Fern Michaels isn’t a person. I’m not sure she’s an entity either since an entity is something with separate existence. Fern Michaels® is what I DO. Me, Mary Ruth Kuczkir. Growing up in Hastings, Pennsylvania, I was called Ruth. I became Mary when I entered the business world where first names were the order of the day. To this day, family and friends call me Dink, a name my father gave me when I was born because according to him I was ‘a dinky little thing’ weighing in at four and a half pounds. However, I answer to Fern since people are more comfortable with a name they can pronounce.

As they say, the past is prologue. I grew up, got a job, got married, had five kids. When my youngest went off to Kindergarten, my husband told me to get off my ass and get a job. Those were his exact words. I didn’t know how to do anything except be a wife and mother. I was also a voracious reader having cut my teeth on The Bobbsey Twins, Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys, Cherry Ames and the like. The library was a magical place for me. It still is to this day. Rather than face the outside world with no skills, I decided to write a book. For some reason that didn’t intimidate me. As my husband said at the time, stupid is as stupid does. Guess what, I don’t have that husband any more. Guess what else! I wrote 99 books, most of them New York Times Best Sellers.

Moving right along here . . . Several years ago I left Ballantine Books, parted company with my agent, sold my house in New Jersey that I had lived in all my married life and in 1993 moved to South Carolina. I figured if I was going to go through trauma let it be all at one time. It was a breeze. The kids were all on their own at that point. The dump was a 300 year old plantation house that is listed in the National Registry that I remodeled. Today it is beyond belief as are the gardens and the equally old Angel Oaks that drip Spanish moss. Unfortunately, I could not get my ghost to relocate. This ghost has been documented by previous owners. Mary Margaret as we call her, is “a friendly”. She is also mischievous. It took me two weeks to figure out that she didn’t like my coffee cups. They would slide off the table or counter or else they’d break in the dishwasher. I bought red checkered ones. All are intact as of this writing. She moves pillows from one room to the other and she stops all the clocks in the house at 9:10 in the a.m. at least once a week. When the Azaleas are in bloom, and only then, I find blooms on my night stand. I have this glorious front porch and during the warm months I see my swing moving early in the morning when the air is still and again late in the day. She doesn’t spook the dogs. I always know when she’s around because the five of them line up and look like they’re at a tennis match. As of this writing we’re co-habiting nicely.

Most writers love what they do and I’m no exception. I love it when I get a germ of an idea and get it down on paper. I love breathing life into my characters. I love writing about women who persevere and prevail because that’s what I had to do to get to this point in time. It’s another way of saying it doesn’t matter where you’ve been, what matters is where you’re going and how you get there. The day I finally prevailed was the day I was inducted into the New Jersey Literary Hall of Fame. For me it was an awesome day and there are no words to describe it.
I’ve been telling stories and scribbling for 37 years. I hope I can continue for another 37 years. It wasn’t easy during some of those years. As I said, I had to persevere. My old Polish grandmother said something to me when I was little that I never forgot. She said when God is good to you, you have to give back. For a while I didn’t know how to do that. When I finally figured it out I set up The Fern Michaels® Foundation.

This is the worst book I have ever read. I find it hard to believe Fern Michaels is a #1 New York Times Bestselling Author. I won't even critisize the content, because I realize there are some books that have content that does not interest me. However, this book could have been written by a semi-talented 8th grader. It was ridiculous. You can bet I won't be reading anymore books by this author.

I'd never read anything by Fern Michaels but she is a best selling author so I thought I'd give it a shot. The premise was very interesting and timely with the recent outcome of the Casey Anthony trial and the release of the West Memphis Three. Basically, it's about a man who is accused of molesting a child. The reader knows he is innocent, but the jury doesn't agree, and he goes to jail, leaving his doting wife behind to deal with the aftermath. It's a story with definite potential. Alas, the characters are a little hard to believe and the dialogue--ouch! So stilted in places it left me in pain. There were also lots of repetitive things that made me feel this was like a 2nd draft of the book or that the editor had been snoozing on the job.

True, I could see that Ms. Michaels has talent and I glimpsed it enough that I kept reading, but I'm not sure that I will be reading any of her other work. If you are a fan, then you'll probably love it, but if you are a drive by reader, maybe try one of her other novels first.

I'm not familiar with the author's previous books, but Betrayal sounded like it might be one I'd like. I was wrong.

The book was endurable, at best, up until the trial. At that point it didn't just begin going downhill, it plunged. Awful. Just awful.

The story could have been much more engaging if it was written better. Poor dialogue. It was killing me.

When I think of perfect summer reads--you know, the ones you stay up late reading while you're on vacation--Fern Michaels' Betrayal comes to mind. I couldn't put it down.
It wasn't that it was a seminal literary work; indeed, the characters are not immensely complex. Michaels conveys exactly which characters you're supposed to root for (Kate Rocket, seemingly perfect in every way, Emily Winter, whose only flaw is having been part of the Winter family) and the ones you're supposed to despise (Debbie and Sara Winter, a mother-daughter team who are hosts to a plethora of dysfunctions). Betrayal starts out by dancing around the label of a suspense book, but it's more of a drama between families with a little romance thrown in for good measure. As a criminal defense attorney, I found many of the legal proceedings to be straining in their credulity, but I can't help but enjoy a book where the courtroom drama ends in favor of the underdog. Also, the Roy Black namedrop was a welcome touch.
Not the most gripping or powerful book, but a solid, enjoyable, page-turner from a legendary creator of many a page-turner. Many thanks to Kensington Books for providing me with this copy for review.

The writing leaves something to be desired. It feels like the story was written down, but not given a great comb through to make sure it sounds right. The conversations feel SO unnatural. Almost all of the characters sound very similar in their dialogue. The narration feels trying and repetitive. It restates things in a manner that tends to give away what is going to happen. Kate going on and on about how Alex is perfect... well, of course then she is going to lose him. This book is also very fat/body shamey. It's not just the characters' thoughts, but even the narration that harshly fat-shames Sara. And Kate wanting to "leave the bikini-wearing to the younger crowd" when she's only in her late thirties... come ooooon.
The only place I can give credit was that the plot was pretty decent. I was invested enough in the story itself to keep reading, which is certainly something. Even that being said, some parts of the story are unbelievable.
Fern Michaels was an NY best-selling author, so I'm wondering if maybe I just chose a dud among her usual work.

This book was just ok for me. It was the story of a perfect marriage between Kate and Alex. Although they do not have children of their own, they love the visits of Sara and Emily. The two girls are the daughters of Alex's best friend, Don and his wife Debbie.
However, Sara suddenly exhibits troubling behavior on her last visit. Weeks later, Alex gets a phone call from Don saying that Sara has accused him of molesting her for years. Kate, always believing Alex's innocence, is helpless as her husband goes to trial, is convicted and sent to prison. When even more tragedy occurs, Kate's grief turns to anger and eventually revenge. She embarks on a quest to ruin those involved and clear her husband's name.
I thought this story was a bit "over the top." Debbie walks around calling her daughters tramps, Sara is having one temper tantrum after another and Don, just ignores it all...It did not make sense to me that Emily and Sara were such beloved guests for Alex and Kate and then on the last visit, Sara is just plain evil and no one says anything to her parents? Why would Kate put up with Debbie's constant rude remarks and foul treatment of them? Does not make sense that she would take their children in on visits when the mom is so vulgar to Kate....oh well, it was fun to read. The characters were nasty, bent on revenge and it was certainly easy to hate Sara and Debbie.
I received this book through the Goodreads First Reads program.

My interest was grabbed here. Sisters. You want to know how this sexual abuse situation was solved. Two friends married. One with kids the other couple without but doting on each other.

I wasn't very impressed with the novel.
The characters were somewhat shallow and the plot was unrealistic at times. There are too many unanswered questions. When Kate does her revenge take -- after all her husband was accused of sexual abuse of a child (Sara) put in jail and murdered there and he is INNOCENT. Kate goes to a real estate office, where Sara's mother works as part of the revenge in a disquise. I couldn't figure out why Debbie didn't recognize Kate at the real estate office. They knew each other for many years.
Sara's character was not realistic at all. I felt absolutely no sympathy for her and I just didn't understand why she behaved the way she did. She was a spoilt brat for what reason? Her parents neglected her but she seems to have some kind of problem that the author could have explored.

I hadn't heard of this author and don't regret trying her book but it is highly unlikely that I would read another book by her unless she rewrites Betrayal.

Fern Michaels is an author I’ve always respected. I enjoy her books and believe that every story that she has given us has been a gift. Her stories are touching and thoughtful. I was very excited to have a chance to read this book.
However, I had problems connecting with the characters. Their lack of empathy and judgmental attitudes made them hard to sympathize with. The characters spend a lot of time insulting each other and even the “good” people in the story seemed malicious. I felt the storyline was missing critical information, such as character development. The timeline seemed to jump forward and leave out too much of the story. I was very surprised that this was written by Fern Michaels.
Please don’t let this be a deterrent to reading Fern Michaels other books. She’s a great author and deserves her reputation.

Unsatisfying story. The characters were like cartoon characters. Very unreal and written like a jr. high person would write them. The Alex bit was unsettling, not the trial part, but what happend. Not sure what the point of that was.It is not romantic to lose a loved one even if you find a new love of your life. I thought that there should be more legal punishment for the other family - false arrest, defamation of character and so on.Way too much yak about making coffee, house decor, purchases at WalMart, and products in the bath room. Let's have more real story.

At first when I started reading this I was tempted not to finish it. It is a bit of a slow starter but I'm glad that I persevered because I was pleasantly surprised. It was a really good book to read. This is the first time that I have read anything by this author and I'm looking forward to reading more of her books.

20% story, the rest filler. Like trying to fill a big box with a little gift and packing a lot of paper so it won't rattle.

I really liked this book. It had twists and turns nobody would see coming. I read the entire book in two days as I just could not put it down. The characters all were intriguing. I could picture them very clearly with the author's description. I would definitely recommend this to others.

Great Story ....

I've only recently discovered Fern Michaels, but I've already devoured about ten of her books. Her stories alwAys manage to pull me in and I become immersed in the world's she creates.

In Betrayal, Kate & Alex Rockett are the ideal couple. They have a true to life storybook love, yet there's one thing that stands between their happily ever After, the inability to have children.

Don is Alex's best friend from school, they've managed to be able to weather growing old and two states apart and maintAin a friendship. Don and his wife have two daughters who look to Alex and Kate as their second parents.

Sara and Emily love visiting Alex.& Kate, so when their parents take them to North Carolina for a two week visit, it's nothing out of the ordinary for the girls.

Kate is shocked by some of the disturbing things Emily is telling her about Sara's behavior, but not long into the visit, Kate sees for herself that the sweet little Sara she's grown to love isn't so sweet anymore. After a particular unsettling and disturbing incident, that left Kate's workshop and her work in shambles, Kate knows she has to confront Don and tell him her concerns about Sara.

Unfortunately, Kate never got that chance. A couple of weeks after the girls go back home, Alex receives a phone call that will change the course of their lives as they know it.

A disturbing accusation and an unforeseeable event changes the course of both Alex and Kate's lives.

Five years later and Kate still can't move on, she's got her mind on one thing. Revenge.

The plot was intriguing and I was spellbound by the story and the writing. However, the last chapter (NOT the epilogue) just left a lot to be desired. It just wasn't complete, I didn't feel. It felt rushed and like the author was in a hurry to get finished. It just didn't make much sense to me. There seemed to be conversations we weren't privy to.

Yet, I still would recommend this book. I just visualize it the way I feel it should have been written.

betrayal by fern michaels
Kate and her husband Alex always take his best friends kids while they are on a week long cruise. What happens next is one of the girls accuses him of
sexual misbehavior. Alex is brought to trial and is found guilty. How could this have happened-the kids loved visiting with them as they paid attention
to the girls more than the parents.
He is put in jail for years til another lawyer finds the lawyer was incompetent. He is to be set free on Monday and will be able to go home with her.
What happens next doens't make any sense but definitely changes her whole life.
She went undercover, just disappeared from the face of the world. She started tracking the girls and to figure out why it had all happened. She was like
a private eye as she did her investigations. She changed her hair color, style, clothes, everything.

The lawyer needs to locate her to give her an envelope that Alex had entrusted in him to give her if anything should happen to him. He's yet to locate her
and calls the ones who had brought charges up on Kate. The Winters: the girls are messed up, the father now drinks himself into oblivion cuz his best friend
is dead and he never believed his daughters accusations, he is broke. Mrs. Winters owns the real estate agency and Kate is attempting to buy a new house with
their agency. There is a lot of gossip in the office about them, the money they want from the civil suit, which they will never get.

Revenge is sweet as Kate watches what happens to Debbie. The Winters wil be feeling total downfall within a weeks time.
Kate calls her best friend who's continuing on with the breeding of Alex's dogs and they laugh about the downfall.
She confides in the lawyer and he's agreeable to help her after she gets the envelope.
She is able to confront the girl and her sister, her dad, her mother and her lawyer. She tells them what future the girl will have now and
there is not a thing anybody can do to stop it.

Betrayal is by Fern Michaels. It is probably one of her best novels that I have read to date. From the first page I was drawn into the lives of Alex and Kate Rocket. It is almost like being in the same room with them and enduring the same highs and lows that they are hit with. Fern Michaels’ choice of words brought forth all of the emotions they go through and all of the love they feel for each other. Little do you expect the twists and turns their lives will take. It is so good that I had to sit and read it in one sitting. All range of emotions from extreme happiness to devastating sorry ran through me. I would suggest a box of Kleenex next to anyone to reads this book. Thank you, Fern Michaels for such a marvelous book.

Cardboard characters of good and evil. Felt like the author sat down with a dictionary of synonyms pulling out all those for good and evil to illumine the divide. Much too overwrought, and inaccurate, description of false allegations of child sexual abuse and of trial on such charges. I think most people would agree that a defense attorney is incompetent when they put on no opening or closing statements, no cross-examination and when there is utter failure to put on available relevant witnesses. & that's before you toss in that they are related to the victim. Sheesh. What a pot-boiler. Dull and uninteresting.

I wonder why I didn't write this when I finished this book. Maybe because it was hard reading it? I have been archiving my nook books and found it.

Page 171 . . . She should've reeled Alex in when she had the chance. He was a much better catch. Even now, she would take him over don. She knew he wasn't the sick, perverted bastard Sara made him out to be.
How well she knew. . . .

Page 194 . . . hate . . . He'd offered to take care of me and the child, but he never mentioned marriage. . . .
. . . That bitch and his evil spawn had lied about his best friend. . . .

Not as bad as I expected, but I don't think this style of writing is to my taste. High school writing level, improbable plot with holes you could drive a truck through and the most unrealistic 'happy ever after' ending.

Kate and Alex Rocket have everything they want except children. Alex's best friend has two daughters who the Rockets are close too, and think of as family. As the story develops it becomes clear the younger of the two sisters has some pretty serious issues. After the girls most recent visit with the Rocket's Alex receives a phone call that shatters Alex and Kate's lives. Sara makes a terrible accusation against Alex. Kate is determined to uncover the truth and restore her husband's good name. This becomes her life mission, but along the way more sorrow awaits. The second attorney Kate hires believes in Alex and Kate and is particularly taken by Kate. Sometimes after the clouds clear, happiness awaits, if only we can open ourselves to the possibility. As in all romance stories, this one has a happy ending.

Really enjoyed this book. I do wish that Kate had exacted more revenge.

Kate and Alex, a loving couple.
Their best friends have 2 kids Emily and Sara who, Kate and Alex look after regularly when their parents go on cruises.
Emily is a sweet and caring child.
Sara is a handful - violent tendencies, lies and is demanding.
Sara accuses Alex of sexual molestation and there is a long drawn out court case, Alex ends up in jail for a sentence of 120 years. Kate fights the sentence and tries to clear her husband’s name.

Kate gets some great news from her solicitor, but then she gets some tragic news.

Kate plans vengeance over the course of many years.

Can Kate clear Alex’s name, and can she live the rest of her life in happiness with some one she loves?

Started and stopped the book rather quickly, before beginning again to give it another chance. Those triggered by reading about child molestation should avoid. I admit I prefer happy, mood elevating reading over dark or depressing themes, but there were other issues with the book, as well. Dialog and descriptions were choppy and awkward at times. Even though the book did pull out a decent ending, where was the justice served for the atrocities committed? Pretty sure filing a fake police report is a crime in every state, including Florida. It had interesting twists and turns, if you could get through the beginning, so I’ll give it a 2, but not one I would recommend unless desperate.

I wasn’t a fan of Fern Michael’s writing style, but couldn’t put my finger on why. After reading a few of the reviews it dawned on me. The characters were not believable. Creating more depth would help change that. For example, why did Debbie have her daughter, Sara, make the accusation? I know greed played into it but what else? Maybe that’s how the writer intended it but that would not have been the way I’d go about addressing it. There were several pieces of the story that were glossed over which also contributed to my so-so rating. I may read another book by this author to see if this was a 1-time deal.

A very riveting book from author Fern Michaels, Betrayal is about the friends you pick and when loyalties go too far and secrets are kept too long. alex and Don had known each other since elementary school. later, they both fell for the same woman. She loved Alex but he didn't love her so she settled for Don instead after a brief fling with Alex. All the other choices and events of cause and effect that take place in this book stem from that one choice. A very good read from a very good author. Highly recommend

I read some harsh reviews about this book, and I can see why they didn’t like it. But I found it entertaining, despite the fact that I wanted to kill that no neck monster and her slutty mother. And even though it wasn’t supposed to be humorous, I couldn’t help it ... that no neck monster was always begging for food. I think it was the laugh out loudly moments that kept me reading. But then it takes very harsh and dark moments, only by then I was too invested. The ending was too happy, and a little too perfect ... so that’s why I gave it 3 stars.
