Shift of the Dead

Rate this book
A group of retail employees get trapped inside their store when the dead begin to rise. There are no policemen here, no army commandos or sharpshooters, just everyday ordinary people in their 20's and 30's. Love triangles, boredom, and missing loved ones prove to be as dangerous as the horde outside. Despair and lonliness leads to a game of Truth or Dare. Some of the survivors will escape their confines, while others are doomed to wander the planet as the living dead.

Later on, the survivors make camp in a cabin in the woods, where they find that horrors greater than the undead survive in this new world.

Free short story I found on www.amazon.co.uk.

This was an ok read but certainly nothing special or spectacular. The concept (a group of employees waiting out the zombie apocalypse in a retail store) is nothing new or original, and although a few nods are made to the classic zombie movie Dawn of the Dead (dir. George A. Romero, 1978) this story was just not inspired at all.

The writing felt flat and forced, with far too much emphasis on character appearance (I do not care for unnecessary detailed descriptions of characters, including sexual orientation, when the shuffling dead are scratching at the windows). The characters were all insipid and quite frankly, stupid. More than once I was rooting for the zombies to crash through their store defences and rip them apart, if only to make the story seem less dull.

That being said however, this is a short story with two parts, and it seems to me that the second part was written at a later time than the first as it was far superior, both in its construction, foreshadowing and action sequences. The first part was so boring and I very nearly gave up reading the rest of the story, which is quite a rare occurrence for me.

Although I disliked the first part of this story immensely, the second part is much more fun and better written. This story, in my opinion, could do with some major editing; by basically scrapping most of the first part this could be a much better story.

Jason and his colleagues are at work when the undead come a knocking. Thankfully, 'work' is Buy-Lots' - a Wal-mart style store so they are able to hole up for a while. After a time though they have to get out and try and re-unite with survivors and loved ones. And sometimes it isn't just the dead that are undesirables.
A well told tale of the zombie apocalypse by an upcoming young author - if zombies are your thing, give it a try. If not, ah, try it anyway.
