I came across this title when it was referenced in a British photography magazine interview with a noted photographer as the best book he had encountered on the subject. Checked it out and pleased to find it a cheap kindle download. The book is a conversation between two noted and talented photographers and talks mainly about being in the head of a polished professional. How does one execute the brief of an assignment, how does one know where to point the lens and when to click the shutter A bit of a trip down memory lane into the days of darkrooms and negatives and printing out contact sheets to select the worthies for enlargement. Topics include organization of photos and some derogatory comments on the "artistic, academic" side of the business as well as the passion of the process. Definitely for serious snappers, nothing on the technical side since it is assumed you are past that point. Sort of like meeting a like minded friend in the local pub and sharing views on some common topics. Short but sweet.

Magnum reportage photographer David Hurn and author Bill Jay converse about core principles of photography. This is not a tech-oriented book about how to photograph; it's about determining 'why,' and then turning to the practicalities related to completing a project. Hurn provides thoughtful and interesting advice regardless of the type of photography one practices. Note: my version of the book is pre-2000 and 'future of photography' is quite dated. Nevertheless, recommended for those who like to think beyond gear.

Have you ever wanted to pick a great photographer's mind about what it actually means to be a photographer? This book is an absolute gold mine. Beyond the (very valuable) philosophical discourse, it is also full of very practical, actionable advice on how to handle photographic work, from organizing projects to archival of images. Having finished the book, I'm going to read it again immediately, taking copious notes this time. A book to return to.

Amazing!!! EVERY photographer should read this! It will help refresh your mind to go back to the basics and to keep things as simple as possible. I loved the views and quotes. The book is great because you get the honest opinion of a wonderful photographer.

I was never able to really get into this book. It is written like a biography which seemed to put me off though I do not know why.
