delight. There is sustained, mounting hilarity when Ford and a female friend spot a fireman at a music store; their disagreement over his possible sexuality accelerates to body checks and shoplifting allegations to a security guard. Other comic monologues polished to a gem-like sheen include Ford's mock-rivalry with Kim Basinger ("the human equivalent to cotton candy") for Alec Baldwin's affections, his dismay at lesbian friends switching to men and his concern over gay friends adopting children. He proposes they sell shares on babies like houses on Fire Island and concludes, "If it's true that your parents don't make you gay, then we have to assume that the majority of these children being born and raised by queer parents will grow up to be straight. Are we really ready for that kind of disappointment?"
