Yay! I finished another workbook in my quest to improve my Spanish and sound more natural.

This workbook does concentrate on conversational aspects of Spanish and it is targeted for intermediate learners. By conversational, I point to both spoken and written correspondence (letters, email, messages, etc.) There are 12 chapters and each chapter has a prototype dialog with English translation on the side, followed by a dozen or more chosen words/phrases/grammar points with numerous examples followed by a whole bunch of exercises.

I have found this book rather helpful with pretty clear explanations and you can gain knowledge of certain aspects of language that you can immediately put to use. I certainly did! However, to set the expectations straight, this book, by itself, is not sufficient to cover many aspects of conversational Spanish having less than 200 pages including the exercises, answers and other appendices. Do I recommend this book? I do! It is worth the little bit of money and time invested. Really, I only wished, it was much longer :)

Please note that while my review refers to the 2nd edition of this book, it also applies to more recent 3rd edition. I've compared them literally page by page and all I can see the new version is printed on a nicer, whiter paper and some exercises that were split on two different pages are located in such as way that all the questions of the exercise are now on one page. The content is the same.

Lo importante es practicar... This workbook is especially helpful for learning common words and phrases that don't translate literally. I had to stop half way through and review subjunctive forms that I should have already known, so it does presume some basic Spanish competency. It won't make you perfect, and it's not a substitute for practicing with a teacher or a fluent Spanish speaker... but it's better than nothing.

(Coming soon from McGraw Hill: the "Practice is Better than Nothing" series.)

Pretty good practice but not great for instruction. There are a few phrases taught but it the most interesting stories and very little help with grammar
