A beautiful no-nonsense marine, one by-the-book ruggedly handsome homicide detective, and the case that may well give them eternal bliss or eternal rest, can they trust in each other long enough to find out which it will be?
Fallon Maddox is reunited with her family the day they bury her father. She has no idea that coming home will be the beginning of an adventure she may not survive and even if she does, her life will never be the same.
Ian Cavanaugh is a homicide detective who is wrapped up in a case that may not be as simple as it first appears. The deceased is the father of a group of foster children who had made quite a reputation for themselves when he was growing up. He knew it was in his best interest to get the case solved ... and fast.
His priorities begin to waver as he is reunited with the only daughter in the family. Her never-wavering calm makes him want to shatter it and expose the passion he knows lies beneath it. No matter how hot blooded their unions are, it was becoming clear that he may have to choose between love and his brotherhood in blue, for their families seemed to always be at increasing odds.
Will he have time to make the decision or will it be made for him?

I'd like to give this more then three stars because I did enjoy it very much but there were some holes and inconsistencies in the story that I just can't look over. For one thing Shawn, one of Fallon's brothers, we're told that he was a pro-football player but isn't any longer because of a blown knee and later he says he was hit to many times and faced brain damage. Which one was it and why is he now living at his dad's house with two of his other brothers sharing a car. We are never told what or why the oldest brother is living back at home. The thing is it was alluded to that the dad was living alone at the house and now everyone is there sharing a car. The other thing is what Fallon did in the millitary, we're told she served ten years with the Marines and now she trains in hand to hand combat, but, she can read a police and autopys report, go to the crime scene and visuaize based on the photos how things were, negotiate with gang members etc, etc., etc. Sure she says she doesn't want to talk about her past but no one even question how she can do this. Like I said I liked the story over all but it had a lot of holes so I give it 3 1/2 stars for its entertainment value.
This was truly one of Aliyah Burke's better novels. It reminded me vaguely of the movie Four Brothers but clearly with a different spin. The combination of mystery, suspense, believable plot line and characters, as well as steamy UNRUSHED romance was perfectly done. I appreciated the fact that Fallon was a very strong and independent woman that didn't cower in the face of danger but was smart enough to allow help from Ian. I also appreciated the fact that though Fallon had a bad childhood and was facing emotional hardships, she didn't crumble and become a complete emotional wreck, which would have discredited her in my opinion. Aliyah allowed for an Alpha Female to surface without the character becoming a complete bitch or going the way of so many other heroines in which the kickass woman somehow turns into a damsel in distress. Also, Ian's character was well written. He was still an Alpha Male but instead of being a complete bully and not allowing Fallon to fulfill her task, he assists and becomes her ally. Ms. Burke wrote a great book - definitely worth it! Great read.
The Detective's Lover ( The Madxoxes Book 1) is a very good suspenseful interracial romance novel that earned a rating of five stars. Fallon Maddox falls in love with the detective who was in charge of her adoptive father's murder. Together they look for her father's killer and the people behind the cover-up. This was a sensual and exciting romance and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading very good romantic thrillers.
In The Detective’s Lover, Aliyah Burke did a fine job of marrying suspense with a great love story. The suspense and whodunits kept me hooked with great pacing, and while the love scenes were hot, they never detracted from the overall tone of the story. I gave this book three stars because I did like the basic story..... Wait for it..... BUT, there was too much sex and the sex went on for PAGES. I found myself skipping past those pages just to get back to the storyline.
The couple spent more time either boning, or thinking about boning, than solving the heroine's adoptive father's murder. 😂 It was crazy. I still thought it was a decent story. It's better to read this on Kindle than to hear it on Audible.
Great story about love and police corruption. I’m always grateful when the heroine is portrayed as a strong, intelligent, and capable woman with her life together. I also appreciate the buildup of love between Fallon and Ian; no insta-love.
I really enjoyed this book. It kept me glued to it. I couldn't out it down. I almost cried 1st the end. (Not giving anything away). But was a great read
This was my first read by this author and I really wanted to give it more than 3 stars.....but as another reviewer stated there was a lot holes in the story. The author seemed as if she wanted to do too many things with the story.......I really like Ian and his attraction to Fallon made you trully beleive in Soul Mates...3 1/2 stars.....
This book is so intense you do feel you are part of the story. The setting really draws you into the storyline. The characters are so believeable, the chemistry between them is so hot. Read it and i promise you will not be disappointed. Interesting, fast paced read. I will read it again for sure! xox
Since this came out before the movie "four brothers", I feel like this author needs to get some royalty checks for the idea. This was a fun read...I love that this author is never afraid to write a kick-ass female character.
It shows that you can be kick-ass and still want romance...
The Detective’s Lover is a compelling read. Aliyah Burke has given us a great balance romance and suspense never losing one to enhance the other.
Ian Cavanaugh is a homicide detective but when a crime occurs and it is those he works closest with that have all the secrets he will need to evaluate who he can trust.
Fallon Maddox is a marine but in her home town she is a foster kid with a last name known to the law for all the wrong reasons.
When a death brings Ian and Fallon together it is more than their determination to find the truth that sparks. But Fallon won’t let her feelings get in the way and as the danger grows so does her fear for a future. Can Ian and Fallon find the murderer before more people are killed and will Fallon let down her guard and take a chance on forever with Ian.
Would have given this five stars, but it was so much like the movie Four Brothers. Love the Maddox family cannot wait for the next book and I have always enjoyed this author.
Ian and Fallon were perfect for each other. They were both independent souls who were instantly attracted to each other and quickly found an explosive and everlasting love. Action and intrigue.
I always love a good mystery/romance combination. While this is a romance the drama of trying to solve the murder of Pop's, Fallon's adopted father keeps the reader engaged in The Who did it aspect of the story. It looks like this story is going to become a series, I hope the author does something different and focuses on Ian and Fallon solving mysteries rather than the other two brothers. Overall a great read.
