First the school bus gets a flat tire, and then Mrs. Kormel is totally lost in the middle of nowhere! Mrs. Kormel is the weirdest bus driver in the history of the world, and she's driving everyone crazy! Perfect for reluctant readers and word lovers alike, Dan Gutman's hugely popular My Weird School series has something for everyone. Don't miss the hilarious adventures of A.J. and the gang.
The author of over 80 books in a little over a decade of writing, Dan Gutman has written on topics from computers to baseball. Beginning his freelance career as a nonfiction author dealing mostly with sports for adults and young readers, Gutman has concentrated on juvenile fiction since 1995. His most popular titles include the time-travel sports book Honus and Me and its sequels, and a clutch of baseball books, including The Green Monster from Left Field. From hopeful and very youthful presidential candidates to stunt men, nothing is off limits in Gutman's fertile imagination. As he noted on his author Web site, since writing his first novel, They Came from Centerfield, in 1994, he has been hooked on fiction. "It was fun to write, kids loved it, and I discovered how incredibly rewarding it is to take a blank page and turn it into a WORLD."
Gutman was born in New York City in 1955, but moved to Newark, New Jersey the following year and spent his youth there.
this book speak about the school bus's woman. She is the escort of the student that has to bring them too school. A day had a text. In the morning mrs. Kormel pass to their house to bring them to school. During this voyage happeneed a lot of things, as a flat tire, they go to the nude kid's house, Ryan ate hie seat cushion and they lost a puppet.
We started reading the books in the My Weird School series by Dan Gutman and Jim Paillot together during storytime, but our oldest started reading ahead into the series on her own and our youngest seemed to lose interest. Occasionally, like with this book, our youngest will express interest and we'll read the story together. Our oldest likes me to read them aloud, even though she's already read the books on her own.
This story features a very strange bus driver who takes the children on a day-long bus ride and a wild adventure. It's a short and funny book and we had a few laughs talking about the plot. We enjoy these stories and have put the next few books in the series on hold at our local library.
In this book A.J and his friends get on the bus. It was show and tell at their school and they had to bring a thing that starts with the letter S. A.J brings in his super hero. They get in the bus and start moving and A.J sticks his toy out the window and he pops the tire. Mrs. Kormel ( the bus driver,) gets out to see what is wrong with the tire. She sees it has popped and tries to call on her phone for help but her phone is dead. It looks like the are going to be stuck for a while. One of A.J's classmates Andrea is so upset because she loves school and they are missing a lot. Will they get to school or will they be stuck. Find out in Mrs. Kormel is not normal.
The second and third graders at my school love these books. They like that they are funny and use words like "shut up", "dumbhead," and "butt" as well as the exaggerated humor, some of which they don't always get. What I like about these books are the many idioms contained within each. It might be fun to make a class book about all the idioms and their meanings contained within each book...and you can also use this time, if you so choose, to address why using the words "shut up," "dumbhead," and "butt" in school are frowned upon.
When the bus gets a flat tire, Mrs. Kormel decides to fix the tire herself. After a crazy bus ride full of adventures, the students finally arrive at school. This book is good for 3rd or 4th graders to read because it is a chapter book but not too overwhelming for them.
Bingle Boo! This is now one of our favs in the series. Made up language, Striker smiths' actuon sequence and finally figuring out why Neil is called "the nude kid" even though he wears clothes. (Spoiler: he is the NEW! kid) Guess that's what we get for ready books out of order.
Aj was getting on the bus to go to school. Aj and his friends were playing with the action figure Striker Smith. After a while they were still driving and they still had people to pick up. Well they were miles and miles away from their house they were in the middle of nowhere. All the girls were scared that they would miss their classes and all the boys were happy. They are missing a lot of things. Aj and his friend were really bored. So they tied Striker Smith to some yarn and threw him out the window he was flying and then he didn't see him. And then their ride was bumpy, the bus driver got out and there was a flat tire.
They tried to find the hole and they found it was Striker Smith's sword. And they took the sword out and they had a little funeral. So Mrs. Kormel was going to call Mr. Klutz but her phone was dead so she couldn’t call him, she said “I am going to fix the flat tire”. Then she fixed the tire and they were back on the road. Meanwhile they mist lunch. And then she got stuck in the ditch. SO she asked the students to go to the back of the bus and push them then they got the bus out. And then they went to the nude kids house and picked him up and they headed to the school and school was over so then they all got back on the bus.
I recommend this book to people who like funny stories. I rate this book a 5 out of 5 because it was really funny and I like this series.
I didn't like this one as much as the other books in this series.
Mrs. Kormel Is Not Normal is about the bus driver and a bus ride to school where everything goes wrong. First, the kids think that the new student they are picking up is a nudist, and then when they finally get to his house it turns out his mom already drove him to school. On the way to school from the new kid's house, A.J. is flying his action figure out the bus window when it goes under the bus and pops a tire and strands the kids.
It was entertaining but I just didn't find it as funny or engaging as some of my other favorites in the series.
Bingle Boo! Are you looking for a summer-time romp with your favorite youngster? This is sure to delight you. I laughed aloud in my public library and learned from nearby children that they enjoyed this as well. Pick it up, remember your own elementary school adventures and misadventures, and be sure to tell those memories with youths you love. I've already marked passages I'll read to my 6-year old nephew.
This is a decent early chapter book series. Each book has a bit of humor and a relatable setting and characters that make them easy for students to engage with.
The storyline was pretty good, but I had to mark it down because AJ and his friends spend part of the bus ride 'educationally' teaching each other swear words. Not appropriate for a book for second graders. Even if that is what they talk about, books don't need to encourage it.
On its own, this book in the series is meh- wacky made up words, ridiculously long bus rides, and rather tame games of telephone. But as an introduction to Neil the nude kid, a character who would appear in every other book in this series after this one, it is outstanding.
