Jesus' first recorded sermon in the Bible is a blueprint for being happy here on earth. And though His definition contains no prescriptions for acquiring cars, homes, or savings, it does require transformation and obedience. MacArthur examines Jesus' timeless definition of happiness, and explains that our reward for following Jesus' plan is citizenship in the kingdom of God- and an abiding joy that can never be taken away. John F. MacArthur, Jr. was a United States Calvinistic evangelical writer and minister, noted for his radio program entitled Grace to You and as the editor of the Gold Medallion Book Award-winning MacArthur Study Bible. MacArthur was a fifth-generation pastor, a popular author and conference speaker, and served as pastor-teacher of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California beginning in 1969, as well as President of The Master’s College (and the related Master’s Seminary) in Santa Clarita, California.
I’m a long-standing reader of John MacArthur’s books—and a longtime listener of his sermons. He accurately shares with his audience what the Bible says. He forgoes his own opinions to ensure people will learn God’s Word. He’s a stickler for proper hermeneutics. He also helps the reader understand what the Bible means for the individual disciple of Christ.
That being said, if you’re looking to gain clear, concise knowledge of the Beatitudes, then this your resource. Yes, there are plenty of good books on this subject available from Amazon, but MacArthur’s should be at the top of your list. He will motivate you to adjust your attitude in order to embody each of the Beatitudes.
Fascinante libro, en el mundo se cree que no hay felicidad siendo pobre, llorando, siendo manso, teniendo hambre, siendo perseguido; pero sobre la base de la Biblia este libro te explica lo contrario.
As always, Dr. MacArthur delivers a magnificent exposition on the Beatitudes. He thoroughly explains the historical and linguistic background of each of them. He also helps us reflect on whether or not we are Kingdom citizens now. Bravo.
Jesus recognized the potential problem of a easy believism as indicated in John 8:30-31, he gave us the Sermon on the Mount. That addresses our heart issue. MacArthur does a wonderful job in the progression of the Beatitudes. It is not after about what men can do but what men are. Because what flows from the heart, is the motive, and the good works that are by faith in not of our own. I was surprised that the Sermon on the Mount is the best means of evangelism but when you think about it, a life lived broken in spirit, mourning over sin, Mercy received, mercy given, thirst and a hunger for righteouness, peacemaker to bring the lost to the Lord would only mean that we have denied self and live a life totally for the Lord. Each blessings is described with scripture. I had one issue with the peacemaker aspect of the teaching but it was minor. A great and reflective read that will check your heart and move you closer to the heart of God.
Encouraging and convicting. I think this is a must read book for every church member. We all need to grapple with the truth of the our Lord's great sermon - He alone is the prince of preachers.
